i know some people really love this the lobster, but it played like a high-concept napoleon dynamite to me

intheblanks, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:03 (seven years ago) link

Did it make it to the list last year?

Frederik B, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:03 (seven years ago) link

we should say the hell with release date pedantry

― the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, March 7, 2017

or the hell with time-traveling nihilists

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:05 (seven years ago) link

no Fred, bcz the hell with Europe

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:06 (seven years ago) link

Lobster is great, btw. Visually the best Lanthimos by far. First half is best, but second half was more of a bonus to me, rather than a letdown.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:06 (seven years ago) link

a high-concept napoleon dynamite

what a terrible oxymoron; watch Dogtooth

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:07 (seven years ago) link

It just seemed somehow so overwrought and stilted (beyond the intentional stiltedness). Barely hung together and was full of gross little touches that made me never want to see Dogtooth no matter how often people say to.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:08 (seven years ago) link

Oh Dogtooth is far more gross.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:09 (seven years ago) link

It didn't make the list last year. I was so surprised at how low it was I rechecked the ballots.

does dogtooth have a scene as stupidly overwrought as "The gun whose trigger you just pulled wasn't loaded!" break-in thing in the middle of the lobster?

My #3. Fuck you alllllll

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:12 (seven years ago) link

imago won a t-shirt from Ben Wheatley at the Q&A

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:13 (seven years ago) link

Wheatley speaks to my soul and on this occasion he speaks to my soul with a giant overblown mad-ride through trenchant social commentary and it's GLORIOUS

an uptempo Pop/Hip Hop mentality (imago), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:13 (seven years ago) link

Felt afterwards like I should have read the book instead.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:15 (seven years ago) link

the book stinks too

I don't see enough new movies during the year for a ballot of mine to be in anyway meaningful

didn't stop our douchiest regular, apparently

Tower wouldn't have shown up if I hadn't self-loathingly voted, so there's that. damn u Gukbe

obv O.J. is winning

shoot this movie back and to the left

^brought this home from the library this very night

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:34 (seven years ago) link

The plot reads similarly to The Falling (which I loved). Does anyone know if there's a connection there?

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:39 (seven years ago) link

One of the films I regret missing.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:39 (seven years ago) link

wish I could have seen this. I really love The Death of Mr. Lazarescu

Dan S, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:48 (seven years ago) link

I've not hear of any of these films! Good work ilxors!

Heavy Doors (jed_), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:49 (seven years ago) link

Saw it, liked it enormously; ineligible in my eyes. Still apparently w/out US distribution.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:53 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, pretty stoked to see it whenever it eventually comes out.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 01:53 (seven years ago) link

You people and your unreleased Romanian films.

Was among the two votes for Love Witch and am at least glad it's placement here is going to spur a lot of redressing.

And The Fits gets better and better in memory. Already wish I'd have slotted it higher.

42. 20th Century Women (d: Mills) - 76 pts. 5 votes

http://i.imgur.com/Y2oIpl6.jpg

Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:10 (seven years ago) link

Lots of people I know love this. I saw it twice and thought Mills interfered, as usual, with the3 pathos of his own material.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:19 (seven years ago) link

That film gets better the more I think about it. Molly Haskell was pretty good on it.

Gukbe, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:19 (seven years ago) link

Bening and Crudup are terrific together.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:20 (seven years ago) link

wish I liked the Jóhannsson score to Arrival more, it was disappointing to me.
loved 20th Century Women

Dan S, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:21 (seven years ago) link

Tower is something which shouldn't work, but the rotoscope pulls you in more effectively than a straightforward reenactment would and the scene where the newscaster announces his grandsons death is one of the most gut wrenching scenes of last year.

that image captures the best moment of the movie for me

Dan S, Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:32 (seven years ago) link

The worst I can say about 20th Century Women is its more of a showcase for great moments than a great film. Which is to say, it made my list without hesitation.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:34 (seven years ago) link

Sometimes too quiet; I don't think Nichols has the skill yet to make that sort of stillness work. Often moving, though, especially Negga. If you got kids, watch it on a double bill with I Am Not Your Negro.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:34 (seven years ago) link

The Fits: Quite good, and surprising. I went in expecting something like, I dunno, Real Women Have Curves or some such thing and got something much closer to It Follows.

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 8 March 2017 02:35 (seven years ago) link

I was expecting 20th Century and Loving to be tedious awards bait (despite Nichols especially), but was pleasantly surprised to find both far more intelligent and engaging as a result.
