i am also sitting on the campus of a liberal arts college in new england (maybe the same one????) and idk -- if remade in the image of this particular institution (Fartmouth) the world would look....exactly like the community in which it resides

Different school/state but... 85% blue then?

Btw, my reference to New England LAC students was meant as a joke about the risks of generalizing on the basis of people in your immediate surroundings.

Big win in the House - very exciting! But when everything comes together with the inclusion of Phase 2, we will have truly great healthcare!

I thought prescription inherently relied on a pre written script from the doctor validating your right to the drugs you needed. Otherwise it would just be commercial sale.
& further to that it indicates a further network of understanding where the sales point was prohibited from selling those medicines and devices without validation from a figure of authority like a medical proffessional. Also that that network ensured to some extent the quality of treatment and medicines allowed to be distributed.

did obama talk up universal healthcare this much the day and day after the ACA passed the House in 2009, the way comrade combover keeps extolling australia's system?

iirc obama recently said he'd have gone after universal health care if he'd known the repubs were going to be strictly obstructionist anyway (which...did they indicate otherwise at any point?)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 5 May 2017 20:18 (seven years ago) link

I guess it literally happened -

Mr. Page’s relationship with Mr. Trump appears to have been fleeting. According to former Trump campaign officials, the two men have never met, though Mr. Page has said he attended some meetings where Mr. Trump was present.

But last spring, when Republican foreign policy experts were distancing themselves from Mr. Trump, Mr. Page served a purpose for the flailing Trump campaign. Dismissing the notion that his campaign was bereft of foreign policy expertise, the candidate read aloud a list of five people who had offered to advise him on world affairs — including “Carter Page, Ph.D.”

idk when the ACA process started in the Senate there were like 41 GOP senators, at least 3 of whom were known as moderates, plus the party had been pummeled two election cycles in a row. It only seems dumb in retrospect that Obama thought he could get a republican few votes. One of the GOP moderates switched parties in the middle ffs.

fwiw it's like that in huge swaths of the rest of the world. i bought some from basically the equivalent of a popsicle stand in india, they had long strips of tablets in foil/blister packaging, you'd say about how much you wanted and they'd scissor off the requested dosage. i recognize the enormous potential downsides of this system, of course.

point I didn't fully make earlier was that the prescription thing meant there was control over drug/medicine supply. That could also have some drawbacks in terms of what factors effect what gets supplied and what doesn't and how it is decided but at least there is some level of control of standards etc.
Also occurred to me that it tied in with the idea of proffessionalization as to who got to have authority over who did and didn't get to say who got supply. It's part of the ethos of being a doctor that you are in a position to allow people to take the drugs you have some control over. & if everybody could just walk into a shop so9mewhere and have everything available to them without that permission the system would have to change. probably for the worse to some degree.
Also occurred to me taht consequences of this government seemed to be that that system was being undermined to some degree.
Liker the forces of commerce prioritised over the idea of the hippocratic oath etc

A letter of complaint against Fusion GPS was filed with the Justice Department, alleging the company -- and founder former Wall Street Journal reporter Glenn Simpson -- violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

Asked for comment on the complaint’s allegation that Fusion GPS acted as an unregistered agent for Russian interests, attorney Joshua A. Levy told Fox News’ senior executive producer Pamela Browne via email that, “Fusion GPS has complied with the law and was not required to register under FARA. Nor has Fusion GPS ever been a Russian agent. Allegations to the contrary are not true.”

Levy went on to deny Fusion GPS lobbied against the Magnitsky Act. “Not true,” Levy stated.

fox article is attacking the dossiers validity accusing it of being potentially funded by russians themselves. 'comey included this baseless hit piece funded by the russians therefore the russia probe is bullshit'

I used to buy gout medicine from India for my grandfather (with the permission of his doctor) - colchicine used to cost pennies, then it got re-patented under the scheme where pre-FDA medicines could be researched or whatever, and it became several dollars per pill overnight when the generic stocks ran out.
