Neanderthal, Thursday, 30 March 2017 21:26 (seven years ago) link

Schumer's gonna filibuster, GOP won't have the 8 Dem votes needed for cloture, McConnell will invoke "nuclear option" (which I doubt Manchin and Heitkamp will support) and it will pass on party lines, Gorsuch will then get confirmed with 52 votes or thereabouts.

Okay folks, it's fully on now:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/mike-flynn-offers-to-testify-in-exchange-for-immunity-1490912959?mod=e2tw

Mike Flynn, President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser, has told the Federal Bureau of Investigation and congressional officials investigating the Trump campaign’s potential ties to Russia that he is willing to be interviewed in exchange for a grant of immunity from prosecution, according to officials with knowledge of the matter.

As an adviser to Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign, and later one of Mr. Trump’s top aides in the White House, Mr. Flynn was privy to some of the most sensitive foreign-policy deliberations of the new administration and was directly involved in discussions about the possible lifting of sanctions on Russia imposed by the Obama administration.

He has made the offer to the FBI and the House and Senate intelligence committees though his lawyer but has so far found no takers, the officials said.

Mr. Flynn’s attorney, Robert Kelner, declined to comment.

haha oh shit, yeah this seems like a big deal

Οὖτις, Thursday, 30 March 2017 22:51 (seven years ago) link

May be that he's not offering up anything meaningful on other people, so why grant immunity?

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Thursday, 30 March 2017 22:53 (seven years ago) link

why would he need immunity? i didn't expect him to get charged with anything.

Treeship, Thursday, 30 March 2017 22:55 (seven years ago) link

As the voice of miserable pessimism, it just means he thinks he might have done something illegal - which could be lying about or failing to disclose payments from RT or Turkey in his security clearance application. It doesn't mean he has flipped on Trump - particularly if nobody is willing to take up the offer.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Thursday, 30 March 2017 22:55 (seven years ago) link

SV is right but a Trump guy breaking the law and getting caught w/in the first few months (weeks?!) of the administration is at the very least a black mark on WH (and one that apparently refuses to go away)

Οὖτις, Thursday, 30 March 2017 22:59 (seven years ago) link

Maybe all along, the leaker was....Hillary.

she had seen that she'd be taking office with a divided Congress, united against her, even her own party in some ways. she knew she'd be ineffective.

Why not tear the Republicans apart from the inside by letting him win, and then framing him for an espionage campaign that all but sinks the Republican party for eternity? All along, she had us all where she wanted us.

my alternate theory is that lizard people did it.

Flynn needs to be careful about standing too close to any open windows

Moodles, Thursday, 30 March 2017 23:02 (seven years ago) link

xxpost that's the thing really is the whole "Paterno" scenario. obv he became more directly implicated as that story developed further but in the earlygoing, he was seen more was the guy that "didn't do enough" when made aware of something and held accountable for what happened under him.

President appointing a guy who is about to be indicted to National SEcurity is as bad a headline as you could ask for.

could Trump's admin even get that right at this point?

wouldn't be half surprised to see a processional of Trump goons tricked one by one into falling out a window to their demise while Flynn sits idly by and laughs

failing to register as a foreign agent of turkey - illegal, regardless of their ham fisted ex post facto registration
taking payments from a foreign power while being retired military - also illegal

I cant see how his testimony would relate to that but hey, give him points for trying

Trump's primary threat tactic is p funny - w his approval ratings in the tank, who does he think is gonna run in a year out of sheer loyalty to Trump, rather than loyalty to a particular ideology or actual constituents. Like are there *really* that many available candidates out there who are just "idgaf what he does, I will support him on anything no matter what"?

Trump doesn't get that his legislative support is predicated on his being a vehicle for *their* priorities, not vice versa

Neanderthal, Thursday, 30 March 2017 23:22 (seven years ago) link

Fuck, these people are hopeless.

Two days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order rolling back Barack Obama’s Climate Action Plan, easing fracking restrictions and reversing the previous administration’s efforts to shrink America’s carbon footprint, the Environmental Protection Agency sent out a press release intended to congratulate the president for his bold leadership. The agency included quotes from groups like the American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity, the Chamber of Commerce, and the American Petroleum Institute, all of whom heaped praise on Trump. But the e-mail also contained an unexpected message—one attributed to West Virginia Republican senator Shelley Moore Capito, a longtime supporter of the coal industry in her home state.

“President Trump has chosen to recklessly bury his head in the sand,” the quote attributed to Capito read. “Walking away from the Clean Power Plan and other climate initiatives, including critical resiliency projects is not just irresponsible— it's irrational.” It continued: “With the world watching, President Trump and Administrator Pruitt have chosen to shirk our responsibility, disregard clear science and undo the significant progress our country has made to ensure we leave a better, more sustainable planet for generations to come.”

There were three apparent problems with the quote, which was featured prominently atop the E.P.A.’s press release. First, it wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement of Trump’s executive order. Second, the release misspelled the senator’s first name. And third, Capito never actually said any of that. The E.P.A. accidentally attributed the quote to Capito, when it had actually come from Democratic senator Tom Carper of Delaware, the Democrat leading the Environment and Public Works Committee. Oops.

FWIW, Flynn's lawyer has issued a statement saying 'Yeah the committees'....but no word on the FBI. (Yet?)
