I remember the period he was all googly about Rachel Getting Married. He controlled himself better here than I'd expected.

So far behind because MM annoys me so much but gotta catch up on these
Walter Hill
Mark Lanegan and Tiny Jangly Magical Hat Man (Mac Demarco)
Mark Mothersbaugh
John Michael Higgins & Maria Bamford

I learnt that Mac DeMarco is not a frat rapper from that WTF episode

Kim Deal is amazing, hey that's not news but still. she sounds like Ruby Wax too. the stuff about Albini is great.

surprised this thread hadn't been updated much lately.

I'm scared to listen to the Kim Deal ep. Maron + woman who is a musician is a scary combo.

seemed like it was mostly "Do you remember this Boston thing? I do too!"

^ yep, it was like 89% this, and then Marc repeatedly calling the Last Splash line up the original.

also attempts to remember Boston things that neither actually could

I wonder how this show is doing. My own habit is listening as an afterthought. Have to wonder if things like the Apple Podcast / iTunes redesign hurt the show, with it coming up less front-and-center in my feed the way it used to twice a week.

Looks like hes run out of interesting people to talk to lately tbh

I wouldn't say that. Plenty of recent guests have been great (Rita Moreno, Macauley Culkin, Laurie Metcalf, Derek Waters, Ta-Nehisi Coates). I still listen to it first thing every Monday and Thursday.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 13 February 2018 18:32 (six years ago) link

I haven't listened to the podcast in ages, but now he stares out at me from my TV whenever the Netflix G.L.O.W.screensaver pops up.

I abandoned WTF for a long time but have been coming back to it since a lot of the podcasts I like are on hiatus or releasing sporadically lately. After listening to a lot of shows with a WTF-inspired format, it's nice to return and remember "oh right, he is actually good at this." Enjoyed the Culkin one, Duncan Jones, Greta Gerwig, still need to listen to Ta-Nehisi and some of the other recent ones.

Bill Janovitz was a good one today, though he was way more into talking about his writing on the Stones than his own band.

Which reminds me, I can't remember the last time I listened to Buffalo Tom. Will rectify shortly.

The recent interview with Neal Brennan is really good, they dig into some deep stuff together. One of my favorite conversations of recent memory imo. (Am already a fan of Brennan’s tho...it might not be so great if you don’t like him)

Some really interesting stuff in the Duff McKagan interview:

did anyone listen to the Letterman ep?

it was okay

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Monday, 3 June 2019 21:38 (four years ago) link

felt like Letterman was up for getting more involved and detailed in either of their lives and feelings and motivations but Maron wasn't attuned to that

I got excited for a few seconds when Maron brought up his Leno interview, thinking he was going to say he realised after it posted that he got totally snowed by a sociopath, and they'd bond and it'd bring out war stories from Letterman, but no

quelle sprocket damage (sic), Monday, 3 June 2019 21:41 (four years ago) link

I thought it would be a much better interview. Maron went on to the usual boring inside baseball Mitzy and the Comedy Store stuff. I actually fell asleep listening to it.

marc needs to stop saying ginseng the way that he says it in whatever ads

Cecil replies to your e-mails (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 3 June 2019 23:48 (four years ago) link

Hearing about letterman's dad was super interesting, wish wish it had lasted longer before Marc's brain switched off and he started reciting the names of random comedians that he vaguely knew so that letterman could say that yes, that person was a comedian that he also vaguely remembers.

These days I maybe listen to 1 out of every 20 episodes, I truly don't know if I can hear Marc talk about how the comedy store had a "weird energy" one more single time. Is there any way for someone to write some kind of script that auto-deletes new episodes if it detects the word "Mitzi"?

One Eye Open, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 04:00 (four years ago) link

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 04:32 (four years ago) link

marc needs to stop saying ginseng the way that he says it in whatever ads

lol I kind of like that.

Today he admitted that he and Sarah the Painter broke up a short while ago. I knew his energy had been different lately, but 10 years ago he'd have been standing on the ledge of a building, so that's improvement!

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 04:34 (four years ago) link

Listened to a few episodes this weekend for the first time in months. Really enjoying both Letterman and John Turturro, both of whom talked a lot about specific ways their parents shaped them.

Perry Farrell, on the other hand, is unbearable.

... (Eazy), Monday, 10 June 2019 17:21 (four years ago) link

that was kind of a given imo :)

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 10 June 2019 17:23 (four years ago) link

Yeah, it was the worst of L.A. encapsulated in a single conversation.

... (Eazy), Monday, 10 June 2019 17:37 (four years ago) link

Yeah, listening to Perry talk about his first "feeling up" experiences made this the first WTF in a loooong time I've bailed on.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 10 June 2019 17:39 (four years ago) link

I dipped back in for the first time in awhile. Enjoyed Anjelica Huston, Letterman, and Lisa Kudrow, Timothy Olyphant was disappointingly boring (way too much on growing up and rock bands and not enough Deadwood), and I know better than to listen to Perry Farrell.

Should I listen to the Colbert ep? I've totally cooled on SC to be honest but if it's interesting/if he talks about Strangers W/Candy I might be down.

It was a pretty surface level talk. If you've ever heard him talk about his faith, family tragedy, and start in Chicago, then you can skip it.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 28 June 2019 12:21 (four years ago) link

I enjoyed it but it's more about his family and faith than career.

The Steve Sweeney one was good too. Started listening to the eve ensler one and while it's fascinating, talking about such heavy levels of abuse, I had to stop halfway through and think I'll pick it up again later.

I feel like wtf has been a lot better recently*. Like maron has mellowed a bit and it makes him a better interviewer.

*I think I stopped listening about 2 years back and only came back to it about a month ago
