internecine republican warfare you say?

But it does indicate that Trump has learned a lesson about the importance of party unity - he's not going to go after the FC caucus guys - he actually managed to reign in his ego in an act of self-preservation, which is unusual.

Just a reminder that 'reigning in his ego' is not a thing he does.

it's a thing that he can do for a maximum of 1 week.

It is entirely "you embarrassed me and I will make you pay." Which, while completely infantile, is a wonderful energy to have unleashed on people whose values I detest; popcorn.gif indeed.

i feel like we haven't seen even a fraction of the petty vindictiveness that trump is capable of, so i'm psyched to see him raise his game against the freedom caucus (and against himself by extension)

tony orlandoni, cheese engineer (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 30 March 2017 14:23 (seven years ago) link

To give you an idea of how much the Freedom Caucus are scared about this:

It didn't take long for the swamp to drain @realDonaldTrump. No shame, Mr. President. Almost everyone succumbs to the D.C. Establishment.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 March 2017 14:25 (seven years ago) link

seems like this is a strong man attempt to get them to fall into line, but given that the FC already defected on healthcare it seems likely to be the case that they don't feel beholden to trump for future electoral success, so this seems like a pretty poor gamble but hey

art, Thursday, 30 March 2017 14:25 (seven years ago) link

Trump is a bully. A bully only has power when others fear him. Once his usual tactics fail, he's nothing but a bloviating half-filled ochre beanbag.

So, yeah, this tactic isn't going to benefit him in any way, but it's all he knows. Godspeed, o POTUS my POTUS.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/30/world/africa/trump-is-said-to-ease-combat-rules-in-somalia-designed-to-protect-civilians.html?_r=0

WASHINGTON — President Trump has relaxed some of the rules for preventing civilian casualties when the American military carries out counterterrorism strikes in Somalia, laying the groundwork for an escalating campaign against Islamist militants in the Horn of Africa.

The decision, according to officials familiar with internal deliberations, gives commanders at the United States Africa Command greater latitude to carry out offensive airstrikes and raids by ground troops against militants with the Qaeda-linked Islamist group Shabab. That sets the stage for an intensified pace of combat there, while increasing the risk that American forces could kill civilians.

from latest PPP poll (which has him at -13%)

We find that if evidence comes out that proves conclusively that members of Trump's campaign team worked in association with Russia to help him win the election, 53% of voters think he should resign to only 39% who believe he should continue to serve as President.

Campaign team vs. guy himself, FWIW.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 30 March 2017 15:00 (seven years ago) link

right, but I mean even though it's an abstract question where voters bring their own presumptions, I would presume if it was found conclusively that his team worked with Russia, there would probably also be evidence corroborating the suspicion that the WH has tried to obfuscate the investigation. for Nixon it was the coverup (and the coverup of the coverup)

Neanderthal, Thursday, 30 March 2017 15:02 (seven years ago) link

Dr. Roy Godson at Senate committee hearing: Russia started investigated interfering in election in 2009; developed platform in 2010, hacking first attempted in 2015, targeted/deployed on public throughout 2016. Also possibly implicated in Brexit vote.

It's unsurprising to me that there are GOPers who wouldn't call for Turnip's resignation if active collusion were proven. The ends justify the means. Who cares how he got there. He's there now and he's totally going to work for us! The cognitive dissonance is strong with this lot.

Rep. Raul Grijalva, who cochairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus with Ellison, agreed, noting that the “extreme posture” of Trump’s policies has riled up the Democratic base to the point that members who work with him run a risk, even if they bring home infrastructure projects.

“That’s got to be a hell of a bridge. I’m talking eight lanes. It better be worth it,” he said.
