The civil war quote, maybe someone already pointed this out and I missed it, but aside from Trump being a dumbass that was a textbook example of concern trolling wasn't it? "I just have a few questions about this issue..."

In this case specifically there's also a strong dogwhistle element. Not saying Trump really intended it that way, but it doesn't seem unlikely whoever's whistling in his ear did.

Wasn't there a military background guy about a month and a half ago who turned down a cabinet position because he was too integrally involved in his firm to divest from it? Thought the same thing then too.

gnaw on my meat oreo (bizarro gazzara), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 10:08 (seven years ago) link

Well it's great that some people you might not think it of would actually have a sense of ethics but that do0esn't seem to be what is currently prevalent. They're not actually thinking there might be a future in which they might be like prosecuted for corruption or whatever are they?
Trump doesn't have a millennial agenda or something does he?
I heard that Reagan believed in the Rapture meaning that God's kingdom was about to descend so it was the end of times already. Don't really think Trump thinks of a greater power but if time's about to end there will be no repercussions.

Hitching your trolley to the Turnip Train is a high-risk endeavor with likely short-term gains and long-term consequences. I would think that anyone who can visualize a moment past, say, June of 2017 would think twice about pursuing that day in paradise.

knox county sheriff jimmy jones (or his people) is running for county mayor & apparently believe otherwise:

Jones said he knows he is known for spouting off and not being politically correct, but he said he thinks people want honesty and someone different, not unlike President Donald Trump.

“Obviously, there’s a correlation, and I think that’s what the people who are out here that work and vote and have jobs every day look at too,” he said. “I think they don’t want the rhetoric. They want somebody to do the things that they think are right because that’s what they would do.”

I hope a transom falls on his head:

Ben Carson does not like the creature comforts, at least not for low-income Americans reliant on the government for a helping hand.

As he toured facilities for the poor in Ohio last week, Mr. Carson, the neurosurgeon-turned-housing secretary, joked that a relatively well-appointed apartment complex for veterans lacked “only pool tables.” He inquired at one stop whether animals were allowed. At yet another, he nodded, plainly happy, as officials explained how they had stacked dozens of bunk beds inside a homeless shelter and purposefully did not provide televisions.

Compassion, Mr. Carson explained in an interview, means not giving people “a comfortable setting that would make somebody want to say: ‘I’ll just stay here. They will take care of me.’”

I'm reminded of the idea that making a Victorian poor house a harsh regime would make it less alluring for the non-deserving poor.
& still stuck with that the only possible epistemology is that everything is a meritocracy where anybody who does work hard will inevitably succeed and not have adversity of any kind be insurmountable.
Also that idea of karma and teh caste system. If you're badly off in this life you inevitably did something rotten in a past one.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 13:34 (seven years ago) link

I wasn't sure that Carson would be able to reach the lofty dehumanizing heights of this administration but it would appear that he's rising to the challenge. These guys should really just go ahead and criminalize poverty already, cut to the chase.

Comey says information pumped out by Wikileaks is not journalistic but simply "intelligence porn"

@ggreenwald
Who wants the FBI & CIA Directors to be the arbiters of what is and is not real "journalism"? Apparently, many people do.

@matthewamiller
Comey's "speak or conceal" explanation falls completely apart when you recall he chose "speak" for the Clinton probe & "conceal" for Trump.

@ggreenwald
This is by far the most compelling grievance against Comey's actions.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 16:09 (seven years ago) link

I love Wikileaks journalism.

http://mashable.com/2016/09/11/wikileaks-hillary-clinton-health-poll.amp

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/295116-wikileaks-piles-on-to-clinton-earpiece

Especially when they pushed the conspiracy that Seth Rich was murdered, decontextualized an email to make it seem like DNC staffers called Latinos "taco bowls" and tweeted out link to a pizza gate investigation.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 16:33 (seven years ago) link

bad journalism is not illegal

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 16:38 (seven years ago) link

Comey's not entirely wrong. Context-free document dumps are not "journalism"; they're closer to the uncritical passing on of the words of anonymous spokespeople that's rightly criticized as "stenography."

Wikileaks : Journalism :: IMDB Comments : Film Criticism

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 16:44 (seven years ago) link

Adding: And you don't have to want Comey in charge of deciding what is and isn't journalism to understand the difference, either.

Lauren Schumer Donor (Phil D.), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 16:45 (seven years ago) link

@ggreenwald
One small problem w/ [Comey's] claim, among many, is WL redacted large amounts of info in recent publication of CIA docs:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/07/world/europe/wikileaks-cia-hacking.html

The initial release, which WikiLeaks said was only the first installment in a larger collection of secret C.I.A. material, included 7,818 web pages with 943 attachments, many of them partly redacted by WikiLeaks editors to avoid disclosing the actual code for cyberweapons.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 3 May 2017 16:54 (seven years ago) link

The contextless document dump vs journalism distinction shouldn't be ignored. Their role in "climate gate" is a good case study http://electionado.com/canvas/1480388925211 . If you went solely off of the way Greenwald and his fans talk about WL you wouldn't have any awareness of the examples I listed or what WL has become in general now and that's a problem if we're going to refer to him on this issue.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 17:10 (seven years ago) link

Lehey just brought up that a call for a Muslin ban exists *right now* on Trump's campaign site.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 17:14 (seven years ago) link

my hot take is that we're never gonna get anything useful out of Comey. He will never implicate himself as having done anything wrong to influence the election, and the FBI investigation into Trump + Russia (after being dragged out as long as possible) will not deliver any actionable evidence. Comey's self-interest would seem to dictate that he give the appearance of having conducted a thorough investigation while not turning up anything.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 17:16 (seven years ago) link

that being the case, these hearings are mostly theater
