xp if there was any investigation at all then trump is guilty of abstruction of justice--the cover-up is always easier to spot than the crime

meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 10 May 2017 13:19 (seven years ago) link

that the optics/timing is bad might prove irrelevant. trump has played against traditional norms for his entire campaign/presidency and hasn't been too hampered by that strategy. his base loves it when he does the exact wrong thing, and the republicans fall in line, and the dems are ineffectual

I'm curious, what is his base saying about this?

Unsurprisingly, a lot of them are saying exactly this. I'll leave it to others to suss out the overlap:

Yam finally did something you guys wanted Obama to do last fall, why the long faces?

Surely with it having come out that there were problems with the clearance with Flynn to the extent that they have, anybody who is forwarded for the FBI head position will have all eyes on procedures being followed as to their being vetted properly. Subsequently the idea that Trump could just position one of his guys there would be a no go.
Or are things already that twisted that that could be bypassed.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 13:32 (seven years ago) link

i don't think it will be too hard to get someone is who can pass vetting etc and be a 100% total shameless hack.

About damn time, drain the swamp, #winning, that's leadership, now he just needs to fire another thousand career bureaucraps, etc.

Also: haha about the stupid hipocrit libs - weren't they calling for Comey's head last year, now they're defending him. GAWD libtards're so stupid and hipocryticall

Whenever Trump chooses a toady he manages to find someone like Devin Nunes and Sean Spicer, complete morons. Every half-competent ally is eventually pushed out, either because they refuse to do something impossible, or because they get too much attention. In a way, the really interesting thing here is how badly Jeff Sessions misjudged the situation. Perhaps he will be the next to go?

Other things the base are saying are what was upthread - now the next head of the FBI will have the balls to properly investigate Clinton, also investigate the BernieBros-vs-DNC case, also Pizzagate is Real.

Who even cares anymore? If they don't secure a special prosecutor (as appears increasingly likely), the entire affair will be complete theater (even moreso than it was ever gonna be). No one on the GOP side is going to hitch up their big boy britches and look out for anyone but #1, so everyone in the country should probably just go ahead and strap in for a perpetual powerfuck.

yea if there's one group of Republicans even more deplorable than the die-hard Trump shills its those who give the media plenty of "this raises a lot of concerns!!" quotes but rubber stamp everything he does anyway

i don't have much contact with anyone who would offer a full-throated defense of trump. my parents avoid the topic. my mom's gotten a profanity-laced diatribe or two.

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Wednesday, 10 May 2017 14:45 (seven years ago) link

I kinda feel like Mitch McConnell would be hilarious if he were happening to somebody else, and I know that makes me a bad person

“This is what we have now, Mr. President, our Democratic colleagues complaining about the removal of an FBI director whom they themselves repeatedly and sharply criticized,” he said. “That removal being done by a man, Rod Rosenstein, who they repeatedly and effusively praised.”

xp I sort of count the not overt crowd at this point as well. I mean, how do you not get irked by all of this? Probably a dead topic by now but it feels urgent all over again every time shit gets dumber or more rancid. Which is every three days it seems.

Just go to foxnews.com and read the headlines. That's the story they're getting and that's why it's not a red line for them.

i've also made some snide remarks to my parents (who have no savings and subsist completely on SS & mom's laughably meager pension) and recently divorced & unemployed sister about how i hope nobody expects a handout when the social safety net is completely dismantled.

they seem confused, as if that's not what the GOP actually intends to do.

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Wednesday, 10 May 2017 14:51 (seven years ago) link

This whole "democrats were just criticizing him" smug shit is so fucking stupid.

It's like saying "a few days ago you went on and on about how your car is almost out of gas but now today you're saying it has a full tank?? Make up your mind!"

Evan, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 14:52 (seven years ago) link

That McConnell quote is a perfect example of the sort of toxic shit even the not overt Trumpists subscribe to. It's the worst kind of argument but people are somehow not embarrassed to use it all the time.
