Just when we'd all mostly descended into a horrified level of tedium, things get demonstrably interesting again, in that fresh "who the fuck even knows what's next" way.

Sessions is probably the most powerful person in the Cabinet right now, because he actually has some real world political experience and some knowledge of how the federal government works.

otfm, he's the most dangerous ogre they've got

Not a chance of an independent counsel or any real investigation unless Dems manage to retake the house in 2018.

Why not both? Make it into a Reality Show and it'll get the best ratings!

Best confirmation hearings ever if he does.

I can see the Senate's Gruesome Twosome asking for one.

I shouldn't say "independent counsel" -- "special prosecutor," I shoudl have written.

This is the interesting bit:

"The Director was wrong to usurp the Attorney General's authority on July 5, 2016" and to hold presser, Rosenstein says

— Jennifer Epstein (@jeneps) May 9, 2017

The full train of tweets:

Rosenstein: ""I cannot defend the Director's handling of the conclusion of the investigation of Secretary Clinton's emails"....Rosenstein on Comey: "I do not understand his refusal to accept the nearly universal judgment that he was mistaken."...."The Director was wrong to usurp the Attorney General's authority on July 5, 2016" and to hold presser, Rosenstein says

Given that this is coming from Rosenstein, a career employee at the DOJ since 1990, then as Josh Barro put it:

Amazing. They're firing him for being unfair to Hillary. https://t.co/knWRecSLrZ

This is basically the Government version of Trump not paying contractors for doing work on his hotels.

Confirmation hearings are gonna be a nightmare for McConnell et al but this would seem to throw the FBI investigation and Senate investigations into total chaos, which is to GOPs advantage. More delays delays delays (long enough for them to get their tax cut). I don't see why McConnell would agree to the special prosecutor route, no matter how much pundit chatshow cage-rattling Huckleberry Butchmeup and the Maverick do.

Trump probably thinks this is a master-stroke - magnanimously repudiating the asshole who put him in office, while also (entirely coincidentally!) beheading the one agency that is investigating him for criminal malfeasance.

well forget Lindsey:

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued a statement Tuesday responding to President Trump’s decision to fire FBI Director James Comey.
ADVERTISING

“I know this was a difficult decision for all concerned. I appreciate Director Comey’s service to our nation in a variety of roles,” Graham said. “Given the recent controversies surrounding the director, I believe a fresh start will serve the FBI and the nation well. I encourage the President to select the most qualified professional available who will serve our nation’s interests.”

it is a v reality tv move - stretch out your odds of survival by sowing chaos and confusion among the competition. It looks transparently self-serving to me, but I can't argue w its short-term effectiveness.
