'Sugar for the Pill' sounds great. I'm getting quite excited for this now!
― The Roger Waters Experience (Turrican), Thursday, 30 March 2017 01:19 (seven years ago) link
Yeah loving that song already and judging from the new material so far there is indeed is slightly muscular edge to their sound that is quite new. Can't wait

Excited for this album. These tracks rule.

wow, they sound fantastic... maybe I need to fly up to Chicago for their show.
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 3 April 2017 02:23 (seven years ago) link
yeah, I don't really like Sugar Pill all that much. I kinda agree with Pygmalion comparisons but it's also a lot warmer, even poppier which is not a bad thing in itself but overall it sounds really generic, while Pygmalion had some sort of cold vibe which made it really interesting. I wish them all the best, MBV proved that you can come back really strong as a shoegaze band even though this genre is kind of intrinsically nostalgic, that's all fine if they want to evolve their sound, it's just not that great to me.
― piramjida, Wednesday, 5 April 2017 11:05 (seven years ago) link
I don't know if the genre is 'intrinsically nostalgic,' or if it is, you might as well say that about a lot of music in general, whether it's rock or something else. In that there was often a perceived built in sense of retreat/reflection, that's one thing, but when you've got something like three generations of musicians now doing something with the form one way or another, is it nostalgia or extension? (Certainly, as with so much else, a lot of newer stuff simply recreates rather than fuses and inspires in new directions, but again, why hold them to particular account?)
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 April 2017 13:05 (seven years ago) link
I think I'd be down on a band for skewing towards relatively more generic composition but these new songs are hitting me so directly I can't really step back and nitpick.
― Evan, Wednesday, 5 April 2017 13:26 (seven years ago) link
I think "Sugar for the Pill" works in spite of its straightforward composition. The chorus has a haunting touch that hooked me on the first listen and keeps me relistening, but
it's practically Coldplay
is otm
― Vinnie, Wednesday, 5 April 2017 16:44 (seven years ago) link
that's your fault for listening to Coldplay, isn't it

I think the first Mojave 3 album is the best one. Very very gentle and the closing track is very Slowdive.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Monday, 10 April 2017 22:20 (seven years ago) link
"Sugar For The Pill" sounds like it could have come from the Black Hearted Brother album, which I really liked
'Out of Tune' by Mojave 3 has ended up being one of my most loved albums. 'Excuses For Travellers' is also very good and the others have their moments.
The early Mojave 3 demos, that made up part of the first album were originally sent out under the Slowdive name. I was surprised to read that the first M3 album was released within 10 months of 'Pygmalion', it came together that quickly.
Would love a new Mojave 3 record one day, however I am looking forward to Slowdive too.
― michaellambert, Monday, 10 April 2017 22:26 (seven years ago) link
xp i agree, it has a very different feel from the others. it's like slowcore. very atmospheric, great lead guitar tones
― a but (brimstead), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 01:08 (seven years ago) link
wow i didn't know this! will definitely have to dig into to m3

Sugar is something very specialAnd fuck the Coldplay comment because SD are 20 years older than them and experience counts for something
― calstars, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 02:52 (seven years ago) link
the first four mojave 3 albums are all great, I didn't care for the last one
― akm, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 03:31 (seven years ago) link
Out of Tune was the first one I bought. Still listen to it the most though Ask Me Tomorrow is close behind.
― that's not my post, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 05:10 (seven years ago) link
These new songs are great.
― Sam Weller, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 10:41 (seven years ago) link
I wasn't really sold on the singles but this album is great, it's a nice midpoint between Souvlaki and Pygmalion. highlights are probably "Go Get It" and "Don't Know Why"
― ufo, Wednesday, 19 April 2017 09:31 (seven years ago) link
Jealous of you guys hearing the album already! I can't wait

Rachel is going to be on KEXP tomorrow morning (John in the Morning show is doing an all shoegaze program 6-10 Pacific) if anyone has any interest.
― van smack, Thursday, 20 April 2017 01:21 (seven years ago) link
So far, spectacular. No new ground broken here but as shoegaze records go by reformed bands go, it'll probably beat your expectations.

"Sugar For The Pill" is a gorgeous track
― Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Friday, 21 April 2017 21:19 (seven years ago) link
seeing them tomorrow! at a gorgeous newly renovated old 1920s theater with what's supposed to be an amazing sound system. saw them last time at the worst venue in mpls so i'm pretty stoked

Remix of "Sugar For the Pill" by Avalon Emerson -- not bad

― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 2 May 2017 14:36 (seven years ago) link
Went to the show last night, no better or worse than the one I saw in 2014 (at the "worst venue in mpls"). Old hollowed out theater made for cool atmosphere, the sound was fine, and yet... my favorite of the reunited shoegaze bands I've seen is the one I've had the most trouble connecting with live. Just me?
― geoffreyess, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 21:36 (seven years ago) link
cmon the fine line is pretty bad you have to admit
― global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 3 May 2017 21:40 (seven years ago) link
The quotes weren't meant to suggest I was questioning your judgment. I used to hate that place (for blasting Muse right before a Deerhunter set, and other crimes) but I've been to a lot of great shows there in the past few years.

'don't know why' is killing me
― del esdichado (NickB), Friday, 5 May 2017 14:11 (seven years ago) link
this is a damn good album. there's nothing as good as Alison, but as a whole it seems to be as good as any of their other albums.
― brotherlovesdub, Friday, 5 May 2017 19:41 (seven years ago) link
not even close imo
― imago, Friday, 5 May 2017 19:53 (seven years ago) link
i don't know how many times i've listened to 'don't know why' today, but it is a lot of fucking times, that is for sure
― del esdichado (NickB), Saturday, 6 May 2017 21:42 (seven years ago) link
i had a very stupid and somewhat embarrasing thought about its structure - it's sort of like the lifecycle of a snowflake:crystals forming on floating dust particles -> sudden blooming as flakes cohere -> the gradual surrender of melting -> final state of liquid non-being

― passionate plant-based athlete (voodoo chili), Saturday, 6 May 2017 22:26 (seven years ago) link
amazing record. I wasn't a huge fan of Slowdive back in the day so I'm comfortable asserting that "Star Roving" is as good as it gets.
― yesca, Sunday, 7 May 2017 03:08 (seven years ago) link
Anybody even partially slagging this off is talking absolute nonsense. This is easily their third best album.
Pretty fantastic stuff.
― Austin, Sunday, 7 May 2017 05:11 (seven years ago) link
i think this is easily better than pygmalion
― passionate plant-based athlete (voodoo chili), Sunday, 7 May 2017 06:46 (seven years ago) link
i think it's their second best, frankly
― austinb, Sunday, 7 May 2017 15:33 (seven years ago) link
i like this fine. I like all their albums in different ways, not so into ranking them.
― akm, Sunday, 7 May 2017 16:26 (seven years ago) link
very good comeback album
― ciderpress, Sunday, 7 May 2017 16:41 (seven years ago) link
This album has grown on me a lot. I'm not sure where I'd rank it right now. It could well be my second favourite. The only song I'm not totally sold on is the last one. The way the, "thinking about love" bit overlaps near the end seems a bit clumsy and grates after a while. Everything up to that point is very enjoyable.
― kitchen person, Sunday, 7 May 2017 17:16 (seven years ago) link
Dammit, I guess I really should hear this!! Is it better than the My Bloody Valentine comeback album?
― Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 7 May 2017 18:14 (seven years ago) link
yes (i didn't like mbv that much)
― austinb, Sunday, 7 May 2017 18:24 (seven years ago) link
Her solo stuff?
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 3 November 2017 13:39 (six years ago) link
She sings for a band called minor victories which as a band isn’t really all that interesting to me but she sings well.
― Keythkeythkeyth, Friday, 3 November 2017 14:39 (six years ago) link
Disagree. The Minor Victories album is really great and worth checking out.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 3 November 2017 16:06 (six years ago) link
I am a big fan of both Twilight Sad and new Slowdive and I thought that Minor Victories album was very predictable and boring
― boxedjoy, Friday, 3 November 2017 22:29 (six years ago) link
Back on tour in the US in a couple of months and playing SF in late May at the Fillmore. That'll be a great show for sure.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 16:52 (six years ago) link
i know, crazy. they're spoiling us!
― akm, Wednesday, 14 March 2018 18:38 (six years ago) link
Quite surprised I couldn't get into this album. I was totally enthralled by "Don't Know Why" but despite enjoying things about them (although I did find some of the riffs a bit plain) the rest of the album just never clicked.
Not getting into the new Slowdive album sounds like a nightmare scenario but I'm dealing with it calmly. I'll give it more spins in a year.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 16 March 2018 21:12 (six years ago) link
Totally with you on "Don't Know Why" being the obvious standout.
― J. Sam, Friday, 16 March 2018 23:11 (six years ago) link
god this album is so good
― com rad erry red flag (f. hazel), Sunday, 17 June 2018 18:52 (five years ago) link
Not seeing this band when they played the Newport Music Hall in Columbus last year just because it was standing room only was a HUGE mistake.
― Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 17 June 2018 20:00 (five years ago) link
saw them last month and it was pretty damn good... but word is they'll be doing lots more touring in the near future.
― com rad erry red flag (f. hazel), Sunday, 17 June 2018 21:09 (five years ago) link
I also saw them last month, and they had lost their guitar pedals in the airport, lol. Slowdive with borrowed guitar pedals they aren't really sure how to use is an intense experience.
― Frederik B, Sunday, 17 June 2018 21:14 (five years ago) link
Listening to this wonderful album today, wondering if there'll be a follow-up. What've the various members been up to the last couple of years?

Rachel's had a side project release with her partner this year.

...which has never been named on ILM: The Soft Cavalry (Rachel and her husband Steve Clarke) is solid but leaves me wanting more of Rachel's voice.
