ILM's shamful love of this band is my fave phenomenon.

I voted for "This Must Be My Dream," which I figured out doesn't sound like Alexander O'Neal so much as a track from Human League's Crash, also produced by Jam-Lewis.

Still don't know what to vote for. Few albums are so much more than the sum of their parts

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

that's the right top 3

ufo, Friday, 10 March 2017 00:15 (seven years ago) link

a little surprised that no one else voted for "if i believe you" -- i see it as the album's centerpiece

k3vin k., Friday, 10 March 2017 00:17 (seven years ago) link

i love it but it's too pastiche

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Friday, 10 March 2017 00:18 (seven years ago) link

Wow these results are surprising. "The Sound" seems low

monotony, Friday, 10 March 2017 00:36 (seven years ago) link

i might be coming around to "a change of heart" being the correct answer

k3vin k., Monday, 20 March 2017 19:47 (seven years ago) link

starting to crack the second half of the album. the title track, 'loving someone', 'paris', all crucial to me now. still not sure about the jesus one, 'this must be my dream', the shoegazey one, or the last 2

flopson, Monday, 20 March 2017 20:39 (seven years ago) link

actually nah i love the jesus one

flopson, Monday, 20 March 2017 20:44 (seven years ago) link

Increasingly convinced that "Paris" is their best song, edging out "Somebody Else" and "A Change of Heart." They're such a spotty band for me—makes sense when you make a 74 minute album indebted to a million disparate influences—but they've been on repeat since February 2016. Matt Healy can be insufferable (as on "Loving Someone" or "She's American," or in some of his interviews) but he's one of the funniest lyricists of the last couple years. "You said I'm full of diseases/Your eyes were full of regret/And then you took a picture of your salad/And put it on the Internet" would be a Drake lyric if he had a sense of humor. Moments in "The Sound" and "Paris" are also funny.

"You're so conceited, I / said I don't love you / what does it matter if I lied to you?"

is a perfect lyric

Tim F, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 08:02 (seven years ago) link

"She's a pain in the nose/And I'm a pain in women's clothes/And you're a walking overdose in a great coat" and "Mr. Serotonin Man, lend me a gram/You call yourself a friend?"

are also great

for some reason "a change of heart" gives me vibes similar to modern vampires of the city as well as those of hats, so basically the best shit ever

k3vin k., Wednesday, 22 March 2017 02:47 (seven years ago) link

"theremin" sound on Change of Heart is just a synth with the portamento cranked up to the max (imo)

flopson, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 15:12 (seven years ago) link

at first 'somebody else' was my favorite but 'change of heart' has more replay imo

Okay, well...

*deep breath*

I'm sure Brad is going to be all like "I told you so", and I'm fully willing to eat enough humble pie to make me obese, but as it turns out...

...I actually really like this album. No joke!

I FUCKING TOLD YOU SO

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:25 (five years ago) link

I had a very bad first impression of this band - I didn't like the first album at all (I still don't - I revisited it after getting into this album recently and it reminded me why I disliked the band at first - I just don't think the songwriting or vocal performances are that strong) and I found Matty Healy to be incredibly insufferable (and still do) but this album is a huge leap ahead, IMO, and I wish this album had been the first thing I heard from 'em.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:26 (five years ago) link

Simon H., Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:32 (five years ago) link

Like, they seem to have rectified almost everything I disliked about the first LP on this record - the songwriting is stronger, the vocals hardly ever veer into territory that annoys me and are more pleasant to listen to, and of course I love the diversity of the thing. That George Daniel is as much, if not more of a creative force in this band helps. It's really not the Matt Healy show. Some of the lyrics are a bit ridic in places, but I'm willing to overlook this. The only song I find "lesser" than the others is 'Loving Someone', everything else is great.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:32 (five years ago) link

('Paris', 'She's American', 'Lostmyhead' and 'She Lays Down' all too low)

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:38 (five years ago) link

wow this is truly one of the great ILM moments

Hall of Fam (Spottie), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:45 (five years ago) link

I'm still not a fan of the first album. Some of the tracks on the EP's are quite nice. This album is great!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:48 (five years ago) link

oh yeah i was gonna direct you toward the eps

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:49 (five years ago) link

Yeah, on the EP's it's mostly the "atmospheric" stuff I like, but I really like 'So Far (It's Alright)'!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 16:56 (five years ago) link

This is weird. Is this real?

I too don't have that much time for the debut and think the follow up was a massive step up. Just out of interest, what made you finally decide to give it a listen?

It really makes me feel like anything is possible on here now. I can see Lex reappearing us to tell us that he's had a change of heart about Destroyer and how he's been having a glorious summer of Kaputt!
