Cryin' Chuck Schumer stated recently, "I do not have confidence in him (James Comey) any longer." Then acts so indignant. #draintheswamp

so the "while i greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that i am not under investigation" part is trump's way of passive-aggressively (and very publicly, like a fucking moron) retaliating against comey once he learned that the fbi is investigating trump directly, i guess?

If you ask the FBI director if he's investigating you 3 times he has to tell the truth.

He had grown enraged by the Russia investigation, two advisers said, frustrated by his inability to control the mushrooming narrative around Russia. He repeatedly asked aides why the Russia investigation wouldn’t disappear and demanded they speak out for him. He would sometimes scream at television clips about the probe, one adviser said.

Like any of that is a surprise.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 04:24 (seven years ago) link

This to me is the more telling/true bit:

By Tuesday evening, the president was watching the coverage of his decision and frustrated no one was on TV defending him, a White House official said. He wanted surrogates out there beating the drum.

Instead, advisers were attacking each other for not realizing the gravity of the situation as events blew up. "How are you not defending your position for three solid hours on TV?" the White House aide said.

Two White House officials said there was little communications strategy in handling the firing, and that staffers were given talking points late Tuesday for hastily arranged media appearances. Aides soon circulated previous quotes from Schumer hitting Comey. After Schumer called for a special prosecutor, the White House huddled in press secretary Sean Spicer's office to devise a strategy and sent "fresh faces" to TV, one White House official said.

Personally, I have this fantasy where McMaster begins to really meditate on the title of his book and how it could apply to him in the context of history and the level of access he currently enjoys and the state of our government and the proximity between the White House Drain-O and the president's Tab supply.

good [unintelligible]!

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 10 May 2017 13:02 (seven years ago) link

i'm still of the mind that the russia stuff is largely a nothingburger. i think at most an investigation would reveal that trump was a useful idiot -- i'm not convinced he really had any personal involvement/knowledge of possible collusion

and i kinda think firing comey is just his way of making sure that the director of the FBI is one of his guys. like, the very fact that there ~could~ be an investigation of him---the president!---was threatening, so they found an excuse to ditch him. the substance of the investigation wasn't the issue, it was its very existence

that the optics/timing is bad might prove irrelevant. trump has played against traditional norms for his entire campaign/presidency and hasn't been too hampered by that strategy. his base loves it when he does the exact wrong thing, and the republicans fall in line, and the dems are ineffectual
