I voted the opening track as my number one song of the year in the EOY poll. Have fun Mordy!

an emo band named Crying... seems kind of meta

Guy Pidgeotto (Tom Violence), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 21:35 (seven years ago) link

one thing about no devolucion: i have no insight into the actual mastering process but given fridmann's history i think it might be so hotly mastered that it ended up producing a ton of negative space and weird auras around all of the instruments

xxp will do. wearing my dashboard t-shirt and a coheed hoodie <3 synchronicity!

Emo 2 the core :)

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 21:38 (seven years ago) link

regardless imo all of the bright eyes records aged horribly

Cassadaga has help up way better than I would have expected.

Evan R, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 21:39 (seven years ago) link

i want to genre police so bad but whatever.

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:00 (seven years ago) link

Can't imagine any other genre poll on ILX with quite so many "this isn't [genre we are polling]" comments

Evan R, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:08 (seven years ago) link

genre policing has been critical to emo since time immemorial

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:10 (seven years ago) link

the one emo/pop-punk focused message board i post on is consumed by genre-policing arguments at least once every two weeks

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:12 (seven years ago) link

imo by those standards we're doing great

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:12 (seven years ago) link

There are... more music forums than ILM?

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:14 (seven years ago) link

don't investigate

Fantastic, amazing message board.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:16 (seven years ago) link

Anyway, checking out some of the albums I hadn't heard before but wow, The Ugly Organ is pretty good, isn't it?

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:17 (seven years ago) link

i guess i just didn't think some of these fringe inclusions would make it this high in the countdown.

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:23 (seven years ago) link

I ignored the Crying album last year since I'm a miserable contrarian asshole who ignores records people go apeshit for because they underwhelm more often than not; this is quite sweet and endearingly dorky though.

For some reason people are comparing it to Dream Theater lol

― Evan R,

Metal poll has nothing on this poll.

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:27 (seven years ago) link

yeah metal would be the only thing that comes close. But this is metal if, like, 60% of the acts on that poll pushed back against being called metal

Evan R, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:29 (seven years ago) link

**VG Listening Update***

Sunny Day Real Estate - holy fuck it really is like Pearl Jam is the backing band, musical similarities are nuts. But not in a mimicking way.
Anyway: Love love LOVE. On first listen I def prefer Diary over Rising Tide

Fireside are great. Very enjoyable

I also dug back into older Jimmy Eat World (Static Prevails) yeah they def fit into this emo profile i'm building lol. Love this other dude's vocals, and the harmonies together b/w two singers blend so well

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:31 (seven years ago) link

Love this other dude's vocals, and the harmonies together b/w two singers blend so well

too bad it literally never happens again in their discography

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:33 (seven years ago) link

last one for today and the band i'm actually willing to leave the comfort of my home tnite to see live

lol that is beautiful kismet

gr8080, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:34 (seven years ago) link

have they said why they switched? like did it cause conflict? other dude stayed in the band afaict or am i wrong

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:36 (seven years ago) link

btw Three Mile Pilot are indeed amazing

knew you'd like them!

don't think it was nominated but you shld really check out "another desert, another sea"

gr8080, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:39 (seven years ago) link

i think the official story is that jim just started writing soooo much and tom just sorta recognized what was happening and stepped back (possibly this is fanfic i've absorbed over the years). tom is still the guitarist though yeah

xpost

― gr8080,

If I had nominated anything I would have nominated this for sure.

I would also have nominated a few things on Hydrahead that was screamo. Isis - Celestial was considered screamo at the time and thats prob why I got into them. It's also why metal purists hated them of course.

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:54 (seven years ago) link

that's kinda cool imo xpost

Yoni Loves Chocha (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:54 (seven years ago) link

but City of Caterpillar wasn't even nommed and I persuaded enough people to listen to them (and Gospel) and they voted them in so I'm happy!

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:55 (seven years ago) link

ok well at least isis weren't nominated

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 22:59 (seven years ago) link

Would only have been Celestial

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 23:00 (seven years ago) link

yeah i don't even think that qualifies

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 23:01 (seven years ago) link

Surely at least one Converge album will place. I'd hope Jane Doe would but who can tell with people saying "i love that band but they're not emo". The uncertainty makes it a fun poll.

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 23:01 (seven years ago) link

idk Isis is totally mallpunk ime

Guy Pidgeotto (Tom Violence), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 23:19 (seven years ago) link

wait Isis was considered emo at one point? gtfo

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 23:25 (seven years ago) link

no, SCREAMO not emo

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 23:26 (seven years ago) link

One emo album on Hydrahead I really should have nominated but forgot about is Guitar Method by Kid Kilowatt.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 23:26 (seven years ago) link

the term post metal wasnt invented then

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 23:27 (seven years ago) link

hey were Cave In nominated?

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 23:31 (seven years ago) link

heh I forgot Piebald were once on Hydrahead

Odysseus, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 23:33 (seven years ago) link

i don't need the metalheads- i have my own plan to defeat Isis
