Just getting into this now (a little weird to listen to bc I submitted a bunch of beats for it in early stages, but I feel pretty detached from it now)

i also thought there was some good shit on the new devin, and then i listened to "to tha x-treme" and yeah.... it's not the same kind of good shit.

ANU (sisilafami), Friday, 31 March 2017 19:31 (seven years ago) link

it's a different album, more mournful and psychedelic i think
anyway this is great IMO, almost cloud rap vibes in some places

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 31 March 2017 20:39 (seven years ago) link

on first pass a lil disappointed in the cupcakke tape. too many dated tropical house beats

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Friday, 31 March 2017 22:37 (seven years ago) link

i really enjoy the new devin! More psych is right though not as good as x-treme is also right.

devastated was really weak attempt at riding current fads nagl for him at all 1) cuz he wasn't any good at it and 2) it seemed weird to switch lanes when he'd somehow actually had some commercial success w/boom bap throwback. new song w/schoolboy is nice cuz it feels a little bit less like duck down/black moon cosplay and modern but still nyc rappity rappin

really enjoying the album. even devastated makes more sense in sequence. god bless rap records with less than 14-15 songs.

And I said that before I heard him name-check Lemmy and Motorhead on album closer "Winston Red." That kind of thing always makes me smile.

hey everybody I listened to a Joey Bada$$ album

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 15:50 (seven years ago) link

still kinda baffled at how the sonics of late 70s/early 80s dentist office jazz have become so popular w rap producers, these washes of synths w no attack and burbling fender rhodes chord clusters that float around with occasional horn stabs or sax riffs swimming along. I don't dislike it but it did seem like an odd sonic backdrop for like the first half-dozen songs on the album w their angrier/despairing sociopolitical-commentary rhymes. Feel like things start to pick up and cohere around the midway point w Y Don't You Love Me (lol @ "If I Was Your Girlfriend quote, also lol @ Sun Ra dialogue sample in the opening track for that matter), and then Rockabye Baby and Ring the Alarm really pull things together.

Haven't listened to the full album, but "First Day Out" is an amazing song, even if it's a stylistic rip-off of "Dreams & Nightmares."

Loving Tee Grizzly. Marred by a few times when he feels like he has to do an autotune radio singing song, just feels really awkward

But yeah this as someone mentioned upthread seems like he could really step into the space vacated by Meek Mill

Man I don't know if a rapper ever played himself as much as Meek. Feel bad for him

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 21 April 2017 13:10 (six years ago) link

actually Tee Grizzly is a big r'n'b fan, and likes to singsong.

“That singing puts some soul on it,” he says. “It makes it connect a little better. I like that type of music more than rap anyway to be honest with you. I like that old school R&B, it make me feel good.”
