blake is the secret presiding spirit of this thread obviously (sleeve of my favourite shop riffs off ditto for sgt pepper)

pleased that they got a zoom-in of the capt-tom-has-two-dicks image ((bottom left), sad they had to obscure it with obfuscatory captions

Blake is essentially a very conventional commercial illustrator imo so what he does is just a more professional version of what most of this amateur fan art is trying to do.

When I was a textile design student decades ago I was quite dismissive of him and something about his Britishness annoyed me, still does tbh.

I had this pervy tutor who would get metooed if he was still alive and he did this awful Blake self-portait tribute with badges, oh christ it was embarrassingly bad

it's interesting to me how narrowly period-trapped sources of pop art vii is. blake's precursors as collectors of english popular art (viz e.g. margaret lambert and enid marx) were digging all the way from the 1930s back to the 1700s and earlier -- but blake (like townshend and weller and lol the gallaghers after him) seems to get lost in the validation of in the eras of himself and his many moods, so it probably isn't surprising that it converts an insight (the bright ever-changing facade of the modern high street the spark that permits the soul of 50s-60s man-with-shed types, avatars after all of the national culture sat enjellied behind all modernity, to confuse their moods with anything but stasis)

I'm not saying artists have to be very perceptive and give lively + interesting interviews to be good artists, but he's not a good artist and he must be the dullest interviewee i've ever read in my life, and a full on name-dropping 60's lookback bore to boot. He doesn't even fucking slag off a few YBAs or come out as a brexiter (like Hockney did), he seems completely satisfied with his national heritage status. Nothing to see!

I remember an on-tv bust up he had with Danny Baker, back in the day (they were both Jonathan Ross interviewees)
