Pinegrove - Cardinal

josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 13 February 2017 22:20 (seven years ago) link

And if we're allowed compilations:

Cap'n Jazz - Analphabetapolothology

― ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, February 13, 2017 2:09 PM (one hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

would've been inclined to vote for burritos, inspiration point etc. as an album i.e. the first 12 tracks of analphabetapolothology but also it's not like there's a bad track on the compilation or that i'll be unhappily voting for it

what is this poll's tolerance for arty indie with emo leanings

I Am In Atlanta And Thug Is Young (imago), Monday, 13 February 2017 22:26 (seven years ago) link

Ha, my post-hardcore-obsessed teenage friend did cite Joy Division as one of the pioneering emo bands, alongside Rites of Spring.

Shotmaker - Discography

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 13 February 2017 22:31 (seven years ago) link

xxxxp my belief about polls: nominate according to how you understand the parameters, vote according to how you understand the parameters. if it's not a good fit ppl won't vote for it.

Hoover - Hoover

90s Ottawa represent. (Only made it to 5 Arlington twice before it closed, though.)

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 13 February 2017 22:49 (seven years ago) link

I got to Ottawa well after 5 Arlington. Only moved there in 1999 (and wasn't old enough to start going to shows until like 2000, 2001). The way people used to talk about Shotmaker in hushed tones though, wow. I listened to a few mp3s off of soulseek at the time but more or less forgot their name until now!!! currently listening to mouse ear, damn i like this even more thna I thought I would in 2017/at age 32!

what emo is like the Crying album btw

I Am In Atlanta And Thug Is Young (imago), Monday, 13 February 2017 22:58 (seven years ago) link

Oh, check out the Okara album if you don't know it. The Beatles to Shotmaker's Stones?? The best 90s band that no one heard, anyway.

xp Try Rush and Van Halen

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 13 February 2017 23:00 (seven years ago) link

Actually, you might like Okara too, imago!

Native Nod - Today Puberty, Tomorrow the World

(Seriously, I would also love to hear more stuff that sounds like Crying but I don't know that anyone is doing the precise thing they do.)

devvvine, Monday, 13 February 2017 23:40 (seven years ago) link

Heh, I almost feel like I'm trolling, given what the rest of the noms are like, but I don't think I am (at least it's not all I'm doing)!

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 13 February 2017 23:42 (seven years ago) link

i don't think so! it's a broad aesthetic i'm looking for.

this is the first sign that they're emo

At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:17 (seven years ago) link

(And this poll is already the best ILM poll in the history of ILM. The river overfloweth)

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:17 (seven years ago) link

I really love the Crying album but girlish indie-pop vocals + hard rock guitar shredding + chiptune synths isn't what "emo" calls to my mind either.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:20 (seven years ago) link

You're right Crying should definitely win this poll

devvvine, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:27 (seven years ago) link

Ha, I might even vote for them! I wasn't disputing their inclusion in Mordy's poll, just saying I can understand their reaction to the label.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:39 (seven years ago) link

i think i talked about crying being "emo" in the album poll thread but imo they're 1) not emo 2) happen to play with several bands that are emo 3) sometimes #2 makes you emo anyway

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:42 (seven years ago) link

emo is entirely a phenomenon of reception theory

Mordy, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:43 (seven years ago) link

xp otm If I'd heard them outside of the emo thread and outside of being on Run for cover I would not be calling them emo

devvvine, Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:45 (seven years ago) link

I probably said this before but my first exposure to them was when someone played the early single version of "Patriot" in plug. I thought they were a 70s prog/AOR band at first.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:49 (seven years ago) link

I am going to try my hardest to listen to at least some of every nommed album/band that is new to me

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 14 February 2017 00:50 (seven years ago) link

I think part of the difficulty of the idea of the emo poll is the nostalgia factor, which makes it difficult to pick up new favorites to vote for

For me, every ILM poll is a way to discover a lot of great new music. Of course I have my favorites, and my top 5 likely won't include any new albums, but I have already found at least 5 new albums that I love. And the campaigning hasn't even started!

ArchCarrier, Monday, 20 February 2017 10:10 (seven years ago) link

should I phear in defense of the genre

it's super patchy and at one point real smdh ("died a jew") but it had several of their best songs and it's just generally weird that this really ambitious emo double album exists

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 20 February 2017 17:15 (seven years ago) link

honestly I had to switch to something else midway through the first disc

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 17:25 (seven years ago) link

lol

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 20 February 2017 17:27 (seven years ago) link

but I did take a moment to specially listen to "died a jew" and woooooow so he's one of those "needs someone at his side to tell him no sometimes but never had one" dudes huh

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 17:28 (seven years ago) link

otm

also you didn't like "the church channel" or "girlfriend"?

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Monday, 20 February 2017 17:30 (seven years ago) link

I don't know if you've ever run a marathon before, but the thing about it is that it's not just running two half marathons, it's running that second half marathon after you just did the first one

my point is I'll give this say anything album another crack when I haven't just listened to an hour of say anything xp

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 17:33 (seven years ago) link

Mordy, you rule. What an undertaking!
