odysseus - he can be a chronic complainer but he's been moaning in this chat on fb all day about how this poll will be too poppy for his tastes and now he's whining on the thread. i guess whining is apropos to the pop punk genre but i feel like it's really not in the spirit of emo which should be more sincere + devastated than snot-nosed and bratty.

Mordy, Monday, 6 March 2017 21:30 (seven years ago) link

oh... well at least it's mostly relegated to FB then.

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 21:32 (seven years ago) link

So jealous of that Dashboard gig. Praying for an international tour.

Amazing cover image itt btw!

tangenttangent, Monday, 6 March 2017 21:38 (seven years ago) link

I don't like a lot of the pop stuff either but idc if it places high

I want to change my display name (dan m), Monday, 6 March 2017 21:42 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, I've never seen a show with such loud cathartic singing along as when I saw Dashboard in Seattle.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 6 March 2017 21:43 (seven years ago) link

The chorus of Quicksand's "Head to Wall" is a great example of how post hardcore and emo can blur

I want to change my display name (dan m), Monday, 6 March 2017 21:51 (seven years ago) link

Wow, this Pedro the Lion stuff is lovely. Great with the build and a twinge of dark folk in there...so nice.

tangenttangent, Monday, 6 March 2017 21:53 (seven years ago) link

I always considered post-hardcore to be a subsidiary of emo as much as of punk, even when it shares almost nothing in common with the sound...but that might just be because I came to like both at around the same time. They have pretty similar followings too imo... Different days/different t-shirts.

tangenttangent, Monday, 6 March 2017 21:58 (seven years ago) link

listen to Modern Lovers s/t and tell me the 2nd wave of emo wasn't based entirely on that album

rip van wanko, Monday, 6 March 2017 22:01 (seven years ago) link

the only time i saw dashboard was when they opened for 3eb a few years ago. for some reason my tickets allowed me to join a group of superfans in the dashboard dressing room where carrabba did solo acoustic versions of like "as lovers go" and etc. it rules

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 6 March 2017 22:46 (seven years ago) link

er, ruled*. i'm not still there

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 6 March 2017 22:47 (seven years ago) link

otoh eternally trapped in a dressing room listening to dashboard confessional does sound like some sort of hell

Mordy, Monday, 6 March 2017 22:57 (seven years ago) link

wow rude

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 23:02 (seven years ago) link

sorry i mean i love them very very much but i was just thinking about if i could never listen to anything else ever again and while extremely appealing to me i don't find dashboard to be an infinite well of revelation

Mordy, Monday, 6 March 2017 23:11 (seven years ago) link

lol fair

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 23:13 (seven years ago) link

I saw DC at an art college in Boston in 2001 sometime before the So Impossible EP came out. I don't think there were a lot of people singing along yet, since he hadn't broken through on the scale that he would a couple years later. I haven't seen him since, mostly because I never listened to A Mark etc.

haha we did it sund4r! shotmaker makes the cut

Cheers, Will M. and irrational.

No idea what you are into but I think the top 50 of the poll will be dominated by the big pop albums interspersed by some of the big 90s names

yeah, I tend to like a lot of the Saddle Creek/Polyvinyl/indie-adjacent stuff, which isn't well represented yet, as well as punkier Dischordy stuff. Lots of my other favs I'm sure will place high (Hotelier, Paramore, that kinda stuff), but there were a lot of fringe LPs I voted for that I'm not even sure made the list, so it'll be cool to see. In the meantime I guess now is as good as anytime to try listening to Save Anything

Evan R, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 02:33 (seven years ago) link

how many people voted by the way?

Evan R, Tuesday, 7 March 2017 02:33 (seven years ago) link

The times they are a changing, perhaps (map), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 02:44 (seven years ago) link

:D :D :D

also:

there was this band that barely existed in ~2002ish, called Roads to Shiloh, from Ottawa. They were maybe the best post-Shotmaker band from the era? Or maybe I'm biased because the lead singer was my improv coach when I was 14? YOU BE THE JUDGE.

The only song I can find on the internet, never mind the meme someone uploaded as a an album cover, this song is probably old enough to drive a car

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 08:37 (seven years ago) link

One of the tracks on the Rival Schools album ("Holding Sand") is mysteriously absent from Spotify.

I think Weights and Measures was the best early 00s Ottawa band in the broad post-hc/emo/math rock genre.

idk are you listening to quicksand

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Tuesday, 7 March 2017 15:01 (seven years ago) link

They were maybe the best post-Shotmaker band from the era?

some of my best pals in HS had a band for about a year that was such a beautiful rip-off of Shotmaker's sound - sadly i dont think any recordings exist

they were so solely invested in the sound that they just lazily stole the lyrics from chumbawamba's "tubthumping" for one song and ginuwine's "pony" for another
