The guy that used to write for the Chronicle would always tip me off to new records but the paper cut his budget so I just wing it now

very good hardwax take on 24 k magic:

Effective cut-up funk and electro floor-filler.

it seems somewhat unnatural when there's product info in the review, kind of disjoint:

Stunning 2nd chapter of AC travels into puristic, tonal sound synthesis - Highly Recommended! (comes w/ download code)

The new Module Werk record is great, particularly the first track, very assured for a new artist

"Tell us a little about what its like to work with the Hippie Dance crew." is a pretty weird question to ask Superpitcher

This is good

I'm not sure where to put this, a short mix of artist-only selections from a new artist, Neksha. Only one release so far with dj spider which was ok this stuff a lot better

https://soundcloud.com/spinning-plates-records/nekhsa-spinning-plates-mix-vol-1

Hopefully some of this comes out later this year

It would help if i got their name right!

Nekhsa

Some lovely moments on the Mr YT comp "Brand New Day". Mr YT is Japanese producer Yuji Technouchi apparently - not on my radar at all. This is a compilation of ep's that originally came out 97-98. Class.

Plenty of Mr YT on the bobbins of the past thread!

anvil, Tuesday, 4 April 2017 15:22 (seven years ago) link

Ah ok must have missed it. Glad to hear there's been some bobbins recognition.

millmeister, Tuesday, 4 April 2017 15:40 (seven years ago) link

I can't find the Superpitcher thread, but his third 12'' is great as well. This album is shaping up to be a favorite.

Yeah I've loved every Golden Ravedays 12" released so far. Perfect nocturnal listening.

I thought Markus Sommer's record was possibly the best record of last year (other than And.rea's). Nothing else has really touched that but I've got time for his remix on Syntax Society's release

I guess that because both are new, not released till June

saer, Friday, 7 April 2017 07:39 (seven years ago) link

shall we have 3, because this Doublet record is phenomenal, post-deckchair canalside vibes, got a sailors hat on for good luck

Move D, Jonah Sharp, Juju & Jordash announce album as The Mulholland Free Clinic: https://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=38720
Based on their 3 hour performance at a German festival last summer. The snippet of "Vital Signs" sounds fantastic & spacey

willem, Thursday, 13 April 2017 08:15 (seven years ago) link

Monsieur Blue is Mulen presumably? Raresh plays that one a lot, I prefer the other side but its not a buy

Fred and Ed records I liked but not enough to buy, though I'll come back to them probably. Its been a while since a Fred P record really grabbed me though

Ricky Montanari (of Riviera Traxx fame). I don't know if this a long lost track issue for first time or a new recording, but its a new release

First release on Referenz, tracks from Markus Sommer & Phil Evans, Yakine, Avos and Alex Picone

https://soundcloud.com/user-831748201/rfz1-snippets

the MSPE and Yakine tracks are both bucolic treats, MS has been doing great in that number 10 role for a while now

Liking a lot more tracks from this thread this year than I did last year, and trying to figure out why (me? changes in musical trends? changes in who is posting what?), but I'm happy about it. Are the cognoscenti feeling this is an especially good year for house, or not really?

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 24 April 2017 04:28 (six years ago) link

not particularly

the late great, Monday, 24 April 2017 04:44 (six years ago) link

Depends what it is that you like?

I don't think its an especially good year for house records at all! though there have been some stellar mixes which have put a spring in a step and a hope in a heart, but a lot of those records I don't know what they are - they might be old they might be new.

saer, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 09:42 (six years ago) link

A lot of the good records from other years have had more time to emerge from the undergrowth! Not every one is out on the beach waving their ice cones around on day one

saer, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 09:47 (six years ago) link

It could just be that I'm more receptive to it.

I don't feel too confident talking about the finer genre distinctions within house. I know I don't care for most jackin house. I'm sort of UK garage-centric but like a lot of deep house (but that also leaves a lot I don't like).

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 15:56 (six years ago) link

I dont know anything about genre distinctions and never talk about them, I only like records and also feeling genial

saer, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 16:02 (six years ago) link

I'm being somewhat disingenuous - there are a couple of genre distinctions i adhere to. there are miscreants, but not all miscreants are the same, some are proper meat pie and others are more smoking behind the bikesheds. Those share some dna with cabin in the woods records but those have to be used sparingly, same as with canal dredgers - a little goes a long way. Then there are the convivial cap doffers, meadow vibes, you can play them over the tannoy at boundary park still today. and some records are just proper deckchair. Just a matter of time before bank holiday bill and the charnock richard boys turn up. this is what my record bag looks like

generally a mix of deckchair and miscreant is good but dont overthink it or you might miss your stop!

saer, Tuesday, 25 April 2017 16:20 (six years ago) link

That said unfortunately most records are none of these things and are exercises in drudgery or a painful attack on the senses from people who would have been better off bullying children

2017 is good year for House / Techno, this e.p. is pressing my buttons; https://soundcloud.com/blankstatemusic/blank001-phil-evans-qatch-ep

mmmm, Sunday, 30 April 2017 13:19 (six years ago) link

Both recent hits in my town. Having said that there is plenty to avoid! Had the displeasure of seeing Jackmaster at Fabric this morning...

mmmm, Sunday, 30 April 2017 13:23 (six years ago) link

I'm not big on the idea of a year being good or bad for music. Seems like it has everything to do with what you happen to be exposed to, in relation to your tastes, and your tastes in relation to external factors like music discourse and age, and very little to do with the year itself. I realize this is implicit, but I still think it's annoying when people complain about the year when it's like, don't blame the calendar for your inability to find good records.

This is technically 2016, but from the last 12 months. It's a really nice ep: https://soundcloud.com/helena_label/sets/aleks-future-dialect-ep

I like a lot of the stuff coming out of Frankfurt the last couple of years, and while I like Phil Evans is it just me or are his records always out of tune! Does feel like a scene on the upswing though!

Jesus man, what possessed you?

saer, Sunday, 30 April 2017 16:51 (six years ago) link

were you there for Mathew Jonson / Voigtmann?

saer, Sunday, 30 April 2017 16:53 (six years ago) link

What was the issue with Jackmaster at Fabric? Never seen him live but I didn't think he was bad?

This release is my top purchase from April http://www.juno.co.uk/products/blake-baxter-santonio-echols-eddie-fowlkes-four313/639875-01/

(For the perceptibly many of us without the vinyl) is it a generally known thing that Prince of Denmark's "8" is on Spotify and Tidal?

If not, it's there. There there. Both theres.

sombrerodetuned (sombrerodetune), Monday, 1 May 2017 20:25 (six years ago) link

FWIW, "8" sounds like a needle drop on both services.

sombrerodetuned (sombrerodetune), Monday, 1 May 2017 20:47 (six years ago) link

just read there is a new Terrence Dixon album in July. I'm really up for that.

calzino, Monday, 1 May 2017 22:33 (six years ago) link

weirdly it is a concept album of all like 2-3 minute tracks, right?
