Anyway I like this song.

What's his beef with Big Sean? He seems like a guy who can be safely ignored (by Kendrick, but also by me)

I like the song, wonder if it's a little bit of a headfake in the vein of "i" -- leading with a straightforward track and following with a more complex album.

Yeah, I like this but I'm not bowled over by it.

Tim F, Saturday, 1 April 2017 21:07 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, deej is right. Kendrick doesn't really do club songs but when thevibe is right, Allright will tear down any venue. This tries to do something with that same energy. I haven't heard it out yet but I predict it could be huge.

The U2 thing is apparently not a sample, but a track he sat down and co-wrote with them. Urgh.

That's a really, really bad sign for this record.

I don't like "Humble" much – some of the rhymes sound second-tier to me and his flow awkward.

was telling my wife the other night that career-wise, I think Kendrick Lamar needs a huge hit with his next record. Guessing the U2 collab is efforts towards that. Somehow.

Dominique, Friday, 7 April 2017 14:35 (seven years ago) link

I would have guessed the G. Kurstin credit on track ten would be his effort towards a huge hit.

he just sold 277K of untitled, unmastered which is more than a lot of rappers with hit singles sell and that's just an odds and sods comp

not really meaning in terms of sales alone, but breaking through into the next level of pop stardom a la Kanye, Adele, superbowl halftime, popular culture awareness stuff. ie the level at which my mom can hum a Kendrick Lamar tune from memory

"Bennie & the Jets" was a hit on R&B radio in the early '70s, which helps.

but yes, reasonable point. U2 has not yet done a live collab with eminem tho so i call a draw.

I like the song, wonder if it's a little bit of a headfake in the vein of "i" -- leading with a straightforward track and following with a more complex album.

I think To Pimp a Butterfly is kind of closed chapter. That album was such a socially important statement that you can't really follow it up with anything being even remotely that momentous. TPAB was literally forcing you to immediately recognize it as a classic from the very first day it came out. But what I like about Kendrick's career is that he always recognized the position he was in and knew what to do - after GKMC he knew he had the audience and authority to make To Pimp a Butterfly. Right now he recognizes he's the guy who made TPAB and he can literally do and call out whoever the fuck he wants because basically everything he says from now on is treated like a manifesto. I mean HUMBLE sounds like he's coming back to put rappers who thought he's about different stuff in their place again. His bragging is just hilariously otherworldly, I mean he plays on this religious, messianistic imagery where he is a god and leaves you wondering how the fuck do I even answer to that. Obviously, that's not a thing I would like to hear a whole album about but I am not really worried about Kendrick coming up with some interesting stuff.

piramjida, Friday, 7 April 2017 17:41 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, that's kinda my feeling, that To Pimp a Butterfly was such a burst of creativity that I'd be very surprised if he followed it up with something more "complex" (for want of a better term) ... I'm very interested in where he goes from here, of course, but I'll be very surprised if the new record goes above and beyond what he's done so far.

(I am expecting it to be good, though)

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 7 April 2017 19:06 (seven years ago) link

damn. is really the proper follow-up to TPAB and the release of “humble” was way more of an event in the immediate than either of the two singles that preceded TPAB. (it also only preceded its associated album by two weeks, so momentum was huge)

xp interesting article

not sure if this is because "its true size is being more accurately measured" or because it's growing in size?

that is, if streaming is driving "sales" and young people stream more than old people and young people prefer contemporary genres (not rock) then this would make hip hop bigger, wouldn't make it retroactively bigger tho (unless the argument is that urban genres were always bigger but didn't have sales to match because they were either radio or DJ genres or in some other way their popularity was not sales drive)

niels, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 13:36 (six years ago) link

our local station plays the radio version of Element and Loyalty a lot in addition to Humble

this is a chicken & the egg kind of argument. There was very popular rap music that was largely ignored by industry gatekeepers until streaming allowed them to measure it, and once they did measure it & have something verifiable to base decisions on, they proceeded to magnify its popularity further

It sounded great at the halftime show last night, he really amped it up. The whole performance was strong, just him alone on stage totally commanding a huge crowd.

hmm I'm happy for Kendrick but I don't find it a particularly convincing performance, not interested in an mp3 of this...

but then very few concerts on American tv from the past 20 years have made much impression on me, don't know why they all have such bad sound when there are hundreds of radio stations with amazing live recordings (w video footage too!) on youtube
