Crying - Beyond the Fleeting Gales

wow! how did i miss this from just last year? it's great

Mordy, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:06 (seven years ago) link

Completely missed it as well, probably my favourite of the last few years now

this is the first sign that they're emo

At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:17 (seven years ago) link

(And this poll is already the best ILM poll in the history of ILM. The river overfloweth)

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:17 (seven years ago) link

I really love the Crying album but girlish indie-pop vocals + hard rock guitar shredding + chiptune synths isn't what "emo" calls to my mind either.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:20 (seven years ago) link

You're right Crying should definitely win this poll

devvvine, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:27 (seven years ago) link

Ha, I might even vote for them! I wasn't disputing their inclusion in Mordy's poll, just saying I can understand their reaction to the label.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:39 (seven years ago) link

i think i talked about crying being "emo" in the album poll thread but imo they're 1) not emo 2) happen to play with several bands that are emo 3) sometimes #2 makes you emo anyway

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:42 (seven years ago) link

emo is entirely a phenomenon of reception theory

Mordy, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:43 (seven years ago) link

xp otm If I'd heard them outside of the emo thread and outside of being on Run for cover I would not be calling them emo

devvvine, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:45 (seven years ago) link

I probably said this before but my first exposure to them was when someone played the early single version of "Patriot" in plug. I thought they were a 70s prog/AOR band at first.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:49 (seven years ago) link

I am going to try my hardest to listen to at least some of every nommed album/band that is new to me

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:50 (seven years ago) link

I'm def going to try to listen to all of the noisier or post-hardcore albums (what I think they're calling "screamo" these days).

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:52 (seven years ago) link

Fall Out Boy - all of the Fall Out Boy albums <3

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 02:48 (seven years ago) link

i'm gonna need you to specify them by name but i agree w/ the sentiment (at least infinity on high and onward)

Mordy, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 02:55 (seven years ago) link

fuck it let's do this

Aereogramme - A Story In White
Aereogramme - Sleep And Release

no apologies for arty british post-emo, no apologies at all

imago, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 03:04 (seven years ago) link

i saw Aereogramme live in San Francisco, had a blast.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 03:06 (seven years ago) link

i don't know if i'll vote since i mostly only like the emo-adjacent stuff but i'm looking forward to this

ufo, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 03:32 (seven years ago) link

You could probably make a solid case for There's Nothing Wrong With Love as emo tbh

Evan R, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 03:34 (seven years ago) link

emo in content if not in execution

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 03:46 (seven years ago) link

i haven't voted in an ilm non-year-end poll in a very long time (maybe ever?) but i am all in on this one

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 04:47 (seven years ago) link

You could probably make a solid case for There's Nothing Wrong With Love as emo tbh

that's tricky, there's a buncha bands/records of that era that I'd prefer to classify as "rainy midwestern indie" (see also 764-HERO and early Modest Mouse)

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 12:48 (seven years ago) link

I think I do have to quibble with classifying something as emo that no one would have called emo at the time.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 13:30 (seven years ago) link

(if we're talking about something that actually was released in 1994)

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 13:30 (seven years ago) link

I mean, that's also the Meadowlands issue.

a quick bit of searching reveals a "is the meadowlands emo" discussion here in 2004 & there seems to be the occasional discussion in reviews from that time

ufo, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 14:00 (seven years ago) link

BTW, I love this idea for a poll.

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 14:01 (seven years ago) link

Sorry, typo in that second Knapsack album. It should be:

Knapsack - This Conversation Is Ending Starting Right Now

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 14:01 (seven years ago) link

Juno - This Is the Way It Goes and Goes and Goes

I already nommed the Juno albums but I am stoked to campaign on their behalf

that record is incredible

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 14:17 (seven years ago) link

I like A Future Live in Past Tense just as much despite (because of?) being maybe the most overblown independent rock record of the 00s

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 14:18 (seven years ago) link

I'm willing to stan for that one. Except for the spoken word track that's a wonderful album.

I will go on about them lots later, for now I'll just say they married post-rock and post-hardcore more seamlessly than anyone. and also, three geetars.
