I saw that WFMU documentary (believe it's still streaming on Amazon for Prime members), and the majority of that film focused on how desperate they were to raise money. They just barely met their goals in that film by the end (spoilers). I can only imagine it gets a little harder every year.

wfmu thing i've been enjoying lately is irwin chusid playing these old Tom Wilson (producer of dylan, simon, sun ra, zappa, VU, etc) broadcasts from the 60s. definitely worth donating for those alone!
