paramore are still indiepop in my heart

Bobson Dugnutt (ulysses), Thursday, 20 April 2017 14:25 (six years ago) link

Pumarosa from London are not really twee but they seriously rule my world at the moment. They call themselves industrial spiritual, I'd say explosive hypnotic indiepop. Here is the mighty "Honey" live. The album "Witch" has been released last week.

Not sure if you want only guitar jangle tweepop or if electronic tweepop fits the bill for this thread, but my gal Deerful just released her debut album and it is banging: http://www.goldflakepaint.co.uk/album-stream-deerful-peach/

new sweet baboo is nice

little songs directed at a young child, i think. some of the songs get me a little bleary eyed being a new father and all. nice stuff.

!!! ALERT ALERT ALERT !!!

Chickfactor 25 - 11/12 November at the Lexington, London:

11th:

THE PASTELS
LOIS
KICKING GIANT
KITES AT NIGHT (feat Rose Melberg)

12th

THE SOFTIES
STEVIE JACKSON (from Belle & Sebastian)
THE WOULD-BE-GOODS
THE CATENARY WIRES

I probably wouldn't have put a Kicking Giant reunion high on my list, but I'm unexpectedly happy about it anyway. I am however quite expectedly excited about seeing the Softies.

Thanks for the recommendations, Maura. I've been really out of the loop on indiepop for a long time. My wife found an online radio show called B0ardcast a couple of years ago and we got into some newer bands through that but the DJ changed style a year or so ago and doesn't play that kind of music anymore.

That's a great song, the video is terrible though. No lip synching, ridiculous costumes, totally over the top. But I don't feel that the music is twee. But it is very tuneful and danceable. In the end I always ask myself what twee is. The Field Mice, The Sundays, Everything But the Girl?

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 1 August 2017 18:55 (six years ago) link

That groove cannot be twee. Too sexy to be twee.

I love that Matinée Records is still around and still plugging away. Here's a comp they put out a couple of months ago with an old-ish track from Catenary Wires (Amelia Fletcher's new band - they're playing the Chickfactor London gig in November) and some really fun new stuff. My picks are Last Leaves and Strawberry Whiplash.

wow new even as we speak! that IS big news. and that star tropics album really grows on you.

TOPS remind me of Stars, the first record. Seems like the new album is going to be really good. It could be twee, Even As We Speak and the Orchids got a groove on once in a while.

Any Chorusgirl fans here? Their s/t album was one of my favorites from 2015 and I'm happy to see they've been recording album #2 this summer. Their website references Lush, Cure, Breeders, Bangles; also have seen comparisons to Dum Dum Girls and Veronica Falls, all of which I suppose are accurate, but the overall vibe of the first record reminded me most of the Aislers Set's "How I Learned to Write Backwards." Don't think they've released any of the new material yet but looking forward to it.

Alvvays' album, Antisociaites, is easily one of my top ten albums released this year. There's nothing really revolutionary about their sound, it's just has a consistently-awesome indiepop sound embedded throughout.

The Gurr album is one of my favorite things to go back to all year. Even though it officially came out last October, vinyl didn't drop until this past summer so it's in for 2017 on a technicality I think.

Anyway, this is the song that hooked me first, but the whole album is crazy good.

it's interesting how the folks putting on twee festivals are still mired 30 years in the past. there are good things being released still but it all seems very much by people wholly on their own and without the thrust of labels and without any unifying "scene" like it was in the past. somehow this person thelazylazyme on youtube finds all sorts of marvelous indiepop-ish things and most of them are from bandcamp.
the sound of arrows new record is lovely, of course they aren't indiepop and likely never were but they started on labrador, so i cheat.
most things posted on this thread are a bit depressing.
not sure about marty as a singer in the last leaves.
oh and i was terribly excited when i heard even as we speak released a new 10 inch but then, mostly, it was only mediocre, which seems to be the general trend.

Keythkeythkeyth, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 15:48 (six years ago) link

thelazylazyme just posted a scott mannion song which is lovely and that is interesting because he was tokey tones and they were not so great really but they had nice covers. maybe it was the move to spain.

Keythkeythkeyth, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 15:53 (six years ago) link

I guess this is where I voice a mild interest on the forthcoming Teleman EP

imago, Wednesday, 1 November 2017 15:55 (six years ago) link

I'm probably part of the problem since I hardly go to indiepop gigs any more and haven't really kept up with new stuff that much (I do like some of the bands mentioned on this thread so far but I've only heard a few).

I saw a French band called the Soap Opera on Friday, they were OK. I am looking forward to the Chickfactor shows this weekend in London but that's mainly old bands reuniting or just have been around forever (the Pastels). I keep meaning to go through this thread at some point and check out all the recommendations but there's so much music in the world and so little time.

Colonel Poo, Monday, 6 November 2017 11:30 (six years ago) link

I'm looking forward to the Chickfactor shows too, and for the same reason (particularly excited to see the Softies, always excited to see the Would-be-goods). Are you going to all three shows, CP?

Tim, Monday, 6 November 2017 11:35 (six years ago) link

I'm going to both nights but not the matinee show on Saturday, it's 12:30-3:30 and the evening show doesn't start til 8, if I have to wait around 4.5 hours with nothing to do I'll probably be so drunk by the time the evening event starts I won't remember any of it!

It's a bit unfortunate timing for me because Static Shock Weekend is on this weekend as well, I have to miss the Saturday at SSW because of Chickfactor but luckily the Sunday at SSW is an afternoon gig and finishes at 7 giving me just about enough time to get something to eat and get to the Lexington in time for the Chickfactor gig. That will be day 4 of SSW so I'm going to be fucked by then but I've taken Monday and Tuesday off work to recover.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 09:27 (six years ago) link

Crikey! Sounds like a busy time. I'm looking forward to the matinee show but that's partly because I know some of the kids involved. Anyway it'd be good to have a pint with you at some point in the weekend.

Tim, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 09:38 (six years ago) link

Yeah that'd be cool - I'm going to be on my own on Saturday and probably the Sunday as well by the looks of things. My wife was going to come on Sunday but I don't think she is now.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 7 November 2017 17:01 (six years ago) link

I’ll be one of the two baldheads playing terrible music downstairs at the Lexington from 4 if you want to say hello (please do).

Tim, Sunday, 12 November 2017 14:00 (six years ago) link

I'm at static shock weekend at the moment, will probably get to Lexington about 8. I'll be the tall guy with glasses wearing a Confuse t-shirt

I have a ticket to the Chickfactor show tonight. I'm in Chicago. Anyone who wants it email me - maura at maura dot com - and I'll forward it.

Excellent to meet you CP; sorry if I was drunkenly talking rubbish. Sorry also that you couldn't make it, Maura.

That was a fun weekend - Softies, Would-be-goods and Numberz being particular highlights for me.

sean gramophone, Monday, 13 November 2017 17:19 (six years ago) link

It was great to meet you too, Tim. Did the Softies play much longer after I left (was during The Best Days iirc)? They had just played my favourite song by them (Goodbye) so I wasn't completely gutted to have to leave before the end but it's my fault really, I'd debated just getting a hotel for the weekend but figured a return train ticket was £23.70 and there was no way I'd get a hotel for that.

I was indeed at the Lexington when Geeta was there/Lou Reed died - I'd been at an afternoon gig upstairs that day - do remember meeting you Koogs, don't think we talked much though?

That was the first time I'd seen the Would-Be-Goods in about 14 years, I'd seen them supporting the Aislers Set in I think 2003? It was a good set though.
