I still don't understand why someone who's so weirdly good at writing pop-punk songs would stoop to writing Band of Horses b-sides

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:31 (seven years ago) link

idk i don't think there's a lot separating julien baker from something like rainer maria's "rise." in interviews she talks about how much she loved fob and her songs, in terms of the way the chords move and the way she sings over them, show it imo

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:31 (seven years ago) link

she also makes me very emotional

devvvine, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:32 (seven years ago) link

also her band (formerly the star killers, i don't remember their current name) is super emo

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:32 (seven years ago) link

Not entirely conviced yet.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:33 (seven years ago) link

highly recommended if you like sprained ankle btw https://thestarkillerstn.bandcamp.com/album/american-blues

Not to be genre-policing, but can someone explain to me how Julien Baker belongs in this poll? On first listen it sounds like 500 other singer-songwriters, but maybe I'm missing something.

emotional intensity maaaaan

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:33 (seven years ago) link

xxp - Lol, I read that like the name of her band is Super Emo.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:34 (seven years ago) link

more seriously while she superficially sounds like a lot of other songwriters she is working in a very different register

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:34 (seven years ago) link

(i looked it up, her band's name is currently forrister)

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:34 (seven years ago) link

xp 'Superficially' is exactly the mode I was listening to her album while trying to finish something before a deadline.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:35 (seven years ago) link

there wasn't this much controversy about pinegrove ac!!!!

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:35 (seven years ago) link

it is kind of strange to have something like julien baker place so high and have zero of red house painters' 90's albums even be nominated (regardless of of toxic present-day Kozelek may be)

gr8080, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:37 (seven years ago) link

xp If I'd heard Pinegrove I might have.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:40 (seven years ago) link

There are major Fevers & Mirrors vibes in that final stretch of Sprained Ankle. Same very intense, live play-by-play of bottoming out, something that's pretty unique to emo

Evan R, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:46 (seven years ago) link

I'll be curious how many of the top 100 will pass the "is this band emo" test, around 50% I'd guess (fwiw Julien Baker "passes" lol)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:50 (seven years ago) link

lol, yeah. Also all aesthetic conventions aside, what other genre could this verse have come from?

And I haven't been taking my meds
So lock all the cabinets, and send me to bed
Cause I know you're still worried
I'm gonna get scared again
And make my insides clean with your kitchen bleach
But I've kissed enough bathroom sinks
to make up for the lovers that never loved me

Evan R, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:53 (seven years ago) link

xp Not to give anything away, but there's one such band coming up shortly.

ArchCarrier, Thursday, 9 March 2017 15:54 (seven years ago) link

this is my first exposure to julien baker. uh, tough listen.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:00 (seven years ago) link

the first time i listened to sprained ankle i was on the verge of a breakup without being really conscious of it. it destroyed me

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:02 (seven years ago) link

oh man yeah i can't even imagine.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:03 (seven years ago) link

there is some kind of magic at spacebomb though, what a great-sounding record

call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:05 (seven years ago) link

in lolcollege i was close friends with the namesake of "lifted"'s penultimate track... it kinda ruined her internet life when it was released

This one line's always stayed with me: Laura you were the saddest song in the shape of a woman.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:06 (seven years ago) link

"funeral pyre" (her amazing recent single) suggests if anything her next album could be even more painful

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:06 (seven years ago) link

I wrote an unusually personal thing about how that album became a kind of emotional rehab tool for me, helping me rebuild myself during the worst time of my life. I'm honestly not sure how I would have made it through without that record, but the tradeoff now is that hearing most of those songs again kinda makes me nauseous, the associations are so strong

It does sound great but it's also mostly just what she sounds like, she has great tone and loop pedal deployment

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:08 (seven years ago) link

thank you for sharing that, evan. good stuff.

call all destroyer, Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:11 (seven years ago) link

yeah she recreates that sense of space in every room i've seen her in xp

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:11 (seven years ago) link

I think I'm starting to like this Crying album now. It's like if Trans Am were backing band and making a pop rock album

Odysseus, Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:12 (seven years ago) link

i'm revisiting acceptance's phantoms and i really regret not nominating it! just wanted to say that!

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:12 (seven years ago) link

i thought i had nominated it but neglected to as well

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:15 (seven years ago) link

Coheed alb rules

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:24 (seven years ago) link

brad otm re 33. Devil in Jersey City is a perfect straight up pop-punk punch too.

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:26 (seven years ago) link

Bright Eyes are definitely the least emo (to me) artist to place so far but I'm really not a fan so my bias may be clouding my judgement. I revisited Read Music/Speak Spanish last night and thought it was OK, I think I just struggle with Oberst's voice.

booooo (brilliant album but c'mon)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:51 (seven years ago) link

I hear cries of not emo but too low from some and too high from others

Odysseus, Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:52 (seven years ago) link

Once it was nominated there was no way i wasn't gonna vote for it

Odysseus, Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:52 (seven years ago) link

I mean I'm not gonna complain that hard about maybe the best rock band of the last decade making it in

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:53 (seven years ago) link

if it had to place at least it's here

i guess i should've campaigned harder for the metalcore i nominated lol

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:53 (seven years ago) link

too many people in this poll hate trve emo

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:54 (seven years ago) link

nobody in this poll can even define emo spottie, lol

Odysseus, Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:54 (seven years ago) link

i can

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:55 (seven years ago) link

but i wont

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:55 (seven years ago) link

"You wouldn't understand anyway."

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:56 (seven years ago) link

Ha, OK, this is even less emo than Bright Eyes (Then again I'm sure there were people on one of the metal polls arguing that Converge aren't metal so what do I know).

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:56 (seven years ago) link

exactly xp

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:57 (seven years ago) link

i was prepared for this to place tho tbf

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Thursday, 9 March 2017 16:58 (seven years ago) link

btw spottie the new acceptance record is really good!
