Hard Times went from 'ok' to 'great' after a day and I love this immediately

after staring lovingly at Taylor's mugging iirc

New one is good too. I haven't been a fan in the past but I definitely saw some of the appeal of the last album.

I'm really enjoying the new song, but this part is nagging me a little.

Uh, that isn't showing up for me. So what I was trying to point out was the similarity between the moments at about 2:40 in Told You So and 3:03 in Hard Times.

how's life, Thursday, 4 May 2017 13:41 (six years ago) link

tbh i like that the songs seem to talk to each other

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 4 May 2017 13:42 (six years ago) link

That's a good way to look at it.

how's life, Thursday, 4 May 2017 13:43 (six years ago) link

*relistens to "told you so"* ugh this is magnificent

lol

Love "Told You So". This looks suddenly (and, to me anyway, unexpectedly) an album of the year contender.

Jeff W, Friday, 5 May 2017 09:41 (six years ago) link

i can't listen to anything else. what a brilliant song.

Nourry, Friday, 5 May 2017 09:56 (six years ago) link

I love it when there's something my daughter and I can both enjoy. It's much preferable to nefarious tween marketing tweaks directing her to bullseye shit like Panic! At the Disco and Twenty One Pilots.

Taylor looks like such a nice boyfriend.

Hey y’all.

the ghost of markers, Sunday, 7 May 2017 19:16 (six years ago) link

This album is fantastic. It's just the kind of album I needed in my life right now.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 10 May 2017 23:23 (six years ago) link

oh awesome! thought this wasn't out till summer for some reason.

just when I thought this was their twist-free pop record, the penultimate track shows up

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 11 May 2017 12:30 (six years ago) link

"Forgiveness" is either a blatant Haim lift or a working through of the same influences.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 11 May 2017 12:36 (six years ago) link

hayley has lately been enthusing about haim all over twitter fyi

del esdichado (NickB), Thursday, 11 May 2017 12:42 (six years ago) link

I was going to say, who needs a new Haim?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 11 May 2017 13:45 (six years ago) link

Two quick observations: drummer has some fallback hi-hat on the 2 and 4 beats, and guitarist really likes those little African-esque licks. Both of which work, to my ears.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 11 May 2017 13:47 (six years ago) link

yeah, lots of high life accents

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 11 May 2017 13:48 (six years ago) link

"forgiveness" is easily the best song i've heard this year & will prob destroy anything on the haim album--and i love haim!

J0rdan S., Thursday, 11 May 2017 13:52 (six years ago) link

It's got sort of 1975 vibes about it, too. And, um, "Cherish." Lovely, though.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 11 May 2017 14:02 (six years ago) link

Fake Happy is my immediate favourite. I love how those synths come in after that misleading intro.

No Friend is the only one I'm not really into. I don't think they really pulled off what they were going for. It's the only misfire on the album though, everything else sounds so good.

kitchen person, Thursday, 11 May 2017 14:09 (six years ago) link

think of "no friend" as a dark inverse coda to "idle worship" bc... well, it is, but i think those are the terms on which it works

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 May 2017 14:17 (six years ago) link

Pool is my favourite at the moment, but the first seven tracks are all pretty fantastic

No Friend would probably be fine if it were like a minute, doesn't really need to be longer than the track it's an outro to

ufo, Thursday, 11 May 2017 15:20 (six years ago) link

is that Taylor singing "No Friend"?

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 11 May 2017 15:21 (six years ago) link

that is aaron weiss from the band mewithoutyou

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 May 2017 15:21 (six years ago) link

that setlist :)

Evan R, Thursday, 11 May 2017 18:45 (six years ago) link

i just filed my review so i feel like now i can say that i don't get caramanica's

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:02 (six years ago) link

i find it hard to get into these guys, a couple of amazing songs aside

k3vin k., Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:05 (six years ago) link

I get the gist of Caramanica's review; he pretty much voices all of my initial reservations about this album (too schticky, a waste of a great rock singer). I do think the tone is off, though. He isn't really giving the band any credit for their range (he brushes off the s/t album), and seems to box them in with a style of music they aren't interested anymore. It shouldn't be any great shock that bands can evolve over 10 years

Evan R, Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:26 (six years ago) link

and using synths isn't a touchstone of '80s bands (also, after three listens, I don't hear an egregious use of synths; they're more for the occasional garnish).

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:31 (six years ago) link

a waste of a great rock singer

i think listening to the album basically dispatches this criticism

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:31 (six years ago) link

xpost Yeah, definitely seems more sophisti-pop.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:32 (six years ago) link

first couple of listens and i'm not really feeling this at all. it did take a few plays for say-they-say-they-told-meeeyyy to get its hooks into me though

del esdichado (NickB), Friday, 12 May 2017 08:58 (six years ago) link

off the bat i'm liking idle worship, i like the tension in the vocals there

caught in the middle - wtf is this ace of base garbage?

del esdichado (NickB), Friday, 12 May 2017 09:07 (six years ago) link

I generally like Caramanica, but this line -- "some of her essential grit is lost to the machines" -- I mean, talk about your '80s revivalism. It's like reading Rolling Stone in 1983.

hard times

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Friday, 12 May 2017 12:36 (six years ago) link

First listen to this, and it was really disheartening. I'm sure it will grow on me, because the songs are solid and Hayley brought her A game. But I find the whole Wedding Singer cosplay thing insufferably tacky, and all those brittle '80s polyrhythms just sound shitty and one-trick to me.
