it took me far too long to realise that the reason for the pink face = the colours are supposed to look like the mod target. I like Weller's enigmatic expression in this one.

this fan tribute is not quite as chilling as that program that begins with Bernard Manning is talking to his own embalmed corpse, but there is something deeply unsettling about it.

peter blake, sources of pop art vii (2009)

https://www.artnet.com/WebServices/images/ll1694308llgq4jR3CfDrCWQFHPKAD/peter-blake-sources-of-pop-art-vii.jpg

mark s, Monday, 25 May 2020 11:45 (three years ago) link

blake is the secret presiding spirit of this thread obviously (sleeve of my favourite shop riffs off ditto for sgt pepper)

mark s, Monday, 25 May 2020 11:46 (three years ago) link

pleased that they got a zoom-in of the capt-tom-has-two-dicks image ((bottom left), sad they had to obscure it with obfuscatory captions

mark s, Monday, 25 May 2020 11:48 (three years ago) link

Blake is essentially a very conventional commercial illustrator imo so what he does is just a more professional version of what most of this amateur fan art is trying to do.

calzino, Monday, 25 May 2020 12:04 (three years ago) link

When I was a textile design student decades ago I was quite dismissive of him and something about his Britishness annoyed me, still does tbh.

calzino, Monday, 25 May 2020 12:12 (three years ago) link

I had this pervy tutor who would get metooed if he was still alive and he did this awful Blake self-portait tribute with badges, oh christ it was embarrassingly bad

calzino, Monday, 25 May 2020 12:14 (three years ago) link

it's interesting to me how narrowly period-trapped sources of pop art vii is. blake's precursors as collectors of english popular art (viz e.g. margaret lambert and enid marx) were digging all the way from the 1930s back to the 1700s and earlier -- but blake (like townshend and weller and lol the gallaghers after him) seems to get lost in the validation of in the eras of himself and his many moods, so it probably isn't surprising that it converts an insight (the bright ever-changing facade of the modern high street the spark that permits the soul of 50s-60s man-with-shed types, avatars after all of the national culture sat enjellied behind all modernity, to confuse their moods with anything but stasis)

mark s, Monday, 25 May 2020 12:41 (three years ago) link

s/b converts an insight (…) into a symptom

Great thread, although originally I thought this was going to be about the Peter Weller death scare I think I read about on the obit thead.

Trouble Is My Métier (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 25 May 2020 15:17 (three years ago) link

"but blake (like townshend and weller and lol the gallaghers after him) seems to get lost in the validation of in the eras of himself"

I'm not saying artists have to be very perceptive and give lively + interesting interviews to be good artists, but he's not a good artist and he must be the dullest interviewee i've ever read in my life, and a full on name-dropping 60's lookback bore to boot. He doesn't even fucking slag off a few YBAs or come out as a brexiter (like Hockney did), he seems completely satisfied with his national heritage status. Nothing to see!

calzino, Monday, 25 May 2020 15:29 (three years ago) link

I remember an on-tv bust up he had with Danny Baker, back in the day (they were both Jonathan Ross interviewees)

Mark G, Monday, 25 May 2020 15:32 (three years ago) link

I demand a t-shirt of this thread, or I will post my complete works all over ilx.
Meanwhile, since the most compatible images I want to post (Jeremy Irons, from Lolita, The Borgias etc) would prob be removed by copyright enforcers, I'll just mention my personal fave on here is atypcial: the one that looks like a pensive Link Wray, by Paul Don Smith (? can't quite make out the signature)--in shades, but something about body language seems pensive, also unique because can't see the desiccation around intent little eyes/stubborn brows (well not quite unique if count the A Wrinkle in Time granny love Weller posted earlier today by calzino, with no need for shades).
