The red rocks around sedona (and even moreso in Oak Creek Canyon to the north) are very nice (tho not particularly outstanding), but their wildness is compromised by Sedona and its dud jeep-tour and crystal-worship culture.

I'd also add to that the cliched art culture, overpriced real estate, and invasionary spas. I'd rather go to the Badlands myself (or a bunch of places in Utah), but Sedona isn't ruined yet. The baby boomers might be able to accomplish that in the next couple of decades though.

there are places near sedona which aren't all jeep-touristy, new-agey, though. but if you really wanna get that type of landscape without the imprint of yuppy culture, go up north to s. utah.
