Let me tell you about a girl I know
had a drink about an hour ago.
Sitting in a corner by herself in a bar in downtown Hell.
She heard a noise and she looked through the door.
And saw a man she'd never seen before.
Light skin light blue eyes a double chin and a plastic smile.
Well her eyebrow raised as he walked through the door
And took an empty seat next to her at the bar.
"My brand new car is parked right outside. How'd ya like to go for a ride?"
And she said."Wait a minute I have to think."
He said, "That's fine. May I please buy you a drink"
One drink turned into 3 or 4 and they left and got into his car
and they drove away someplace real far.

Now babe the time has come.
How'd ya like to have a little fun?
And she said." If we could only please be on our way, I will not run."

That's when things got out of control.
She didn't want to, he had his way.
She said, "Let's Go"
He said, "No Way!"
Come on babe it's your lucky day.
Shut your mouth, were gonna do it my way.
Come on baby don't be afraid,
if it wasn't for date rape I'd never get laid.

He finished up and he started the car
He turned around and drove back to the bar.
He said."Now baby don't be sad, in my opinion you weren't half-bad."
She picked up a rock.,threw it at the car, hit him in the head, now his got a big scar.
Come on party people won't you listen to me.
Date Rape Stylie.

The next day she went to her drawer, looked up her local attorney at law,
went to the phone and filed the police report and then she took the guy's ass to court.
Well, the day he stood in front of the judge he screamed, " She lies that little slut!"
The judge knew that he was full of shit and he gave him 25 years
And now his heart is filled with tears.

That night in jail it was getting late.
He was butt-raped by a large inmate, and he screamed.
But the guards paid no attention to his cries.

That's when things got out of control.
The moral of the date rape story, it does not pay to be drunk and horny.
But that's the way it had to be.
They locked him up and threw away the key.
Well, I can't take pity on men of his kind,
even though he now takes it in the behind.

That's the way it had to be.
They locked him up and threw away the key.
Well, I can't take pity on men of his kind,
even though he now takes it in the behind.

Early in the morning risin' to the street
Light me up that cigarette and I strap shoes on my feet
Got to find a reason a reason things went wrong
Got to find a reason why my money's all gone
But I got a dalmatian and I can still get high
I can play the guitar like a mother fuckin riot
Life is too short so love the one you got cause you might get
runover or you might get shot
Never start no static
I just get it off my chest
Never had to battle with no bulletproof vest
Take a small example
A tip from me take all of your money and give it up to charity
Lovin's what I got
It's within my reach
And the sublime style's still straight from long beach
It all comes back to you you're gonna get what you deserve
Try and test that you're bound to get served
Love's what I got
Don't start a riot
You feel it when the dance gets hot
That's why I don't cry when my dog runs away
I don't get angry at the bills I have to pay
I don't get angry when my Mom smokes pot, hits
the bottle and goes back to the rock
Fuckin and fighting it's all the same
Livin' with Louie dog's the only way to stay sane
Let the lovin come back to me

Annie's 12 years old
In two more she'll be a whore
Nobody ever told her
It's the wrong way
Don't be afraid
With the quickness you'll get laid
For your family get paid
It's the wrong way

I gave her all that I had to give
But I'm gonna make it hard to live
Salty tears runnin' down her chin
And it ruins up her makeup
They never wanted
A cigarette
Pressed between her lips
But I'm starin' at her tits
It's the wrong way
Strong if I can
But I am only a man
So I take her to the can
It's the wrong way

The only family that she's ever had
Is her seven horny brothers and a drunk-ass dad
He needed money so he put her on the street
Everything was goin' fine till the day she met me
Happy are you sad, wanna shoot your dad
I'll do anything I can, the wrong way
We talk all night
Try to make it right
Believe me shit was tight
I was the wrong way

Don't run away if you wanna stay
Cuz I ain't here to make ya
Oh no
It's up to you what you really wanna do
Spend some time in America
Dub style!

She'll give you all that she's got to give
But I'm gonna make it hard to live
Big salty tears rollin' down her chin
And it smears up her makeup they never wanted

So we ran away and I'm sorry when I say
That straight to this very day
Was the wrong way
She took a hike
Don't matter if I like it or not
Because she only wants the wrong way
I gave her all that I had to give
She still wouldn't take it- oh no!
Her big brown eyes are leakin' salty tears
And it still ruins her makeup
They never wanted

They were seriously my favorite band at some point in high school. And they're still huge here in Cali. I think this goes along with the controversial "Hanging out w/ people who don't know anything about anything and are into lame shit" thread, like how so many people whose tastes haven't budged since HS. Like there are seriously so many people in NorCal who listen EXCLUSIVELY to this weird prescribed list of music that includes radio rap, Bay area rap (Mac Dre, Andre Nickatina, hyphy shit) and a couple of acceptable bro-rock bands, of which RHCP and Sublime are the cornerstones. See also the enduring popularity of Pepper and Slightly Stoopid.
I read recently on a blog someone describing a trip to his suburban hometown as a place "where tight pants are still weird and Sublime never got old," which is so OTM it hurts, even in Sacramento, which in terms of population is a pretty major urban center.

yup, and as you said i'm glad to have moved on (and away from certain people who still listen to em) but fuck it if i ever live to see the day where there isn't any real estate left in my heart for sublime. and to the people knocking the lyrics; okay, fair, shit is lame BUT they were 90s california stoners and they don't sound an eighth as ridiculous as they look. i'd even go so far as to say that the lyrics to santeria, which i voted for btw, are good in the context of the song and with the delivery. i know i'm defending the indefensible to alot of you, but you're giving sublime way too much of a hard time.

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 03:41 (fourteen years ago) link

I was actually a bit more ambivalent to them two weeks ago, and while there are many far worse things than Santaria or What I Got, it's thanks to that thread about their sub-idiotic song about the LA Riots that I not only can't stand them, but really dislike them. Thinking of all the people I've known who have liked Sublime makes it worse, too.

Edward Saroyan, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 03:53 (fourteen years ago) link

which thread? (sorry i have not been paying attn. to sublime-related material.)

anyway, american ILM has a massive and mostly well-considered hang-up with bro-culture (see also dave matthews). in the case of sublime i think it sort of unnecessarily trashes a pretty entertaining punky pop band. but i guess it's a small price to pay for holding the line against the cargo-shorted hordes.

guys i kinda hate most of sublime's catalog and i've been known to slowly back away from people at parties who talk about their love for sublime, but do i really have to point out that santeria uses a trope known as the narrator and date rape does not actually advocate date rape?

like, you guys know this and are calling the lyrics indefensible on aesthetic grounds or something, right?

all that said: would vote for "april 29, 1992 (miami)" which for some reason is missing here but in its absence will vote for the bland "what i got"

Sublime's best original song is probably "Ebin." The song "40 oz To Freedom" isn't bad either. "Saw Red" with Gwen Stefani was okay.

I like a few of their covers a lot, including "Hope," "We're Only Gonna Die From Our Own Arrogance," "Scarlet Begonias," and "Rivers Of Babylon." I'd rather not vouch for any of their other songs, but these covers are probably their best stuff.

I never understood what the hype was all about with their self-titled.. it's mostly boring to me. The first album is really their only good record IMO.

And I don't think it's incredibly strange to call out songs that incoherently race bait and have a guy telling a woman who just had an abortion "after I scold U, maybe I can mold u to share your truths with me. To tell U the truth, you made a mistake."
