dude had no issue with Comey being in charge of "journalism" when it was all her emails all the time, of course

@matthewamiller
Comey's "speak or conceal" explanation falls completely apart when you recall he chose "speak" for the Clinton probe & "conceal" for Trump.

@ggreenwald
This is by far the most compelling grievance against Comey's actions.

I love Wikileaks journalism.

http://mashable.com/2016/09/11/wikileaks-hillary-clinton-health-poll.amp

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/295116-wikileaks-piles-on-to-clinton-earpiece

Especially when they pushed the conspiracy that Seth Rich was murdered, decontextualized an email to make it seem like DNC staffers called Latinos "taco bowls" and tweeted out link to a pizza gate investigation.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 16:33 (seven years ago) link

bad journalism is not illegal

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 16:38 (seven years ago) link

Comey's not entirely wrong. Context-free document dumps are not "journalism"; they're closer to the uncritical passing on of the words of anonymous spokespeople that's rightly criticized as "stenography."

Wikileaks : Journalism :: IMDB Comments : Film Criticism

Adding: And you don't have to want Comey in charge of deciding what is and isn't journalism to understand the difference, either.

@ggreenwald
One small problem w/ [Comey's] claim, among many, is WL redacted large amounts of info in recent publication of CIA docs:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/07/world/europe/wikileaks-cia-hacking.html

The initial release, which WikiLeaks said was only the first installment in a larger collection of secret C.I.A. material, included 7,818 web pages with 943 attachments, many of them partly redacted by WikiLeaks editors to avoid disclosing the actual code for cyberweapons.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 16:54 (seven years ago) link

The contextless document dump vs journalism distinction shouldn't be ignored. Their role in "climate gate" is a good case study http://electionado.com/canvas/1480388925211 . If you went solely off of the way Greenwald and his fans talk about WL you wouldn't have any awareness of the examples I listed or what WL has become in general now and that's a problem if we're going to refer to him on this issue.

Lehey just brought up that a call for a Muslin ban exists *right now* on Trump's campaign site.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 17:14 (seven years ago) link

my hot take is that we're never gonna get anything useful out of Comey. He will never implicate himself as having done anything wrong to influence the election, and the FBI investigation into Trump + Russia (after being dragged out as long as possible) will not deliver any actionable evidence. Comey's self-interest would seem to dictate that he give the appearance of having conducted a thorough investigation while not turning up anything.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 17:16 (seven years ago) link

that being the case, these hearings are mostly theater

Greenwald replied (to criticism from Naomi Klein): “I absolutely agree with you that there are very profound concerns about individual privacy that are being trampled over with these [Podesta] leaks and certainly with the ones to come. And we probably haven’t given that enough thought, primarily because what ends up happening is the leaks happen; journalists like me give lip service to the fact that it’s too bad they weren’t curated, they should have been; and then everyone starts digging into them for newsworthy stories. Maybe it’s been rewarding that approach, maybe it’s just not given sufficient attention to it, but I’m not sure what the answer is, because as long as the capability exists, I think people are going to continue to do it.”

Speaking about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who published the leaks without curation, Greenwald said: “[T]here are also very extreme concerns from vesting so much power in one person. It’s sort of ironic given that the NSA scandal and all these other scandals arose out of the idea that a tiny number of people, in secret, with no accountability, have been making these choices. And now you have other people posing as their adversaries creating a similar framework for themselves.”

The only FBI directors who've ever seeped into my consciousness are this guy and Louis Freeh (and Hoover, of course), so...has there ever been an FBI director who wasn't a worthless piece of shit?

in actually significant news, the WaPo's whip count for the ACA repeal vote keeps getting more interesting - Upton and Long come out in support, but the "leaning or stated no" column stays the same (currently 20) and the "undecided or unclear" number keeps going UP (currently 36). Still a little worried something is going to pass but who knows, things seem p shaky.

Senate still not expected to go for it?

unintelligible:

President Donald Trump asserted on Wednesday that the Israel government and the Palestinian Authority “get along unbelievably well.” During a press conference with State of Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas, Trump praised Palestinian National Authority for its efforts to combat ISIS.

“I also applaud the Palestinian Authority’s continued cooperation with Israel,” Trump said. “They get along unbelievably well. They work together beautifully.” The U.S. president noted that there could be “no lasting peace” unless all Palestinian leaders spoke out against hate. “There’s such hatred,” he added. “But hopefully there won’t be such hatred for very long.”

For a long time the only one I ever knew was William Sessions from the little screen that used to be on arcade games:

that seems like a particularly ineffective game to put that message on, given the central message of N.A.R.C. was "if you sell drugs you will get blown up with a rocket launcher"

President Trump plans to mark National Day of Prayer on Thursday by issuing an executive order that makes it easier for churches and other religious groups to actively participate in politics without risking their tax-exempt status, several administration officials said.

Seems like this won't end well.
