The track listing for the deluxe reissue of Prince's Purple Rain has leaked; it's a 3CD set that may also contain a DVD/Blu-Ray, since it's supposed to include two concert films as well. Street date is supposedly June 9.

JOHN COLTRANE

Rhino's New Compilation Spotlighting Coltrane's Atlantic Years Will Be Released
On June 9
The Acclaimed Documentary Chasing Trane In Theaters Now

Five Individual Releases Of The Pioneering Saxophonist's Mono Albums For Atlantic
Records Out June 16

LOS ANGELES - John Coltrane will take the spotlight this year when John Scheinfeld's highly anticipated Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary begins its theatrical run on April 14. Shortly after, Rhino will focus on the revolutionary music the "heavyweight champion" of jazz recorded for Atlantic Records with a series of releases.

It all begins on June 9 with the arrival of a new anthology that includes nine tracks selected from recordings the saxophonist made for Atlantic Records between 1959 and 1961. TRANE: THE ATLANTIC COLLECTION will be available on LP ($19.98), CD ($14.98) and digitally.

The compilation will be followed by mono reissues for five Coltrane studio albums: Giant Steps, Olé Coltrane, Coltrane Plays The Blues, Bags & Trane and The Avant-Garde. Each will be available on 180 gram LP ($21.98), and digitally on June 16, with the mono CD of the classic Giant Steps ($11.98) coming July 7. These albums were recently issued together as part of Rhino's boxed set John Coltrane: The Atlantic Years In Mono. The set received critical acclaim in 2016 including five stars from Downbeat which noted, "With no alternate takes and presented verbatim and presented as the albums were originally issued song-by-song, there is certainly a warmth, clarity and a sense of wholeness that can give new fans a fresh way to listen to Coltrane."

The mono albums and new compilation cover the time when Coltrane - after playing on Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue - was moving away from the life of a sideman and embracing the role of bandleader. The music he recorded at Atlantic features some of his finest work, including the wise blues of "Equinox," a bright, swinging version of "My Shining Hour," the exuberant "Giant Steps," and the hit single "My Favorite Things."

In the liner notes that accompany TRANE: THE ATLANTIC COLLECTION, author and noted jazz critic Ben Ratliff writes: "You can listen through this 46-minute collection of romantic or purposeful or slightly mysterious music...and get it clearly: the sense of a strikingly original sound and intelligence."

Coltrane is poised to reach a new audience this year thanks to Chasing Trane. Written and directed by critically acclaimed documentary filmmaker John Scheinfeld, it is the definitive documentary film about an outside-the-box thinker with extraordinary talent whose boundary-shattering music continues to impact and influence people around the world. Some the film's notable appearances include Bill Clinton, Sonny Rollins, and Common, with Coltrane's own words spoken by Denzel Washington. Following its theatrical launch in New York, the film will be shown in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, with additional cities planned.

I just bought the deluxe double edition of X-Ray Spex - Germfree Adolescents, which apparently was reissued in 2009. It's one of my alltime favorite albums, how did I not know about this? I checked and it wasn't mentioned in the rolling 2009 thread. Anyone know of deluxe reissue plans for Lust For Life/The Idiot, Low/Heroes, Blank Generation or New York Dolls, pipe up!

Trying to decide whether it's worth it to buy the Coltrane mono CD box set. Leaning towards no.

Oh yeah, guess I should put this here too (just now on Rolling Jazz)--note forthcoming reissue and single (check Luaka Bop to order):

Alice Coltrane Tribute show on May 21st!
RBMA Festival New York: As you may have heard, we are working very hard on a large celebration of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda. This year marks the 80th year since she was born, and the tenth year after she passed to another place. We just announced a large tribute concert and ceremony in her honor, which will take place In New York at the stunning performance and arts space called The Knockdown Center, as part of Red Bull Music Academy Festival New York. The first part of the show (that we are involved with) is inspired by the Sunday ceremonies Alice held at her Sai Anantam Ashram in California. Timed to coincide with sundown, the powerful, spiritual music will be performed by an ensemble led by music director Surya Botofasina, who grew up at the Ashram. The latter half will be a concert led by her son, Ravi Coltrane, featuring an all-star band playing music from throughout Alice's career. Tickets are available here.

A few weeks prior to that, we will be releasing the compilation of her spiritual music, which we told you about last time. Titled World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, it features a lot of beautiful artwork, photos and essays. You can pre-order it here.

Ps. if you have read this far, you may also find it interesting to learn that we have a handful of the very limited Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda 7"s we made for the "Come Together" Record Fair last weekend. If you would like to order one, you can do so here.

I have that XRay Spex double cos it turned up in HMV when they were having the closing sale. Had the previous cd so hadn't picked it up previously.

Would love an update on the 2 late 70s Iggy lps. But not sure there's even a remaster around though have seen that there is a 2 fer iof the 2 lps on cd from 2011. Thought there may be another version around. THink the 2011 thing is just a repackaging of the previous cds which I think may be late 80s.

I thought that people were slowly working through the Bowie lps and making them doubles with a loto f bonus, but that was possibly on the basis of Ziggy Stardust coming out followed by at least Aladdin Sane and that might be 15 odd years back.
Is there likely to be a Berlin era thing like the recent set that covered the build up to Young Ameriocans and Station to Station. Who Can I be Now?

I think Blank Generation was done as a single cd with some bonus tracks an age ago and that there have been some other anthologies mopping up various bits of Richard Hell's history.

Only thing I know about NY Dolls semi rarities is a llive box set from sometime around that era, Sanctuary 2008. But I think t hat covers some later stuff too by ex members.

Yeah I got the deluxe sets of everything up to Station To Station, which was in 2010. Then they stopped.

What's Rhino's reputation these days?

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 21 April 2017 09:38 (six years ago) link

Rhino's Wilson Pickett set was really nice. I've been debating whether it's worth getting the Sabbath Paranoid Super Deluxe set, I might pick it up used. They did Otis' Dictionary of Soul in October, and Led Zep's 3 disc BBC Sessions reissue was cool. Stevie Nicks and later Fleetwood Mac deluxes. Everything is tip top quality that I can tell. But they also do a lot of vinyl only reissues which I have no interest in. It's just a matter of time 'til they revive 8-tracks (I think I saw a glimmer of that), then 78s and wax cylinders.

Happy Record Store Day!
Vic Chesnutt's West of Rome now available for the first time on vinyl
New West Records is proud to present Vic Chesnutt’s second studio album, West Of Rome. Meticulously remastered and pressed on vinyl for the very first time, West Of Rome is widely regarded by fans and hailed by critics as Chesnutt’s best record. Produced by R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe, this vinyl pressing features an alternate tracklisting curated by Vic and Stipe in which “Latent/ Blatant” no longer kicks off the album and is moved to the bonus tracks. In addition, the closing instrumental which was “hidden” in the original release is now titled “Little Fugue” and has been resequenced as the fourteenth track. West Of Rome’s two studio outtakes, “Nathan” and “Where’s The Clock,” appear in the bonus tracks. Also included are four-track demos and live versions of songs from the same time period. This pressing is West Of Rome as it was meant to be.

You can pick up a copy of West of Rome at your favorite independent record store, exclusive for Record Store Day.

Drunk
“On his third and maybe most conceptually complete album, Vic Chesnutt emerges as that rare kind of artist who can see right into the living room of small-town America. Drunk is an example of how he can turn seemingly self-absorbed songs into something strangely universal. In the end, it is probably that ability which makes his genius the most readily apparent.”
– All Music

Little
“Little served notice of Chesnutt’s singular gift for finding deep truths in the commonplace, and unfurled his affectionate embrace of the sad and funny foibles that comprise the bulk of our lives.”
– No Depression

“The most elemental of any of Chesnutt’s albums.”
– Pitchfork

Coming Soon

Silver Lake
“Chesnutt’s stories always strike an honest and recognizable emotional chord, no matter how oddball the situations that surround them.”
– All Music

“Vic Chesnutt might never be famous, but his songs touch on inner truths that lurk around us. They strike something deep inside their listeners’ beings.”
– Pop Matters

Ghetto Bells
“These songs are ultimately and admirably patient and fluid, building not to grandiloquent climaxes but to a greater and greater complexity of meaning.”
– Pitchfork

“The songs are all-encompassing. They sweep you up. They really get to you.”

THE KING OF POWER-POP KICKS-OFF SOLO EUROPEAN TOUR MAY 6TH IN FRANCE!
Paul Collins' (from The Nerves, The Breakaways) two long lost EPs with his band The Beat from the early '80s make it to Lolipop Records as the first re-issue on all formats in over 30 years, from the "king of power pop" himself. To Beat Or Not To Beat was recorded in New York in 1983 at The Ranch with John Mathias (The Romantics) and Paul Collins/Steven Huff producing. It was released in the U.S. by Jem/Passport Records and then it was later released in Europe on Closer Records France and Dro Records Spain. The single "All Over The World" was featured regularly on KROQ in Los Angeles and got a lot of airplay in France and in Spain. Steve and Paul toured in Europe off that record for several years until they wound up in London where they recorded their follow-up EP Long Time Gone, just before returning to the States. Long Time Gone was released in 1985 on Closer France and Dro Spain, and both records were released as a two-fer on Wounded Bird Records in 2004. Paul recalls those days fondly, “I remember getting an $800 royalty check for 'All Over The World' when I was living in San Francisco so I went out and bought a used green Datsun B210! I would always hum 'All Over The World' as I drove up and down all those hills in SF!"

Paul Collins' Beat's Long Time Gone / To Beat Or Not To Beat will be released on vinyl, CD, cassette and digital formats April 28th via Lolipop Records (distributed by Cobraside Distribution).

Plasmatics - Live! Rod Swenson's Lost Tapes 1978-81
coming to DVD and VOD on May 19th

The rare Wendy O. Williams / Plasmatics live footage in this DVD has, in the main, never been released before.

During the early years Plasmatics creator Rod Swenson, who directed and shot all the Wendy O. / Plasmatics conceptual videos (AKA known for his footage of the Ramones, Dead Boys, Blondie, and Motorhead among others) shot numerous Plasmatics shows the footage from which was never edited or released. Except for some short excerpts most of it until the discovery of this footage was thought to be lost or degraded (shot on tape which has been shown as with audio tape to degrade over time).

Recently during the moving of WOW / Plasmatics archive material the footage here was found unlabeled in buried boxes. While much had degraded producer / director Randy Shooter was able to discover, relabel, and with additional editing and restoration, salvage the rare and remarkable footage in this DVD. A lot of it is raw (and much of the audio is the audio from ambient video deck mics, noise and all) but the energy and power is there straight through.

The material includes two tracks from CBGBs the first of which was among the first Plasmatics shows ever as well as other footage from benchmark shows. A bonus track (Monkey Suit) features footage shot by Swenson when he was shooting the iconic album cover for "New Hope for the Wretched," but never released.

Complete details, hi-res cover art, specs, etc can be found HERE

Just got deluxe 2CD reissues of Uriah Heep's Look At Yourself, Demons and Wizards, and The Magician's Birthday in the mail. Remastered, with the second disc of each a shit-ton of supposedly previously unreleased alternate versions (not sure about that; the Castle remasters from the early 2000s had a ton of alternates, too, and realistically, how many could there actually be?). I'm waiting for the publicist to send me the 2CD versions of Very 'Eavy, Very 'Umble and Salisbury and then I'm gonna write a whole big thing about Uriah Heep for Burning Ambulance.

See Smog Veil site for more info, incl. orders:

Smog Veil Records is pleased to announce that the 2nd entry in our Platters du Cuyahoga series 2 releases, Allen Ravenstine's electronic sonata, "Terminal Drive" is now available for pre-order.

Terminal Drive is studio recording of a mythical piece of electro-acoustic music composed and performed in 1975 by Allen Ravenstine with assistance from Albert Dennis on string bass. Terminal Drive's significance in terms of Cleveland underground music cannot be understated and has been cited as partially responsible for Ravenstine's invitation to co-form the musical unit Pere Ubu in September 1975. Ravenstine gained recognition for his unusual and inventive synthesizer work in Pere Ubu, which he would also contribute to other groups such as Red Crayola and David Thomas & The Wooden Birds as well as his solo work.

Despite Terminal Drive's legendary status, it is a piece very few have heard in its complete state. Terminal Drive has never been officially released in its entirety and no complete recording of the piece could be located for many years. There have also been numerous inconsistencies as to what Terminal Drive's origins and sources were. The Pere Ubu box set Datapanik In The Year Zero (released on DGC in 1996) included a bonus disc of various Pere Ubu-related bands and projects - itself entitled Terminal Drive - that contains a 6:43 track called "Home Life" stated to have been extracted from Terminal Drive. This excerpt was all the world would hear of this fabled yet somewhat mysterious piece of music...until now.

The origins of Terminal Drive lie within the Cleveland band Hy Maya, which was centered around multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Robert Bensick, working most prominently and consistently with synthesist Ravenstine, bassist Albert Dennis, and drummer Scott Krauss. Despite playing only a handful of gigs, Hy Maya's purely experimental and highly improvisational nature working within the contexts of art rock and electronica were unlike anything that Clevelanders - used to the likes of Dragonwyck, Glass Harp, Left End, and Raspberries - had never really seen or heard before. Hy Maya, perhaps unconsciously, built upon the wilder aspects of Tonto's Expanding Headband, parts of the 1969 album An Electric Storm by White Noise, and the Sun Ra Arkestra, as well as the collective improvisation methodology of Oregon, prefiguring elements of the industrial music scene that Pere Ubu would later have considerable influence upon.

The single-sided LP is pressed on red vinyl and includes extensive liner notes written by Nick Blakey and never before published photos along with a free download card.

Hey--we recently cleaned our warehouse and found 3 (as in three and three only, if the link is bad that means they are all sold) sealed copies of the Easter Monkeys CD/DVD. First come, first served, nice price.

Smog Veil has a small limited number (we have 5 left and will not restock!!) of the Brad Warner (0DFX, Dimentia 13) directed documentary film double DVD set, "Cleveland's Screaming!" Our friends at Red Hour Records produced this release and also licensed to us The Guns double LP.

"Cleveland's Screaming!" is a documentary film about the hardcore punk rock scene in northeast Ohio in the era of Reaganomics (1981-1984). A new breed of punk rock music came about named hardcore, which led to kids forming bands and building scenes around the country, networking a community of people from all over the world. This film shows the beginnings of NEO hardcore punk's scene to its demise a few years later, as told first hand by the people and bands that were there, including interviews, rare concert footage, photos and fliers, never before seen until now. Even yours truly, Frank Smog Veil, makes an appearance in the film!!

DVD 1 - Full Length Documentary
DVD 2 - Special Bonus DVD with rare 80s concert footage, interviews and other extras

Our double LP retrospective of Cleveland's greatest hardcore band, The Guns, went out of print nearly immediately after release in 2012. We constantly get questions about it, and now we're happy to report that a repress is on the way.

For the uninitiated, hands down the top-end standard by which all other Cleveland hardcore bands should be measured, Cleveland hardcore history could not have been the same without The Guns. Scott Eakin and Dave Araca formed the band originally as a 2-piece, later adding to the lineup some amazing rippers in the form of Sean Saley, Bob Ries, and Scott Silverman. Though a couple compilation appearances is all they managed back in the day, this release collects those tracks plus all other studio recordings, as well as some choice live cuts. The LP also features Vince Rancid's original cover art as commissioned by the band in the 80s and informative liners penned by Scott's brother, Tom Dark, and Sean Saley.

"The Guns is a fitting tribute to an excellent band." --Hunter Bennett/Ugly Things #34

"This is a definite must-have for any old-school hardcore punk..." --Janelle Jones/AMP#111

The numbers: double LP with free download code, 43 songs, 2nd press limited to 500 copies, black and red marble vinyl. Test pressings have been approved and we are waiting in line at the pressing plant. Details, song stream and special sale code are available from here:

Praise for the first of our Platters du Cuyahoga series 2 releases: the legendary and never before released 1967 studio demo from Schwartz Fox Blues Crusade "Sunday Morning Revival":

"...destined to bring a smile to the face of Butterfield and Musselwhite fans far and wide while deepening the already rich history of its municipality..." --Joseph Neff/The Vinyl District

"...the band winds you up and leaves you begging for more". --Elmore Magazine

"As I grew to love the blues, I wanted to try to see if we could come up with something worthy of recording, and the only way to do that was to actually try it."
- Jimmy Fox (James Gang/Schwartz Fox Blues Crusade)

Though once believed to have been lost or to only exist in theory, the lone 1967 studio demo recording by The Schwartz-Fox Blues Crusade featuring Mr. Stress - consisting of Cleveland legends and then members of the James Gang and Mr Stress Blues Band, Glenn Schwartz (guitar/vocals), Jimmy Fox (drums) Bill "Mr. Stress" Miller (vocals/harmonica), Tom Kriss (bass), Rich Kriss (guitar/vocals), and Mike Sands (piano) - is finally being released for music fans to savor and enjoy.

9 studio tracks of pure post-teen garage rock blues are accompanied by extensive liners and and never before published photos. The LP features colored vinyl, a free download code, and is limited to 1500 copies. Both the CD and the LP contains extensive liner notes penned by Nick Blakey and never before published photos.

Want to order the entire series 2 at a discount? Here's the details:
The three releases comprising Platters du Cuyahoga series 2 are: (1) Schwartz Fox Blues Crusade: "Sunday Morning Revival" (1967); (2) Allen Ravenstine: "Terminal Drive" (1975); and (3) a soon to be announced double LP release of studio and live recordings from the first and most influential improvisational electronic outfit that called Cleveland home (1972-1973 recordings). All the releases will be formatted on vinyl as well as CD and download/streaming. A hallmark of the series will be that each release contains extensive liner notes, all carefully crafted and researched.

Alice Coltrane
World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda
LUAKA BOP

**Shipping this Friday**

Essential Alice Coltrane recordings issued for the first time on vinyl by Luaka Bop!

Alice Coltrane was a legendary pianist, composer, spiritual leader, and the wife of John Coltrane, the most venerated and influential saxophonist in the history of jazz. In 1967, four years after meeting John, he died of liver cancer, leaving Alice a widow with four small children. Bereft of her soul mate, Alice suffered sleepless nights and severe weight loss. At her worst, she weighed only 95 pounds. She had hallucinations in which trees spoke, various beings existed on astral planes, and the sounds of “a planetary ether” spun through her brain, knocking her into a frightening unconsciousness.

The critical event of this period was not that Alice fell into the nadir of her existence, but rather that she experienced tapas, a vital period of trial. These tapas (a Sanskrit term she used to describe her suffering) helped prepare Alice for the spiritual ally she found in Swami Satchidananda, an Indian guru, with whom Alice made her first trip to India. On her second trip there, Alice had a revelation instructing her to abandon the secular life and become a spiritual teacher in the Hindu tradition – so she moved out West – eventually opening the Shanti Anantam Ashram on 47 acres she’d bought in Agoura Hills, California.

Music was the foundation of Alice’s spiritual practice. From the mid 1980’s to mid 1990’s, Alice Coltrane self-released four brilliant cassette albums. These cassettes contained a music she invented, inspired by the gospel music of the Detroit churches she grew up in, mixed together with the Indian devotional music of her religious practice, and even finds Alice singing for the first time in her recorded catalog. Originally only made available through her ashram, they are her most obscure body of work and possibly the greatest reflection of her soul.

“World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda”, is the first-ever compilation of her recordings from this period, making these songs available to the wider public - well played Luaka Bop!

This First Pressing includes two extra booklets of essays, photos, stories and a hand painted first pressing stamp - Don't sleep!

Originally released in 1981 as a cassette on the It's War Boys label - this is a precious, thrilling reminder of UK post-punk DIY at its most inspired! According to one of the performers, its themes are "moral negotiation, mistrust, social class, distress, comedy, wild adventure, chemical derangement, as well as anarchic joy, and love". Huge SOTU recommendation!

Like Nashville In Naija: Nigeria's Romance with Country Music, Yesterday and Today
COMB & RAZOR SOUND

Country music is big in Africa. Yes, we realise how absurd that probably sounds to most ears, but it’s really true: American country & western records have been tremendously popular and deeply beloved across the continent for almost a century. The people of the West African nation of Nigeria have long been not only voracious consumers of country music, but fairly enthusiastic performers of it as well. Cowboy songs have remained a consistent part of most bands’ live repertoire, but relatively few artists have dedicated themselves to actually recording country music. They did exist, though; mostly in the1970s and 80s, but they were rarely heard outside the country, and in the intervening years, most of their output has fallen through the cracks of posterity, forgotten even by ardent music fans at home. Until now. Like Nashville in Naija: Nigeria’s Romance with Country Music, Yesterday and Today collects some of the best country recordings as a loving tribute to Nigeria’s cowboy troubadours of yore. To the best of our knowledge, only in Nigeria.

Function Underground: The Black And Brown American Rock Sound 1969-1974
NOW-AGAIN RECORDS

This anthology – which has its origins in the Dante Carfagna bootleg Chains and Black Exhaust release - focuses on the Black & Latino American rock bands that spread their wings after Jimi Hendrix came to prominence, in unlikely locales such as Dayton, Ohio, Fort Wayne, Indiana and Phoenix, Arizona. Most of the music here is being reissued for the first time. Comes with an illustrated cover by French illustrator Sanghon Kim and a booklet detailing the history of Black and Latino contributions to American rock music by leading music historians and collectors. This collects private pressings from the late 60s / early 70s. There was a bootleg of many of these selections, but that was in 2002. It features 1984, Purple Snow, Jimi Macon, Ebony Rhythm Band, The Revolution, Black Maffia etc.

Hudson Mohawke
Dedsec - Watch Dogs 2 OST (RSD 2017)
WARP RECORDS

2LP in printed inners in 5mm spine sleeve, download card insert. First time on vinyl. Following the maximalist hymns of 2015’s Lantern, HudMo once again proves his versatility, applying his signature style to the soundtrack of Ubisoft’s video game Watch Dogs 2. Cinematic melodies are at the heart of his 15 original compositions, bringing the action adventure’s open world to life. Between the gothic minor chord progression of Haum Sweet Haum and the playful glistening reverie of Balance, the Glaswegian producer has a real talent for conjuring a wide set of moods to fit different scenarios. The thick bass lines and syncopated rhythms of tracks like Eye For An Eye allude to his more beat-focussed earlier work. Yet, the intricacy of the percussion throughout sets this soundtrack apart from his albums and EPs – showing HudMo progress to the next level.

Noise Addict
10,000 Kids With Guitars (RSD 2017)
NUMERO GROUP
2-LP

What does teen spirit smell like, anyway? It might smell something like Noise Addict. Like the real life stars of some sort of choose-your-own-adventure book about pursuing rock stardom, few bands ever led a more charmed existence, springing from the Sydney suburb of Bondi into seemingly overnight international fame as friends and collaborators of Sonic Youth, Fugazi, and the Beastie Boys. Through a combination of relentless drive, luck, and an admirable lack of self-doubt, Noise Addict spanned puberty(?) to surpass the haters and join Radio Birdman and Nick Cave as a strange but permanent piece of Australian punk history. The entire sordid adolescent tale is covered in incredible detail inside the black and white 16 page zine. And finally, for the first time in the history of record pressing, and for no good reason at all, the cover for 10,000 Kids With Guitars doubles as a working chalkboard. 25 tracks. Limited to 2000 copies on black vinyl.

Raymond Scott - Three Willow Park: Electronic Music from Inner Space, 1961-1971

http://www.raymondscott.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/3WP-cover-400x398.jpg

In 2000, Basta issued Manhattan Research Inc., a 2-cd set of 69 tracks recorded 1953–69, spotlighting Scott’s groundbreaking electronica — a gallery of strange sounds seemingly beamed down from UFOs. MRI also presented some of the earliest TV & radio commercials to feature electronic music, as well as early film soundtrack collaborations with Jim Henson.

Basta is now releasing Three Willow Park: Electronic Music from Inner Space, 1961–1971, containing 61 previously unissued gems by Scott. Many feature hypnotic rhythm tracks played by Scott’s Electronium — an invention which composed and performed using programmed intelligence. That Scott produced beat-oriented proto-techno before the 1970s explosion of electronic music and rhythms on the pop charts is a significant achievement that should not be overlooked.

Willow Park Center was an industrial rental complex of offices and warehouses in a Long Island suburb. Following his 1965 marital breakup, Scott set up shop at WPC. He operated a musical lab — researching, experimenting, testing, and measuring. He twirled knobs, flipped switches, and took notes. He installed equipment and machines, and used them to build new equipment and machines. This makeshift compound remained Scott’s workspace and bedroom until 1971, when he decamped for L.A. to work for Berry Gordy at Motown.

Scott was a highly qualified engineer who also happened to be a conservatory-trained (Juilliard) musician. He could compose, arrange, perform, improvise and edit, but given a shelf of hardware and a soldering iron, he could also rig an appliance to further his musical aims. Like many visionaries, Scott foreshadowed the future. He developed technological processes which were pivotal in the evolution of the fax machine. He composed a “silent” piece years before John Cage‘s 4′ 33″. He predicted (in 1944) that composers would someday reach audiences via thought transference. He applied for and was awarded numerous patents. Foremost, he developed electronic and automated sound-generating technology to craft the elements of pop music at a time when circuit-made sound was largely a novelty, used in “serious” works, or cranked-up for special effects in science fiction films.

In 1946, while still leading jazz bands, Scott established Manhattan Research, Inc., billed as “Designers and Manufacturers of Electronic Music and Musique Concrète Devices and Systems.” By the 1950s, he was using his inventions to produce commercials with electronic soundtracks, as well as developing automated sequencer technology. His friend and colleague Bob Moog said, “Scott was definitely in the forefront of developing electronic music technology and using it commercially as a musician.”

Besides the Electronium, sounds heard on Three Willow Park were generated by the Circle Machine; Clavivox; Bass-Line Generator; Bandito the Bongo Artist (a drum machine); tone, melody, rhythm and sound effects generators (some controlled, others random); oscillators, sequencers, and modulators; tape montages; and acoustic instruments and voices. These recordings, like those on MRI, define and establish Scott’s legacy in electronic music history.

V/A - Ciao! Manhattan
Ciao! Manhattan Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
vailable: April 22nd, 2017

Edie Sedgwick was the true “It Girl” of the Pop Art age; a woman who famously said she wanted “to turn the world on just for a moment”. Part of Andy Warhol’s Factory for a year in the mid-‘60s, she is widely believed to have inspired The Velvet Underground’s “Femme Fatale” as well as Bob Dylan’s “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat” and “Just Like A Woman”.

1973’s Ciao! Manhattan, the model and actor’s final film, gave some indication of why she inspired such devotion. Written and directed by Factory affiliates John Palmer and David Weisman, the movie tells a quasi-fictionalised account – a chronicle à clef in Weisman’s words – of Sedgewick’s journey from New York to Santa Barbara.

In the film, Sedgwick is Susan Superstar, a New Yorker who winds up living in a drained Santa Barbara swimming pool in a narcotic daze, life and art just a hair away from each other. Shot over a five year period, Sedgwick died of a barbiturate overdose at the age of 28 before filming wrapped in 1971.

For a movie starring some of rock’s great muses, the soundtrack fittingly features cult figures of the era: Richie Havens (“Shouldn’t All The World Be Dancing”, “To Give All Your Love Away”, “I Can’t Make It Anymore”), John Phillips (“Malibu People”) and Byrds/Flying Burrito Brothers member Skip Battin, who performs Kim Fowley’s “Citizen Kane”. Other artists are less well-known, including actor Kim Milford, who sings the stirring “Justice”, and Factory man Gino Piserchio, an artist and dear friend of Weisman, whose synthesizer compositions anchor the score.

Never before released in any format, this long-overdue pressing includes all of the above plus selected dialogue from the film, each snippet like a beat poem in its own way. The Village Voice once called Ciao! “The Citizen Kane of the drug generation"; deeply evocative of the era, the mood of the soundtrack captures the psychedelic spirit of the film, as well as the darkness and tragedy that characterized Edie’s life.

THE CARS: EXPANDED EDITIONS

Remastered And Newly Expanded Versions Candy-O And Panorama Feature The Original Album Plus Rare And Unreleased Recordings

CD, Vinyl, And Digital Versions Available From Rhino On July 28

LOS ANGELES - Following the massive success of The Cars' multi-platinum debut in 1978, the band kept its platinum-album streak rolling with Candy-O and Panorama, releases that include memorable hits like "Let's Go," "It's All I Can Do" and "Touch and Go."

For the first time ever, the band has expanded those classics to create versions that include rare and unreleased recordings taken from the sessions for each album. Band member Ric Ocasek recently supervised the remastering of these albums for last year's boxed set The Cars: The Elektra Years, ensuring superior sound quality on these new versions.

Expanded editions of CANDY-O and PANORAMA will be available on July 28 for $14.98 (CD) and $24.98 (2LP). Presented in gatefold sleeves, the vinyl versions include music on three sides with an etching on the fourth. In addition, the music on these expanded editions will be released digitally and available via streaming outlets.

For the follow-up to its eponymous debut, The Cars teamed up one again with producer Roy Thomas Baker (Queen) to record Candy-O. The album was released in the summer of 1979 and became a huge hit, peaking at #3 on the Billboard Album Chart and eventually earned quadruple-platinum certification in the U.S. alone. One of the singles, "Let's Go," was the band's first Top 15 hit on the Billboard singles chart.

CANDY-O: EXPANDED EDITION goes beyond the original album's 11 tracks with seven bonus tracks. Among the highlights are unreleased alternate mixes of "Let's Go" and "Lust For Kicks," as well as the previously unissued song "They Won't See You (The Northern Studios Version)." The album's liner notes were written by David Wild and include a new interview with guitarist Elliot Easton.

The Cars returned in the summer of 1980 with Panorama, which became the band's third consecutive platinum album and peaked at #3 on the Billboard Album Chart. The album became a fan favorite thanks to songs like "Touch And Go," "Up And Down," and "Gimme Some Slack."

PANORAMA: EXPANDED EDITION builds on the original album's 10 songs with four bonus tracks. They include the B-side "Don't Go To Pieces," as well as unreleased songs like "Shooting For You," and "Be My Baby." For this release, Wild once again pens the liner notes, along with reminisces from keyboardist Greg Hawkes.

Lynn Castle
Rose Colored Corner

Light In The Attic
LITA 157

Available: June 9th, 2017

Though most of the world may not know the songs of Lynn Castle, she is an artist whose work stretches across seven decades. She has created a diverse and vast (albeit mostly unreleased) discography of pop, folk, country, gothic, rock, punk, blues, and children’s songs. Light In The Attic Records is very excited to continue its Lee Hazlewood Archive Series with Rose Colored Corner, a collection of intimate recordings Lynn Castle made with Jack Nitzsche in 1966 and her complete recorded output with Lee Hazlewood on LHI Records. For the first time ever Lynn is sharing recordings from her personal archive and telling her story.

In the 1960s Lynn became the first lady barber in LA just as long hair on men became hip. By day she was styling The Monkees, Boyce and Hart, Del Shannon, Sonny & Cher, the Byrds and countless others…by night she was writing songs. Despite lacking the desire to self promote and a crippling insecurity that made it hard to sing in front of anyone, her songs managed to bend the ears of such industry heavyweights as Phil Spector, Jack Nitzsche and Lee Hazlewood. “It was so hard to get me to sing,” explained Castle. “I had buried it so low, I didn’t think I was good at all. Lee heard my songs and thought I was fabulous. He said, ‘Oh my god, you’re really good! Let’s cut a record.’

Her sole 1967 45 “The Lady Barber" b/w "Rose Colored Corner,” released on Lee Hazlewood Industries is a slice of psychedelic pop heaven. A full length album was never completed, but her sparse demos with Jack Nitzsche give the listener a peek of what one might have sounded like. If you are familiar with Nitzsche’s mid-60s work with Tim Buckley, Bob Lind, and Buffalo Springfield…you can squint your ears and imagine her songs bejeweled with lush strings, finger cymbals, and delicate harpsichord. Instead, the songs remained unheard until now.

Just because her songs weren’t recognized at the time doesn’t diminish their magic. This music is meant to be found and heard. Though commercial success may remain elusive, sometimes strange premonitions are realized… “When I was young, making music in the ‘60s, I had this strange thought that one day I would be this old woman, and young people would come find me and tell me that my music meant something to them.” – Lynn Castle

Keiji Haino's classic debut album Watashi Dake? will be available on vinyl for the first time since 1981 and for the first time ever as originally intended by the artist- in a special gold and silver edition.

Coming June 16

Over the last fifty years few musicians or performers have created as monumental and uncompromising a body of work as that of Keiji Haino. Through a vast number of recordings and performances Haino has staked out a ground all his own- creating a language of unparalleled intensity that defies any simple classification. For all this, his 1981 debut album Watashi Dake? has remained enigmatic. Originally released in a small edition by the legendary Pinakotheca label, the album was heard by only a select few in Japan and far fewer overseas. Original vinyl copies became impossibly rare and highly sought after the world over.

Watashi Dake? presents a haunting vision – stark vocals, whispered and screamed, punctuate dark silences. Intricate and sharp guitar figures interweave, repeat and stretch, trance-like, emerging from dark recesses. Written and composed on the spot – Haino's vision is one of deep spiritual depths that distantly evokes 1920's blues and medieval music- yet is unlike anything ever committed to record before or since. Coupled with starkly minimal packaging featuring the now iconic cover photographs by legendary photographer Gin Satoh, the album is a startling and fully realized artistic statement.

Produced in close cooperation with Keiji Haino as well as Gin Satoh, Black Editions is proud to make this masterpiece of underground music its inaugural release. Re-issued on LP for the very first time, it is also the first ever edition to feature the originally intended metallic gold and silver artwork. The release also presents the first ever translation of the lyrics and titles by Alan Cummings. Each album also includes a digital download with an extended bonus live track from that era.

This special edition was meticulously remastered by Dave Cooley at Elysian Masters and cut by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Pressed to high quality vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI).

It comes housed in specially printed heavy Stoughton tip-on jackets with custom printed matte metallic gold and silver covers with black on black inserts and extras.

xpost. Candy-O is such an amazing album. While I'm happy for a reissue, I really want some crazy huge box set with demos, live, etc. I could listen to multiple versions of Shoo-Be-Doo happily for a full day. Probably one of the best follow ups to a theoretically unfollow-up-able debut. Cars stinginess with extra stuff = annoying.

**Shipping in mid June - Art Edition of 100 copies** The year 2007 saw one of the most remarkable findings in the long treasure-hunting history of Die Schachtel: the complete set of recordings of the early manifestation (1967-1969) of one of the most legendary improv group of all times, the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. Rescued by the private archives of Mr. Walter Branchi, one of the original founding members – alongside with Franco Evangelisti, Ennio Morricone, Ivan Vandor, Roland Kayn, Egisto Macchi, Mario Bertoncini and John Heineman – the tapes were then restored in their entirety, but only a part of them were published in an epic 500 copies -CD-only boxset titled "Azioni 1967-1969", which also featured a DVD with the original film "Nuova Consonanza" shot by Theo Gallher during the rehearsal and the concert that the group held on March 19th and 20th, 1967, at the Galleria d'arte Moderna in Rome. Spanning from free-jazz to total abstract noise to wild electronic sounds (thanks mainly to the wizardry of Roland Kayn and Walter Branchi), their music was – and remains – one of the most dynamic, original and uncompromising expression of a period defined by intense experimentation and musical bravery, that anticipated a lot of the experiments to come in later years. Or, to put it simple, "They were utterly unique", as per the words that John Zorn – a long time admirer of the Gruppo – expressely wrote for this edition.

To mark the 10-years anniversary of its original release, and to finally make it available for the vinyl aficionados throughout the world, Die Schachtel is proud to present AZIONI/REAZIONI 1967-1969, the complete cycle of improvisations (which in fact means thirteen additional inedit pieces, spanning over 2 and a half LPs and two CDs ), taken from the original tapes, lovingly remastered by Mr. Giuseppe Ielasi and masterly cut to five black vinyls, with a new design and an even more complete information apparatus, that includes a 64 page LP-size book in English and Italian, complete with essays, memories from the members of the Group, a new article by Valentina Bertolani exploring in detail the techniques of the group (based on the enclosed DVD), a chronology and a collection of original reviews by Maurizio Farina, and – to add an additional cherry on the almost rather juicy cake - a set of stunning (and inedit) black and white photos of the group playing in the glorious Venice "Teatro della Fenice" in 1968, taken from the archives of the Venice Biennale.

This is your unique opportunity to grab one of the 100 Limited Collector Edition, the only ones complete with both 5LPs, 4CDs and 1DVD, the coffee-table book, an exclusive large poster and – to add an even more appealing dimension to the whole thing – hosted in a hand made (in Italy) custom wooden boxset designed by Dinamomilano, whose stunning tactile, "arte-povera" inspired artwork (by Dinamomilano as well) is in fact made by two laser-cut pieces of black rubber and white felt, complete with a matt grey foil-stamped title on the side. You can almost feel the weight of the edition (in metaphorical terms too).

To sum it up, the monumental "AZIONI/REAZIONI" boxset includes:

- 5 vinyl LPs

- 4 CDs

- 1 DVD (with English and Italian subtitles)

- 1 large poster on high-quality paper

- a 64-page sewn-bound large book

- handmade wooden boxset with rubber and felt motif

Please consider that this Limited Edition will be followed by a "regular" one, comprised by 5 LPs+DVD+book (hence no CDs and poster), hosted in a standard cardboard boxset, and a 4CD+DVD+book (hence no vinyls) edition. Please also bear in mind that this is going to be a 1-timer pressing: no further pressing are foreseen for the years to come.

We suggest you don't delay and act now... the expression has never been more appropriated.

Boombox 2
Early Independent Hip Hop, Electro and Disco Rap 1979 - 83
SOUL JAZZ RECORDS
(3-LP, CD, mp3)

Out this Friday worldwide in all good retail and internet stores.

Soul Jazz Records’ new Boombox 2 is a new selection of early rap music from the period 1979-83, with barely a household name in sight. Featured here are some the earliest hip-hop records that came out of New York City following the enormous commercial success of the first ever rap record, ‘Rapper’s Delight’ by the Sugarhill Gang, in September 1979. Artists and producers alike tried to jump aboard the new commercial possibilities of hip-hop. By the end of the year there were 30 hip-hop singles, all released by independent New York labels. The following year there were over 100 more, and so on.

Boombox 2 tells the story of how hip-hop went from its evolutionary roots in the Bronx through DJs Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa through to this second phase where veteran music producers – Paul Winley, Peter Brown, Joe Robinson and others – all based in Harlem, began to put rap on vinyl for the first time.

Harlem is also where the separate worlds of disco and hip-hop met through the styles and influence of earlier ‘uptown’ DJs - DJ Hollywood and Eddie Cheba. In similar fashion these veteran Harlem-based producers instinctively tapped into a long lineage of African-American rhythm and blues, soul and disco.

The album features many early and rare cuts from the first generation of early rap artists including Lovebug Starski (as Little Starsky), Busy Bee, Eddie Cheba, Kool DJ AJ as well as many other little known artists.

Boombox 2 is a triple-vinyl set (+ download code) LP and double CD pack that features extensive text, exclusive interviews and stunning photography by Jamel Shabazz, Martha Cooper and others.

Reviews of Boombox 1:

‘The vital launch pad between hip-hop’s birth and its worldwide impact’ THE WIRE

‘This compilation of early rap is a legit party in a box, one of the best Soul Jazz Records releases in years.’ FACT

Vodou Drums in Haiti 2
The Living Gods Of Haiti : 21st Century Ritual Drums & Spirit Possession
Drummers Of The Societe Absolument Guinin

Soul Jazz Records’ new album features the truly intense, hypnotic and fascinating Vodou drums of Haiti, a stunning collection of trance-like rhythms and beats traditionally used to induce spirit possession in the Vodou religion.

Soul Jazz Records first journeyed to Haiti in 1996 to record a series of three albums about Haitian Vodou music and culture. One of these, ‘Voodoo Drums’, featuring the drum rhythms used to bring about spirit possession struck a striking chord with listeners, and amazingly went on to become one of their best-selling albums.

"I haven't heard anything quite like this; the rhythms are very deeply orchestrated yet it also sounds like improvisation. There are tonalities and textures coming from this album like I've never heard. A great album by Soul Jazz, very well recorded. Some of the sounds I have no idea how they are getting them! This album is bending my ear and setting off the dancing devils in my soul!! Unreal!" Guardian

In 2016 Soul Jazz Records returned to Haiti once more to record a new second volume of the same intense Vodou drumming. Recorded in the capital of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, some 20 years after their first visit, this album also features the very same musicians, the Drummers of the Société Absolument Guinin.

"This record, which consists entirely of recordings of vodou drumming made in Port-Au-Prince, is one of a series of Soul Jazz releases exploring Haitian music, all of which are worth your attention. Nonetheless there's something about the intensity and virtuosity of this particular drums-based album that's particularly transportive. It captures the extraordinary complexity and sophistication of these ceremonial rhythms, which shift, interlock and switch angle of attack with a logic that's near-indecipherable as a listener unable to see visually how they unfold.

These drum rituals are central to Haitian vodou, their power to awe and mesmerise isn't dimmed through being relatively unfamiliar with the traditions that underlie them; these recordings are dynamic and riveting in their intricacy and power." Quietus

Like the first album, these new recordings somehow manage to walk the line between serious ethnological authenticity and a connection with the energy and intensity of the dance rhythms of techno and house music that make them quite unique:

"Soul Jazz yet again come correct with the roots and culture. This amazing set of ritual breakbeats Haitian style has to be the most phenomenal, left field battle breaks album you could imagine. The rhythms used cause spirits to manifest themselves in the physical world, all powerful, some benevolent, others less so. Enjoyable and really quite mind expanding, this is recommended to anyone who thinks traditional music is not for them. Really unparallelled, both in terms of quality and the competition." Boomkat

This album is released worldwide on heavyweight double LP + download code, deluxe CD and digital.

The Skatalites
Independence Ska and The Far East Sound - Original Ska Sounds From The Skatalites 1963 - 65

Fantastic new collection of rare and classic killer ska from the legendary Skatalites, one of the most important groups in the history of Reggae.

This album was first released only as a limited-edition collectors 7-inch box set (now deleted) and is now available for the first time as a double LP edition (+ Download Code), CD and digital release - complete with 10 extra bonus tracks and new extensive sleeve notes!

The Skatalites brought the sound of Jamaica to the world. At the start of the 1960s, in the space of just a couple of years Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo, Ernest Ranglin, Johnny ‘Dizzy’ Moore, Lloyd Knibbs, Lloyd Brevett and others defined the exciting beat of ‘Ska’ as the sound of newly independent Jamaica.

As the house band at Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd’s newly launched Studio One Records at 13 Brentford Road, the group comprising the finest jazz musicians on the island played on literally 1000s of recordings – Bob Marley and The Wailers, Toots and The Maytals, Delroy Wilson, Ken Boothe, Alton Ellis and many, many more.

During their existence (1963-65) The Skatalites also recorded 100s of their own songs, released either under their own name, or The Studio One Orchestra, or that of band members Drummond, McCook etc. This is the first collection on Soul Jazz Records to bring you some of their finest material – from classics such as ‘Guns of Navarone’, ‘El Pussy Cat Ska’, ‘Christine Keeler’ through to some serious rarities such as Dizzy Johnny and The Studio One Orchestra’s ‘Sudden Destruction’ and Don Drummond’s ‘Coolie Boy’.

The Skatalites’ ska sound brought together aspects of jazz, latin, rhythm and blues, proto-Rastafarianism (tracks such as ‘Full Dread’, ‘Beardsman Ska’) and more. The intensity and energy of their sound was matched by the experimentation of the troubled genius of Don Drummond whose ‘far east’ modal trombone sound added a complex melancholy to the music of the Skatalites (the group split-up after Drummond was charged with murdering his wife, dancer Margarita Mahfood).

CAN

THE SINGLES OUT JUNE 16

LISTEN TO RARE TRACK
"SHIKAKO MARU TEN"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNnilECnMpw&feature=youtu.be

CAN The Singles - a collection of all of the band’s single releases - is out June 16 on triple vinyl, download, CD and streaming services.

“Shikako Maru Ten” was the B-side to “Spoon,” which was a Top 10 hit in Germany in 1972. The singles on this compilation are all presented in their original 7” version and “Shikako Maru Ten,” which never appeared on a studio album, is available here for the first time on vinyl outside its original release.

This unique document is the first time the singles have been presented together and shows the breadth of CAN’s influential career, from well-loved tracks like “Halleluwah,” “Vitamin C” and “I Want More” to more obscure singles such as “Silent Night” and "Turtles Have Short Legs". Preorder The Singles HERE.

The Barbican in London recently hosted a very special event to mark CAN’s 50th anniversary year: Irmin Schmidt conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, presenting the world premiere of an original orchestral work composed by Schmidt and Gregor Schwellenbach called CAN Dialog while a specially curated supergroup brought together by Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore and featuring CAN’s first singer Malcolm Mooney performed a set of CAN tracks, including “She Brings The Rain,” “Yoo Doo Right” and “Mother Sky.”

CAN, founded in 1967, released their debut album Monster Movie (1969) which set them apart from the mainstream, carving out a sound that transcended the boundaries of experimental electronic, jazz and modern classical music. CAN’s influence extends from post-punk musicians such as Joy Division and Primal Scream, through avant-garde composers including Bernhard Lang and Radiohead. Schmidt himself began his musical career as a pupil of Stockhausen and Ligeti, and conducted numerous high-profile orchestras in his native Germany and abroad. Hearing the sounds of Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa in the ‘60s led to the formation of CAN but Schmidt never lost touch with his avant-garde classical upbringing, and it is to Schmidt that CAN owed much of its musical eclecticism.

In spring 2018, Faber & Faber will publish a new book devoted to CAN titled All Gates Open. The special edition will come in two volumes: one will be the first complete, authorized biography of the band written by Rob Young and the second, CAN Kiosk by Irmin Schmidt, is a collage of thoughts, visuals and interviews (interviews collated by Max Dax and Robert Defcon).
