Finally ditched my seven year old iPhone 4 for an Android one.

What's the best App for scrobbling from my phone? (Reviews of the official Last.fm make it seem a bit rubbish)

groovypanda, Thursday, 13 April 2017 08:41 (seven years ago) link

Simple Last.fm Scrobbler

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 13 April 2017 12:21 (seven years ago) link

has anyone found a good recommendation service?
last.fm used to have a fairly robust recommendation feature that recommended artists by genre which I loved.
spotify leaves me cold.

campreverb, Saturday, 15 April 2017 02:26 (seven years ago) link

Really? Spotify's "related artists" feature is easy to go rabbit holing in for long periods of time.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 15 April 2017 02:31 (seven years ago) link

I was kind of looking to short-circuit the rabbit hole process.

campreverb, Saturday, 15 April 2017 04:26 (seven years ago) link

one month passes...

Welp, finally deleted the Scrobbler yesterday.

Austin, Thursday, 8 June 2017 15:18 (six years ago) link

no more scrobbling for you?

ogmor, Thursday, 8 June 2017 15:29 (six years ago) link

they have a new LastFM app but you have to manually submit your scrobbles. Everyone hates it.

Dominique, Thursday, 8 June 2017 15:32 (six years ago) link

My scrobbler's still working automatically? (v 2.1.37)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 8 June 2017 15:56 (six years ago) link

the old one still works, but supposedly not with future OS updates

I got rid of it to prepare for the suck days

Dominique, Thursday, 8 June 2017 15:59 (six years ago) link

Last.fm used to have a really deep/useful recommendations feature - it's a shame even that is reportedly a huge pile of suck now.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Thursday, 8 June 2017 16:06 (six years ago) link

Aren't there loads of scrobbling apps in any case?

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 June 2017 16:14 (six years ago) link

I just don't care about the stats like I used to. In the past, I really wanted to be able to see an accurate reflection of my listening. Anymore, it's just not important to me at all. The Scrobbler has been installed and running on my computer since whenever I first started using it (seven, eight years ago?), but I couldn't tell you when the last time I actually visited the site was. Well over a year ago. Probably a lot longer.

Austin, Thursday, 8 June 2017 16:45 (six years ago) link

last.fm have a habit of inexplicably getting rid of old features and bringing them back three years after the majority of users have stopped giving a fuck

PaulTMA, Thursday, 8 June 2017 16:46 (six years ago) link

Same for me Austin. Ten, twelve years ago last.fm was one of the coolest musical places on the internet. Loads of interaction, new finds etc. The beginning of their downfall was CBS buying the site in 2007 imo. I had a paid account until that time, but after the takeover, in 2009, they started charging for radio too. That was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Haven't been on the site for ages until clicking your profile today :) (very high compatibility between us iirc) I have the scrobbler and spotify also set to record what I play, but I never look at the site tbh.

three months pass...

with iTunes 12.7, LastFM scrobbler no longer works, so I've officially joined the alternate scrobbler side (scrubbler).

Dominique, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 13:21 (six years ago) link

Oh, people are still using this!

Guilty.

it's helpful when you don't remember a detail of an album or track you liked, i def don't use for the streams or reccomendations anymore

global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 18:45 (six years ago) link

I only use to track what I've listened to, and what my friends listen to. tbh I wish all my friends were on it!

Dominique, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 19:32 (six years ago) link

I'll add ya, buddy

frogbs, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 19:33 (six years ago) link

awesome

Dominique, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 19:52 (six years ago) link

The recommendations was the best thing about it, IMO.

more Allegro-like (Turrican), Saturday, 23 September 2017 10:29 (six years ago) link

Ya

Also the scrobbling

brimstead, Saturday, 23 September 2017 19:29 (six years ago) link

two years pass...

Stopped scrobbling from Spotify for me. Looking in settings can’t see it under social. I see on Twitter a few others are having the same issue. Same issue on both IOS and Android.

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 08:02 (four years ago) link

same, that's basically its entire function thus why I stopped using it -- in addition to having accidentally deleted all of my music from 2005 to 2018.

very avant-garde (Variablearea), Wednesday, 4 March 2020 14:40 (four years ago) link

No issues here (from the spotify web player)

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 14:41 (four years ago) link

I went to last.fm > settings > applications and disconnected and reconnected the spotify scrobbler and it's working now

ogmor, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 14:42 (four years ago) link

Yeah, done the same and seems ok now.

Dan Worsley, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 16:36 (four years ago) link

it hasn't scrobbled from iTunes for years now, is that true for anyone else?

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 20:18 (four years ago) link

I've been using Neptunes for years and it still scrobbling along...
https://micropixels.software/neptunes

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 4 March 2020 20:24 (four years ago) link

For ITunes, mine was down for a while but I updated the scrobbler app and it’s fine again.

three weeks pass...

As someone in his thirties, I find scrobbling a lonely endeavour these days. All the real-life acquaintances I had friended on Last.fm 10–15 years ago no longer scrobble due to changes in how they listen to music, or they got married and started families which dampened their time and interest in seeking out new music. I feel like the last living member of a tribe.

Looking around to see if strangers out there share my tastes is no longer rewarding: apparently challenged by the sheer bulk of music available to anyone nowadays, which means two people’s listening is even less likely to overlap than before, Last.fm has changed its compatibility algorithm. The way Last.fm tries to drive up website engagement by being too optimistic feels slimy and dishonest: now I’m seeing “Your compatibility with X is Super” even when we just share a small handful of common artists, and they aren’t even close to my most-listened artists.

Melomane, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 21:17 (four years ago) link

it's all true but I love it. so much hot listening data! a last.fm revival wld be good, tho I am used to music being a lonely/online endeavour

ogmor, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 21:20 (four years ago) link

I agree with both of these takes. Last.fm still feels like a superpower I wished was available when I was ten, and every time this thread gets bumped I'm terrified it's going to go away. It would be so lovely if someone gave it a revamp though...so much of that wonderful data is languishing inside the clunkiest interface.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 21:44 (four years ago) link

erstwhile ilx0rs like electricsound and stevem are still listening to 1000 tracks a week -- helps me maintain faith

mookieproof, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 21:56 (four years ago) link

Been Scrobbling for nearly 15 years and still have no idea why I like it

PaulTMA, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 22:23 (four years ago) link

Yeah. Big fan too. Can we do more ourselves as a community?

kraudive, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 22:54 (four years ago) link

would be cool, im still scrobblin away

devvvine, Wednesday, 25 March 2020 23:01 (four years ago) link

Still scrobbling here too. 16 years' of data

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 26 March 2020 03:16 (four years ago) link

Mostly listen to vinyl at home, but still scrobbling strong at work and on the go.

Times have changes a lot since '07...
I still discover new stuff via a handful of fellow listeners I trust.

cooldix, Thursday, 26 March 2020 04:18 (four years ago) link

It definitely seems more of a personal thing rather than a community one now. My last shoutbox messages were almost 9 years ago :(

groovypanda, Thursday, 26 March 2020 07:53 (four years ago) link

for some reason, last.fm still thinks i'm a subscriber/pro user even though I haven't paid them anything in four years, and for that I am grateful.

Roz, Thursday, 26 March 2020 08:24 (four years ago) link

Nice.

What does being a subscriber get you - more analysis/stats?

groovypanda, Thursday, 26 March 2020 08:39 (four years ago) link

yep though I hardly use them - monthly charts, historical charts, library images etc. But I appreciate the no-ads browsing.

Back in the day, I used to subscribe for their radio streaming service but spotify pretty much killed it off so it wasn't really worth it anymore.

Roz, Thursday, 26 March 2020 08:50 (four years ago) link

I still check mine fairly often without really knowing why. I've been on there 12 years.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:11 (four years ago) link

Who am I kidding, I LOVE knowing my stats. And haven't once played a record and queued it up on Spotify so it won't be missing from my data. Nope.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Thursday, 26 March 2020 09:13 (four years ago) link

Haha. That's a dark secret but yep.
