"embraced by a new Doritos generation" might be closer to the truth.

scott seward, Friday, 28 April 2017 20:46 (seven years ago) link

Oh, ffs.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Friday, 28 April 2017 20:51 (seven years ago) link

Klaus's label had good distro in the 80's. not that hard to come by. prog people who turned into new age people bought a lot of that stuff. Software had a bunch of albums!

scott seward, Friday, 28 April 2017 20:51 (seven years ago) link

waiting for the inevitable Dancing Fantasy resurgence

(seriously, they're better than Software)

Wimmels, Friday, 28 April 2017 23:40 (seven years ago) link

that was a few years ago already

dancing fantasy was probably sampled in a lot of vaporwave tunes

from whosampled.com:

Macintosh Plus's ECCOと悪寒ダイビング sample of Dancing Fantasy's Déjà Vu
Macintosh Plus's 数学 sample of Dancing Fantasy's Worldwide
Macintosh Plus's 待機 sample of Dancing Fantasy's Hang Loose
Macintosh Plus's ピコ sample of Dancing Fantasy's Carioca Groove

pitchfork, day 6752: first deployment of autoplaying videos with sound that don't appear above the fold so you have no idea where the sound is or how to stop it.

http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/1501-amber-coffman-on-why-her-solo-debut-is-more-than-a-breakup-album/

Karl Malone, Monday, 1 May 2017 15:26 (seven years ago) link

autoplay is a scourge

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 1 May 2017 15:27 (seven years ago) link

i think that's something to do with the vevo embed, those always seem to autoplay now

ufo, Monday, 1 May 2017 15:29 (seven years ago) link

I am usually listening to Spotify when I go onto Pitchfork (searching for what they said about such-and-such album). Drives me crazy that something in their autoplay embeds forces Spotify to stop playing. And yet the audio for their autoplay doesn't actually come on unless I tap for sound. So that's irritating.

Are there any actual Chromatics fans in real life, aside from a handful of Pitchfork writers? Seriously, the hagiography of this guy is absurd. I have literally never heard a single human being talk about this band, and there are two threads on ILX with fewer than twenty posts between them.

Wimmels, Thursday, 4 May 2017 13:21 (six years ago) link

For reference: there are ten Blue Nile threads on ILX

Wimmels, Thursday, 4 May 2017 13:22 (six years ago) link

I'm so old that I remember when Chromatics was a noise band on the same label that put out Locust records

Oh, I have a friend who is a huge Chromatics fan! They exist.

love the chromatics and the IDIB comps

nomar, Thursday, 4 May 2017 16:24 (six years ago) link

but are you in real life?

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Thursday, 4 May 2017 16:25 (six years ago) link

I love the Chromatics but between IDIB's determination to reissue and repackage the same material multiple times, and the music news cycle willing to report every brainfart of Johnny Jewel as exciting developments, I can see why they would seem over-exposed.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 4 May 2017 18:03 (six years ago) link

I would consider Chromatics an ILM staple - they've placed in EOY polls a couple of times

Choco Blavatsky (seandalai), Thursday, 4 May 2017 20:20 (six years ago) link

i love chromatics, but they def are one of "those critically feted bands" to a degree that's sometimes annoying

austinb, Friday, 5 May 2017 01:31 (six years ago) link

i quite liked them for a while but i really listened to their last (?) album hard and ended up being disillusioned by how little they/JJ had to 'say'

flappy bird, Friday, 12 May 2017 03:20 (six years ago) link

Can anyone explain PWR BTTM to me, are they supposed to be really great? I feel like Pitchfork is the only place I'd read about them.

nomar, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 04:55 (six years ago) link

the first album had some riffs but ehh

they were very popular with a certain crowd and it's an absolutely insane story, i've never seen or read about a band that went from the verge of success to being dropped and erased by everyone. the swift elimination came about because the allegations against one of the members was completely antithetical to the message and conceit of their band.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 05:21 (six years ago) link

Pitchfork is probably just relieved that this news broke out before they had a chance to publish a review of the album.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 14:30 (six years ago) link

jfc pitchfork enough with the Master of None bullshit

flappy bird, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 17:23 (six years ago) link

ugh that looks like one of those Slate branded content things about "How TV show X creates a soundtrack for NOW"

duped and used by my worst Miss U (President Keyes), Tuesday, 16 May 2017 17:34 (six years ago) link

the swift elimination came about because the allegations against one of the members was completely antithetical to the message and conceit of their band.

it didn't help that their initial response was a straight up lie, that this was the first time they heard of the rape allegations, when in reality various band members and colleagues knew of it for months and had been keeping quiet for the good of their careers.

fuck all these enabling assholes i hope they choke on their glitter

flappy bird, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 22:02 (six years ago) link

Didn't they know about the allegations against Hopkins for like three months? Sat on the story hoping it would go away. Read that somewhere, no idea if it's true. if it is though...
