I don't know if any bar or entity deserves a 5 star review but I've been to way too many bars and this one is...at a minimum, just way better than most others.

It's like that infamous Pitchfork review that described CYHSY as like every other cool-sounding indie rock band except a lot better -- yeah, that's kind of Monty.

a pitchfork review referenced in a yelp comment is causing me actual physical pain

No way that Yelp review wasn't written by an ILMer

I wavered over whether to post this to this thread or "Free Speech and Creepy Liberalism" and chose the other

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 14:26 (six years ago) link

I really find it depressing on some deep level that someone in a position of educational leadership posted those reviews

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 14:27 (six years ago) link

It's not just that they insult poor people, though they do, it's that they're so. fucking. stupid.

fwiw it looks like her position is more like a director of res life and student affairs than it is an academic decanal position

adam, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 14:28 (six years ago) link

i'm lolling at the fact that she decided to publicize her status as an 'elite yelper' in a college-wide email blast

how many asian 'june C.'s could there be in new haven??

i'm lolling at the fact that she decided to publicize her status as an 'elite yelper' in a college-wide email blast

it's true, this is possibly even more embarrassing than the posts themselves

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 14:47 (six years ago) link

I mean she either thought nobody would look at her reviews, or that people would look and think "wow, those are some good-ass reviews"

lol

mh, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 14:47 (six years ago) link

fwiw it looks like her position is more like a director of res life and student affairs than it is an academic decanal position

That makes it even worse, somehow -- her job is to be a mentor and guide for students, some of whom and some of whose parents are the kind of people she feels free to crap on for Yelp likes

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 14:48 (six years ago) link

yeah i meant more like she's a dumbass administrator and not like some storied comp lit professor in a tweed jacket, which definitely makes it less funny

adam, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 14:55 (six years ago) link

I think it's kind of funny that she thought these reviews would go over well and she has a Ph.D. in social psychology!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 14:57 (six years ago) link

Can't speak for Yale but analogous positions at Harvard are held by professors; I assume she is one as well.

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 15:10 (six years ago) link

No it seems different; as far as I can tell she's not a professor at Yale. (She has a master's degree from Harvard, though! I'm sure Yale is telling itself that's the problem.)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 15:14 (six years ago) link

ah I was equating "dean" to "house master"; it looks like it's actually more like "senior tutor"

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 15:18 (six years ago) link

each residential college also has a 'master' (I believe they're changing that now because it sounds bad)

, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 16:37 (six years ago) link

changing it to "maester"

nomar, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 16:41 (six years ago) link

Yelp kinda feels like a thing that's circling the drain in terms of cultishness maybe? it still exists as a repository for reviews but i feel like that whole elite shit peaked half a decade ago. maybe i'm wrong, i haven't done a deep dive on yelp in a long time.

nomar, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 16:43 (six years ago) link

It remains a useful first pass if you're in an unfamiliar place and hungry and want to know "which of the things I can see from here are awful?"

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 16:48 (six years ago) link

".. because that's where I'm going! Fuck you, tastebuds!"

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 16:53 (six years ago) link

recently came to the realization that 'yelp' is both a pun on 'help' and 'yellowpages'

, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 16:53 (six years ago) link

pun or portmanteau?

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 16:54 (six years ago) link

we should start a review site called Hello!pages which reviews places based on whether or not the employees greet you with a "Hello!" or not, grading them also on tone and sincerity, whether or not they make eye contact, etc.

nomar, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 16:58 (six years ago) link

Cheesecake Factory - Sherman Oaks, CA

Upon entry, the hostess looked up and smiled. She walked around towards our party of three and asked, "How many?" I was taken aback, having expected to be greeted with a "Hello" first. "Hello," I replied sarcastically. "Three."

Why not say hello first? Why ask how many when there are only three? Very confusing.

2 stars for the friendly albeit possibly forced smile.

She keeps going out to dinner with these large parties!

how's life, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 20:12 (six years ago) link

That doesn't seem all that far-fetched to me, tbh. Unless it's an anniversary or Valentine's Day date, my wife and I tend to do dinner with at least 3 other people when we go out, if not more. (We had two separate standing groups of 7 ppl who would do regular dinner dates every other month before we had kids.)

yeah, but how do you split the bill when some friends are archaeologists and others are struggling ex soap stars?

Sufjan Grafton, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 20:36 (six years ago) link

everyone throws in a card and pays an equal share; it all evens out the more often you go out together and if someone buys something egregiously expensive, they should have the grace to say "1/3 of this bill is me so I'll cover that and you all split the rest"

PJD PDJ DPJ (DJP), Wednesday, 17 May 2017 20:39 (six years ago) link
