Goddamn, Paul Ryan, I'm dumb as a rock and I understand how insurance works. You too busy wailing on your pecs to pick up a book once in a while?

does anybody know a place online where you can track the progress of the AHCA? as in what committees it goes to next and when it's up for a full House vote? i can't find anyfuckingthing, which is not terribly surprising giving the clandestine nature of all of this.

This doesn't sound rushed or anything.

I look forward to the updated Schoolhouse Rocks cartoon that explains the perverted means by which the new laws of the land come to fruition.

The White House should install a CoinStar-like machine by the front door - you pour in bags of money, and select the groups you'd like your legislation to directly benefit from a drop-down touch screen menu.

okay even if they get all the GOP on board, there's no way the AHCA will pass the Senate, right? I can't imagine any Dems going for it

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 9 March 2017 21:59 (seven years ago) link

every Dem Senator is on record as being against it. But the reconciliation process only requires a simple majority, which the GOP has. Not *everything* about the repeal/replace can be dealt with in reconciliation though, which is where Trump's brilliant plan to hold rallies in red states with Dem Senators to threaten them comes into play. I don't think it will work but we'll see.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 March 2017 22:02 (seven years ago) link

esp because there are likely to be GOP defections in the Senate over this, and the Dems only need 2 to break McConnell's majority.

what can't be passed via reconciliation? isn't that how the ACA was passed in the first place?

akm, Thursday, 9 March 2017 23:15 (seven years ago) link

reconciliation can only be used to deal specifically with the budget. Non-budgetary related legislation (ie that doesn't have costs directly associated with it) has to go through the normal legislative process.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 March 2017 23:19 (seven years ago) link

ACA cleared the Senate w 60 votes.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 March 2017 23:20 (seven years ago) link

to be even more specific, reconciliation can only be used when there are two bills (one from the House and one from the Senate) that each have budgetary impacts and thus have to be "reconciled" before they can be considered approved by both chambers, with the final bill only requiring a simple majority vote. This is how Bush's tax cut was passed, among other things.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 March 2017 23:23 (seven years ago) link

I am grossly oversimplifying things here btw but that's the short version
