A) why do people transcribe his calls?
B) why do I still laugh when I read them?

"This is freaking Benedict, dude."

Uh, I don't know who you are.

"That's who I am, dude. And you're gonna know all about me."

hey good news - i'm halping lpc!
i'm still not 100% what the larger project is, but i'll be contributing a couple minutes of video/animation as a sort of interlude. i'm really excited/nervous because i generally make shorter things, so this is a really cool opportunity.

i'm trying to immerse myself in LPC imagery and things that fit in that universe. lambs will play a role, but i'm still trying to understand the deeper meaning behind them

i promise not to liveblog the making of this clip but i think LPC fans would appreciate knowing that the first two sections that i'm working on appear to be 157 BPM (in fact, i'm almost certain it's more like 157.4 BPM) and 143 BPM, respectively. at 30 frames per second, this means that 1 beat = .382165 seconds = 11.46 frames ,and 4 beats = 1.5286 seconds = 45.86 frames. i appreciate that, structurally, there is no way to exactly align the animation frames to the beat. It'll be close enough that no one except audio rain man will be able to tell the difference, but it'll still require the creation of 46 frame animation segments (and the occasional 45-framer so things don't get too far out of whack) to make it work, which is awesome

Karl Malone, Monday, 11 December 2017 23:38 (six years ago) link

Totally awesome! :D

Were you an LPC fan already or did you dig in his stuff when this opportunity arose?

i knew a little bit about him...a friend of mine put him on a mix for me way back in the day, and i remember looking through this thread on occasion. but i've definitely done much more of a deep dive over the last couple weeks. heavy LPC vibes in my apartment recently, it's been a madhouse!

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 00:21 (six years ago) link

It has always vexed me that some professional editing programs like Avid Media Composer and suchlike don't have the facility to place an audio clip in between frames, so if they're working on 24, 25 or 29.97 they can't simply just place a beat or an edit exactly where it might be required, like I can do in Protools.

hey good news - i'm halping lpc!

that is rad! this sounds like it would be a very fun project! i can't wait to see the results.

It has always vexed me that some professional editing programs like Avid Media Composer and suchlike don't have the facility to place an audio clip in between frames

most commercial video editors & compositors (hate AE's timeline) i have used i find have insufficient timeline control imo except Premiere and FCP where you can at least advance and edit easily by one frame at a time. im not sure audio can live in between frames without editing the code of the video file itself outside of a program. one time i was playing around w Data Moshing and the trick behind that is to remove keyframes and have the codec itself generate the video image given the gap between the last previous keyframes and the next image. there was an open source program i used to do this but i forgot what it was.

the first two sections that i'm working on appear to be 157 BPM (in fact, i'm almost certain it's more like 157.4 BPM) and 143 BPM, respectively. at 30 frames per second, this means that 1 beat = .382165 seconds = 11.46 frames ,and 4 beats = 1.5286 seconds = 45.86 frames

are you doing this frame-by-frame w stop motion animation? what is your framerate? 29.97 or 30/Xfps? i used to use a Windows program called CoolEdit to assist with marking off frames. it is an audio editor and it displays time on the x axis as usual but you can switch between minutes/seconds and video frames w support for different framerates. you just set it to what you need and play the sound file (and/or look for the changes visually) and it displays it in fps. good look! this type of animation is very work-intensive but visually very rewarding!

funny, i have been hearing people irl and online talk about Longmont over the past few weeks. imo his legend is growing...

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 12 December 2017 17:15 (six years ago) link

good look!

lol good luck

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 12 December 2017 17:16 (six years ago) link

good look! haha

the larger project (i'm only making a short interlude for it) is 30 fps. it won't be too big of a deal to make things line up (i'm using premiere for the video editing). it it were entirely my own project, i'd just edit the audio slightly to make it align with the 30 fps visuals, but since i'm working to a pre-existing audio track (at 157 bpm, followed by a 143 bpm section that then gradu ally gets sl o w e r) it'll be a little bit trickier. but no big deal. i think the worst case scenario is that my visual cuts will, on occasion, be less than 1/30th of a second off of the barline of the audio. i was just kinda 420 last night so i temporarily got really into calculating exactly off it would be. :)
