I still don't understand why someone who's so weirdly good at writing pop-punk songs would stoop to writing Band of Horses b-sides

idk i don't think there's a lot separating julien baker from something like rainer maria's "rise." in interviews she talks about how much she loved fob and her songs, in terms of the way the chords move and the way she sings over them, show it imo

she also makes me very emotional

also her band (formerly the star killers, i don't remember their current name) is super emo

Not to be genre-policing, but can someone explain to me how Julien Baker belongs in this poll? On first listen it sounds like 500 other singer-songwriters, but maybe I'm missing something.

more seriously while she superficially sounds like a lot of other songwriters she is working in a very different register

it is kind of strange to have something like julien baker place so high and have zero of red house painters' 90's albums even be nominated (regardless of of toxic present-day Kozelek may be)

There are major Fevers & Mirrors vibes in that final stretch of Sprained Ankle. Same very intense, live play-by-play of bottoming out, something that's pretty unique to emo

I'll be curious how many of the top 100 will pass the "is this band emo" test, around 50% I'd guess (fwiw Julien Baker "passes" lol)

This one line's always stayed with me: Laura you were the saddest song in the shape of a woman.

"funeral pyre" (her amazing recent single) suggests if anything her next album could be even more painful

I wrote an unusually personal thing about how that album became a kind of emotional rehab tool for me, helping me rebuild myself during the worst time of my life. I'm honestly not sure how I would have made it through without that record, but the tradeoff now is that hearing most of those songs again kinda makes me nauseous, the associations are so strong

It does sound great but it's also mostly just what she sounds like, she has great tone and loop pedal deployment

brad otm re 33. Devil in Jersey City is a perfect straight up pop-punk punch too.

Bright Eyes are definitely the least emo (to me) artist to place so far but I'm really not a fan so my bias may be clouding my judgement. I revisited Read Music/Speak Spanish last night and thought it was OK, I think I just struggle with Oberst's voice.

I hear cries of not emo but too low from some and too high from others

Once it was nominated there was no way i wasn't gonna vote for it
