I like how Burial dropped one of the best releases of the decade (Rival Dealer EP) before saying PEACE OUT IMMA play Dark Souls... forever apparently.

Except that he just released the Young Death/Nightmarket EP last fall?

Austin, Friday, 21 April 2017 06:02 (six years ago) link

Maybe he's still working on beating Dark Souls. He's this close to reaching the final boss.

Didn't like that at all so I didn't count it. :P

I'm into it.

Tbf there were multiple Dark Souls games released since then, takes a lot of time!

Not very interesting ones.

I don't know, 'Beachfires' is pretty good as an ambient thing.

But yeah, otherwise, these are some of his least captivating things.

i think "beachfires" is really cool, it sounds vaguely like it's telling a story to me, there's just a little more going on in the structure.. but not in an over the top clichedwaaambient way

brimstead, Friday, 15 September 2017 00:26 (six years ago) link

I think this is good. Somebody commission him to do the dark souls soundtrack

Love this. Nothing revolutionary, but really like how the bouncy bass is restrained.

Yeah, I thought those two newest tracks were at least decent. A lot more "beaty" than everything else he's done in the past year.

He's been surprisingly prolific over the last twelve months. To recap, the past year we've heard:

Young Death
Nightmarket
Subtemple
Beachfires
Rodent
Pre Dawn
Indoors

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Friday, 10 November 2017 17:46 (six years ago) link

Indoors is a lot more playful than I expected

"claustro" has to be his best track since rival dealer

ufo, Thursday, 30 May 2019 13:30 (four years ago) link

four months pass...

so, if you take all of his tracks released under just burial post-rival dealer, you can make a pretty damn good full length. we're talking 2015-present basically.

chronologically, the songs are:

temple sleeper
young death
nightmarket
subtemple
beach fires
pre dawn
indoors
rodent
claustro
state forest

that he staggered the release of this material over the course of several years i think lessened its collective impact, unfortunately. but if you take this stuff in as the proper full length follow-up to untrue, it's a pretty bold step (forward?).

also totally with ufo on 'claustro' being an absolute jam and one of his best.

temple sleeper
young death
nightmarket
subtemple
beach fires
pre dawn
indoors
rodent
claustro
state forest

so the reason for this revive is because i've been listening to a playlist of just this tracklist and it's really pretty good. the sequence this way is pretty wild. hooks you up with a dope beat up front with 'temple sleeper' but then uses the hard transitions on 'young death' and 'nightmarket' to go way off into experimental (arguably non-musical) territory until 'predawn' gets back into beatier songs. the transition from 'indoors' into 'rodent' into 'claustro' is very epic and good. 'state forest' as the closer is so satisfying after what preceded it.

burial is good fall music, btw.

'Street Halo' through 'Rival Dealer' probably amounts to my favourite album-or-two worth of Burial--equivalent to a 3rd and 4th LP.

The work post'Rival' has felt a little wispy and indistinct--but I'll try queuing it up as a body.

Soundslike, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 02:17 (four years ago) link

yeah the 2011-2013 releases from Street Halo to Rival Dealer are absolutely his best work (especially Rival Dealer which is absolutely transcendent) and have far surpassed Untrue for me. the Massive Attack remix EP from that period is unfairly overlooked too

his work since has been pretty hit and miss unfortunately. the ambient pieces have been pleasant enough but relatively underwhelming and while i love "claustro", the other more beat-driven tracks he's released over the past few years haven't done much for me.

ufo, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 11:44 (four years ago) link

Genuinely love 'Subtemple' as an ambient piece but 'Young Death' is the best thing he's done in this timeframe imo. Not into his rave revival efforts, hope he branches out further.

nashwan, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 12:26 (four years ago) link

Tried this playlist today, agreed that it works well as an album. Made me laugh when the banging beat started on pre-dawn after roughly half an hour of ambience. If this was an album, Rodent would be the hit single.

I am using your worlds, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 14:35 (four years ago) link

so, i don't know why i never did this before, but if you take the songs from his 2011-2013 releases and put them in order to form an album, not only is it really long, it's actually a pretty great follow-up to untrue. kind of takes the super pretty aspects of 'ghost hardware' and 'shell of light' and builds on them and lets it simmer until it closes super appropriately with 'come down to us'; and it ends up as a burial "album" that is actually very pleasant and life-affirming. really am starting to think that i agree with ufo in saying that this is his most fertile period. the way i sequenced it is just the running order of the eps as they were chronologically released:

street halo
nyc
stolen dog
kindred
loner
ashtray wasp
truant
rough sleeper
rival dealer
hiders
come down to us

it hangs together really tightly.

really hoping the 'claustro' / 'state forest' single is a precursor to something bigger and that that is forthcoming soon.

I think it’s really great that he’s just putting out singles now, his stuff works better for me in twenty - thirty minutes chunks

reeeeellly dug “beachfires” from a few years ago

brimstead, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 01:11 (four years ago) link

I agree that he’s only gotten better since Untrue

Burial has aged very poorly with me. It's like all the mystery has evaporated, once all the samples have been revealed.

His early work's the best for me, I like it when he keeps it simple. The first album is just about perfect.

paolo, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 15:35 (four years ago) link

I think I prefer his early stuff because it fit in really nicely with the UK music scene at the time (garage, grime and dubstep) even though he was a bit separate.

paolo, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 15:36 (four years ago) link

these two periods as records hold really well for me

nxd, Wednesday, 23 October 2019 10:57 (four years ago) link

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 23 October 2019 13:01 (four years ago) link

lol for all the talk of compiling an album out of his 10s material he's just announced a compilation of it

Tunes 2011-2019:
CD1:
01 State Forest
02 Beachfires
03 Subtemple
04 Young Death
05 Nightmarket
06 Hiders
07 Come Down to Us
08 Claustro
09 Rival Dealer

CD2:
01 Kindred
02 Loner
03 Ashtray Wasp
04 Rough Sleeper
05 Truant
06 Street Halo
07 Stolen Dog
08 NYC

missing a few tracks though - "pre dawn", "indoors", "temple sleeper" and "rodent". i guess "pre dawn", "indoors" and "temple sleeper" were't on hyperdub so that's maybe part of it, but "rodent" was. not that i really miss them

ufo, Friday, 25 October 2019 14:17 (four years ago) link

if u savages vote this into the 10s poll like rifts i will just skip its placement

the rival dealer ep on its own however, now that was always his best work imo and I'd fully support it

imago, Friday, 25 October 2019 14:22 (four years ago) link

i'm entirely behind rival dealer, that's easily a top 5 record of the decade

I will buy this comp despite already owning the Truant and Kindred CDs.

Listening to Burial on earbuds while walking in chilly weather = still one of my favorite things to do

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 25 October 2019 16:07 (four years ago) link

almost $30 with shipping and conversion via Hyperdub, hoping I can snag this domestically

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 25 October 2019 16:10 (four years ago) link

I've been kind of hoping for a Hyperdub 15 compilation to follow the five and ten year compilations
