YOU'VE SSHHHHOT ME TO THE CO-AH.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 15 March 2017 21:23 (seven years ago) link

When the chorus kicks in on 'Crystal' it really vibes me up to the point where, right at that moment, I wanna be in the crowd at a New Order show singing along loudly to every word.

Coolio Iglesias (Turrican), Wednesday, 15 March 2017 21:28 (seven years ago) link

two years pass...

This album is great

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 14:27 (four years ago) link

I agree, this is a great album. Someone Like You is the most underrated song in New Order's catalog. Primitive Notion and Vicious Streak are two of the best album tracks they ever did. If they had waited a bit to complete Here to Stay and reworked the tracklist a bit to include some b-sides that crush things like Rock the Shack and Slow Jam, this would be considered by many to be their best album. Instead, it's a solid 5th or so in their catalog.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:03 (four years ago) link

I really like both "Slow Jam" and "Rock the Shack"

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:04 (four years ago) link

In fact, I think it was "Slow Jam" that made me go "you know what, this album rules top to bottom"

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:05 (four years ago) link

I said it before but the Peel session version of “Rock the Shack” really changed my opinion of that song. Really recommend it

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:14 (four years ago) link

Every song on the album is great.

Every single song.

Including "Rock the Shack" and "Turn My Way".

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:15 (four years ago) link

The production has always grated: the guitars sound great, by design no doubt, but whenever Steve Osbourne gets to electronics they sound thick and garish. I prefer the creaminess of Waiting for the Sirens' Call and Music Complete.

Yet no one expected a NO album to sound like this in 2001, and I still remember the thrill when "Crystal" turned out so confident.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:17 (four years ago) link

"Vicious Streak" doesn't sound garish at all to me.

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:18 (four years ago) link

Haha, that's wild. Slow Jam is by a great margin my least favorite New order song, closely followed by the moments Billy Corgan sings on Turn My Way. Well, glad someone likes it. I suppose you also like Stray Dog on Music Complete? That's another one I think further sullies their reputation. If they had released it as an instrumental, it wouldn't have been bad, but Iggy Pop worship made a mockery of both New Order and Underworld in the last few years.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:21 (four years ago) link

"Stray Dog" is eh

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:23 (four years ago) link

My Music Complete jam that everyone else seems to hate is "Unlearn this Hatred"

brigadier pudding (DJP), Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:23 (four years ago) link

Stray Dog is the only one I skip on Music Complete.

brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 17 July 2019 18:32 (four years ago) link

My God, “Rock the Shack” is the perfect andere to that other thread.

I've always liked this album.
I've always loved Rock The Shack. It's fun. Bobby Gillespie's cool.
I've never loved Turn My Way. I've always hated Billy Corgan's vocals. Could never understand why he was invited by New Order and even David Bowie to croak on their works.
(Oh and for the record: Stray Dog is a favourite of mine on Music Complete)

Someone Like You and Crystal are the highlights for me. Run Wild is somewhat ruined by its lyrics.

Valentijn, Thursday, 18 July 2019 09:11 (four years ago) link

It's fun. Bobby Gillespie's cool.
I’ve read more truth in a Trump tweet!

dorsalstop, Thursday, 18 July 2019 09:43 (four years ago) link

I take it you're not a Primal Scream fan...

Valentijn, Thursday, 18 July 2019 10:49 (four years ago) link

No, although Andrew Weatherall made a pretty decent album once with some of its members tangentially involved.

And I think I put “Velocity Girl” near the top of my ballot for the ‘Songs under 120 seconds’ poll.

dorsalstop, Thursday, 18 July 2019 12:52 (four years ago) link

Nice. I don't think I've ever heard that album you mean.
The Scream aren't in my top 30 favourite bands or anything but I do enjoy them a lot, and I also admit to having an extra soft spot for Bobby Gillespie after speaking to him once at an afterpary, as he was extremely nice, relaxed and funny. He's nowhere near the best singer in the world but I certainly find joy in his contributions.

Valentijn, Thursday, 18 July 2019 14:32 (four years ago) link

Weatherall did a mix of one of their singles a few years back that was tremendous. It was in his ALFOS vibe, but I really enjoyed it.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 18 July 2019 17:38 (four years ago) link

Uptown? That was great, yeah

Nice. I don't think I've ever heard that album you mean.

Loving the idea of someone who’s quite into Primal Scream but just happened to miss that album.

(dorsalstop is eliding the production contributions of Jimmy Miller, Hypnotone and The Orb for comedic effect)

three months pass...

couple of years ago i filled in a few holes in my NO cd catalogue, but not this one or 'waiting .. '.
today, at last, i found 'get ready' for a coin.
why on earth did i not bother picking it up for years, it's bloody great.

mark e, Wednesday, 23 October 2019 15:01 (four years ago) link

of course. best no album of the 00s which isn't very difficult, actually.

brigadier pudding (DJP), Thursday, 24 October 2019 12:54 (four years ago) link

their worst this century. but hey they don't have a bad album!

maffew12, Thursday, 24 October 2019 12:59 (four years ago) link

I love Get Ready but if push came to shove, I'd prob rank it last of their three post-reunion albums (not counting Lost Sirens obv)

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 24 October 2019 13:09 (four years ago) link

My position exactly. Music Complete's excellence caused me to rethink its two predecessors.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 24 October 2019 13:11 (four years ago) link

i love "nothing but a fool" more than anything on get ready i think

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 October 2019 13:39 (four years ago) link

"Academic" does the let's-hold-a-guitar-groove-for-32-minutes NO thing so well.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 24 October 2019 13:47 (four years ago) link

60 Miles An Hour and Rock The Shack stop this being truly great, but I still like it a good amount. A step down from Republic but a step up from Sirens.

kitchen person, Thursday, 24 October 2019 14:25 (four years ago) link

I'd recommend searching out the pre-mix / pre-release version of the album that includes some b-sides, and a better version of Crystal. There are a handful of incredible songs on Get Ready, but my all time favs from Get Ready are Primitive Notion and Vicious Streak.

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 24 October 2019 17:28 (four years ago) link

sounds great, but i am not going to find that in poundland though am i ?
oh, and as for the comment re the cover art upthread : huh !!?
i love the cover.
in fact i don't think that NO have ever had a bad album cover.
and that includes the myriad of compilations.

mark e, Thursday, 24 October 2019 18:42 (four years ago) link

one thing that did surprise me is the breakdown re the credits.
there is a lot of studio personel involved as opposed to just one crew.
surprising given that after the few listens, i think that the album has a very consistent sound.

mark e, Thursday, 24 October 2019 18:47 (four years ago) link

Love the cover. Love Vicious Streak.
Where can I find these rough mixes?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 24 October 2019 19:50 (four years ago) link

Thanks for the link but I think the files expired :(

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 24 October 2019 20:46 (four years ago) link

Found it on slsk last night -- looks like both the original leak and Power of Independent Trucking's mastered version are out there, as well as a companion disc of demos/early mixes.
