xxp - the Empire! Empire! I nominated a little earlier is also from the RYM list. Nice and melodic.

Also, kind of relieved to see I'm not the only one who has major emo-gaps in their life.

It took me a minute to figure out that thew parenthetical is actually part of their name - that's an impressive level of fuckery

This is where I admit that I never really gave Cap n Jazz a fair chance before but they sound great right now. (I know I heard all of An Alphabetapolothology in a car one time in 1998 and didn't click with it.)

In the end, I couldn't hang with the vox.

Speaking of Cap Jazz - I didn't love the album but I'm listening to American Football now and this is def more my kind of thing

you got it

two songs in and a. bemis is as full-on as I've always heard and b. these are some serious fuckin guitars

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 03:33 (seven years ago) link

he sings like he's learned how to from imitating/singing along to someone else but I can't tell who

the opening to "the writhing south" was kinda offputting but the chorus is pretty mega

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 03:37 (seven years ago) link

again the guitar breaks are RIDICULOUS wtf why does no one ever talk about this

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 03:38 (seven years ago) link

why is it that only one man bands have audible bass parts

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 03:47 (seven years ago) link

tbh some/most of these songs could use an edit but they also all seem to feature at least one really distinctive/great part

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 03:52 (seven years ago) link

I think "Every Man Needs a Molly" is my favourite.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 03:52 (seven years ago) link

"spidersong" is the first one I'm not sure about, which is impressive

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 03:55 (seven years ago) link

the way "an orgy of critics" just becomes a totally different song for about 30 seconds made me freak the fuck out, likee instead of a middle 8 it has a middle song

I think part of the difficulty of the idea of the emo poll is the nostalgia factor, which makes it difficult to pick up new favorites to vote for the way you could with eg one of the year end polls. mostly you just end up deepening your love for records you already adore (as has been the case with me + the weatherthans, juno, fireworks). but I could see throwing this a few points.

Since they seem to be getting some attention here,

can't believe you're just going to skip commenting on alive with the glory of love

Mordy, Monday, 20 February 2017 04:06 (seven years ago) link

it was right in the middle of that ridiculous sugar rush of opening tracks, I was still dizzy tbh

it feels like it's losing steam a bit in the back stretch but still pretty strong

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 04:08 (seven years ago) link

should I phear in defense of the genre

lol @ the last two songs

For me, every ILM poll is a way to discover a lot of great new music. Of course I have my favorites, and my top 5 likely won't include any new albums, but I have already found at least 5 new albums that I love. And the campaigning hasn't even started!

it's super patchy and at one point real smdh ("died a jew") but it had several of their best songs and it's just generally weird that this really ambitious emo double album exists

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 20 February 2017 17:15 (seven years ago) link

honestly I had to switch to something else midway through the first disc

lol

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 20 February 2017 17:27 (seven years ago) link

but I did take a moment to specially listen to "died a jew" and woooooow so he's one of those "needs someone at his side to tell him no sometimes but never had one" dudes huh

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 17:28 (seven years ago) link

otm

also you didn't like "the church channel" or "girlfriend"?

I don't know if you've ever run a marathon before, but the thing about it is that it's not just running two half marathons, it's running that second half marathon after you just did the first one

my point is I'll give this say anything album another crack when I haven't just listened to an hour of say anything xp
