saetia fuckin rules

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 6 March 2017 17:50 (seven years ago) link

would be interested to hear about people's thoughts about the differentiation between the two, where that line is drawn

my entirely private distinction is that emo is generally more melodic, at least when the two terms actually diverge (they're one and the same circa embrace and rites of spring i think). but then: why do i think the boys life record is emo and not post-hardcore (actually i kinda think it's both)

call all destroyer, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:05 (seven years ago) link

gettin' a lot of the hardcore noms out of the way

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:07 (seven years ago) link

yeah I kinda figured that most of my votes would be boosting those records on the low end of the rankings

"kinda both" sums up most of my final analysis on this stuff

mine too dan m. I know the pop stuff in the poll will dominate the top end

Odysseus, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:15 (seven years ago) link

Angel Hair was super important to my formative musical experience/depression

Yeah it's really hard to pin down - for me the stuff on the post-hardcore side is more riffy, heavier, also less poppy in terms of songwriting (more angular?). Maybe a bit more rooted in the macho side of hardcore too. The screamo/Gravity Records type stuff really complicates things too! Anyway I'm sure people will disagree and would like to hear other takes too - I mean I ended up voting for Hoover and Drive Like Jehu but not Fugazi or Jawbox.

My #2!

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:27 (seven years ago) link

Spottie, idk, maybe try "The Stool Is Cool" or "Space Ape". The "Stigmata Martyr" cover is probably the most accessible one and it really kicks tbh; sometimes I wonder if it's my favourite!

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:29 (seven years ago) link

i'd agree with that assessment gavin, although i group hoover, drive like jehu, fugazi, and jawbox together and didn't vote for either of them (despite being no. 1 hoover fan 4ever)

way too low. Another one of my votes.

Odysseus, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:31 (seven years ago) link

I always liked "Witch Hunt Scene from Star Trek" as an insane freak out go to.

Bedroom scene from communion is a more mid tempo one that I like a lot.

Tbh, the first time I ever heard the term "emo" was in reference to Fugazi and Hoover. I don't really consider the really macho or hardline/sXe hardcore stuff to be emo but I'm fine with calling any arty post-hardcore emo. In mid-90s Ottawa, I thought of Union of Uranus as 'metal' and Okara and Shotmaker as 'emo'. I even thought Buried Inside was kind of 'emo' at their first couple of shows if only for Nick's before-song speeches but they were def on the metal side.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 6 March 2017 18:41 (seven years ago) link

* macho metalcore/moshcore

As in, this is how I thought of it 20 years ago. Obv, I get that the meanings of terms change, especially dopey made-up terms like "emo".

and nobody is more macho than sund4r

Odysseus, Monday, 6 March 2017 18:42 (seven years ago) link

liking Witch Hunt and Space Ape thanks.

Crazy that this stuff is gonna be in the same rollout as Fall Out Boy, but here we are. Plenty to discover so far.

awesome. late discovery and addition to my ballot.

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 19:02 (seven years ago) link

killer album, right at the center of so many styles

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 6 March 2017 19:05 (seven years ago) link

this was lower down on my ballot

Odysseus, Monday, 6 March 2017 19:05 (seven years ago) link

Literally the 50th album I added to my ballot, about half an hour before I sent it in. Good find, Spottie!

ArchCarrier, Monday, 6 March 2017 19:05 (seven years ago) link

I remember a friend at school being really into this when it came out. I didn't get round to listening to it though.

cajunsunday, Monday, 6 March 2017 19:12 (seven years ago) link

Rival Schools is a post quicksand Walter band right?

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 6 March 2017 19:16 (seven years ago) link

yes

Odysseus, Monday, 6 March 2017 19:17 (seven years ago) link

Rival Schools were great. For some silly reason I forgot to vote for it. I used to play that record to pieces in 2001. I did vote for Quicksand though (and Jawbox).

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Monday, 6 March 2017 19:22 (seven years ago) link

I wanted to like Rival Schools way more than I actually did. Same goes for most of walter's bands. I love Quicksand to death tho

yuhhhhh

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 6 March 2017 19:31 (seven years ago) link

i love how gross that record sounds, but also how there feels like there's a real narrative to it as it slowly gets more accessible and exploratory

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 6 March 2017 19:32 (seven years ago) link

^ otm. When the album first got mentioned in the voting thread, I turned it off after a few tracks because I thought it didn't belong to the emo poll. But then 'Radon' came up on shuffle later on, and it almost was like a different band.

ArchCarrier, Monday, 6 March 2017 19:40 (seven years ago) link

This thirty ought six album is great. Somehow never heard it before, but so far it's right up my alley
