Was hoping more details about the Purple Rain reissue would be announced Friday until I saw that Marketwatch article.

Warner, which released Prince’s first 18 albums containing most of the hits, signed another record deal with Prince in 2014 that secured its ownership of all of those albums in perpetuity overseas, while giving it the right to block future releases from Prince’s storied vault—the centerpiece of Universal’s deal—if the tunes were recorded while he was under contract with Warner.

surprised Prince went for this deal after all the acrimony for all those years

Yeah, but maybe there were new people who made it worth his while to come back. Hell, even John Fogerty re-signed with Fantasy in 2005 (after everyone who was responsible for his shitty deal were no longer with the label or dead).

Variety is running with the track listing story as well, saying that this Violet Reality person tracked down the ISRC codes (the 12 digit codes used to ID songs for iTunes, YouTube, and everywhere else).

This comes out and I'm totally buying it, but several of the songs on the original album were longer in the movie - I think "The Beautiful Ones," "Baby I'm A Star," maybe one other. Why on earth wouldn't they include the unedited movie versions in the reissue? And why not also throw in the Time songs that were in the movie and (on Ice Cream Castles) but not on the soundtrack?

Futuristic Bow Wow (thewufs), Thursday, 20 April 2017 01:35 (six years ago) link

If this is true, I'm bummed the longer "Beautiful Ones" isn't on the tracklist.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Thursday, 20 April 2017 13:45 (six years ago) link

It'd be kind of neat if they had included some of Michel Colombier's original score, but that's more of a 'we got five discs to fill up' kind of item.

I really wish we could have the weird sex music he has playing on his stereo when apollonia comes over to his pad.

Stereogum ranked his albums. Lots of highly questionable choices (Batman > 1999??!), but at least it's interesting.

Watching the video of that show with him singing the version of "Purple Rain" that ended up on the album was mind-blowing.

Haven't given this much thought, but is "Purple Rain" the most famous and successful song of the rock era originally recorded and released as a take from a live show?

Um, a certain Chuck Berry number one hit comes to mind, don't know how famous it is nowadays though.

LOS ANGELES (April 28, 2017) - NPG Records and Warner Bros. Records announce the 2017 release of Prince's Academy Award® and GRAMMY Award®-winning, RIAA diamond-certified masterpiece Purple Rain in new Deluxe and Deluxe - Expanded Edition formats on June 23, 2017.

A special fan pre-order goes live on Friday, April 28 and unlocks an instant grat download of the previously unreleased "Electric Intercourse." Recorded in 1983 and heard only in its live incarnations, this marks the very first time fans will experience the studio version of this song.

The two-CD Purple Rain Deluxe set includes the official 2015 Paisley Park Remaster of the original tapes from the soundtrack, presenting an unheard vision of the album overseen by Prince himself. The From The Vault & Unreleased disc boasts eleven gems unearthed from the heart of Prince's storied vault. Beyond "Electric Intercourse," the tracklist features much sought-after rarities such as 1984's "Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden," the 1983 instrumental "Father's Song" and more.

Six tracks that have never been released or distributed in the collector or bootleg community include: "Possessed" - the '83 Prince solo version, never heard before; "Electric Intercourse"- the studio version not known to exist before it was discovered at Paisley Park; "Father's Song" - a full, five plus minute version that prior to this fans could only find a minute and half snippet of in the movie; "We Can Fuck" - a track that has never circulated as the full, 10 minute version with these lyrics; and "Katrina's Paper Dolls" - a finished master of the song, which has previously only circulated as a demo. Additionally, all of the material is taken from the source and mastered by Bernie Grundman, the mastering engineer who worked on the original album.

In addition to the Original Album (2015 Paisley Park Remaster)and From The Vault & Unreleased, the Purple Rain Deluxe - Expanded Edition presents a third disc of Single Edits & B-Sides, as well as the concert DVD Prince And The Revolution Live at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY, March 30, 1985.
