thermals have more in common with like the breeders than they do emo

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:27 (seven years ago) link

is this just an emo/poppunk thing or is screamo / hardcore gonna be involved too?

Spottie, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:30 (seven years ago) link

.... that's a tough call

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:31 (seven years ago) link

Fevers and Mirrors is maybe the most emo thing ever

I think Thermals almost count as pop-punk but I'm inclined to agree with brad

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:32 (seven years ago) link

imo it will be more fun if we include screamo

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:33 (seven years ago) link

screamo for sure going to be included

Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 21:34 (seven years ago) link

Fevers and Mirrors is maybe the most emo thing ever

in terms of the actual songwriting? eh

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:35 (seven years ago) link

hell yeah, at least the bits I remember ("The Calendar Hung Itself" stands out for this), though I could use a relisten

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:38 (seven years ago) link

"calendar" is the closest it gets imo

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:41 (seven years ago) link

anyway iirc i said upthread i wouldn't fight anyone over this so i'm not sure why i'm doing it now lol

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:41 (seven years ago) link

lol I don't know why I'm arguing about records I have 0% chance of voting for and haven't listened to in full in over a decade

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 10 February 2017 21:42 (seven years ago) link

Haha. not really sure where else to post this but there's just enough pop-punk in here to warrant sharing. I spent like 2 hours messing w this last night:

blood command fall enough into a venn diagram of like... actual pop metal, metalcore, post-hardcore, emo, etc. that i think i can post them here. their new song is wonderful https://soundcloud.com/tigerfysisiskformat/blood-command-cult-drugs

is that a radio rip or something? the compression makes it unlistenable for me

Not sure if it got discussed anywhere last year (still no search feature?) but I keep coming back to this Ian Sweet LP. Not many other bands that can pick me up and make my stomach churn in the same song

Also, can't remember if I posted about this last year, but here's a comp of current stuff from China/Japan/Indonesia/Singapore: https://qiiisnacksrecords.bandcamp.com/album/emotion-no

oh man All Dressed Up In Dreams is my favorite Merritt song from my favorite of his records and Elaiza Santos is the perfect person to cover it

Still catching up on everything but faves from this year have been Oliver Houston and Dryjacket. This track is particularly delightful:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h01AQ7_3C6g

It's also been a dream winter for emo gigs in the UK! So far I've caught The Hotelier, Tiny Moving Parts, The Wonder Years, PUP, Pinegrove, Crying... Martha this month. TMP were the happiest band I have ever seen in my life.

Am I missing a Spotify/YouTube playlist for this year's thread? If not, I'll happily throw one together.

Everybody reading this: don't forget to vote in the EMO POLL! You have until tomorrow to send in your ballot.

Dug that Acceptance track. Not familiar with them.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 13 March 2017 21:05 (seven years ago) link

brad I finally was able to finish that acceptance album today. really good front to back modern pop rock album thanks for the rec.

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Tuesday, 14 March 2017 03:14 (seven years ago) link

new sorority noise album out - it's kinda like a deja entendu knock-off but the second track lyrics about fucking god and listening to the gaslight anthem and i'm enjoying it. some lyrical clunkers but this is def the best thing they've ever done imo.

Mordy, Saturday, 18 March 2017 00:43 (seven years ago) link

lol when i wrote that i had no idea they just covered "Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis" as a single

Mordy, Saturday, 18 March 2017 01:28 (seven years ago) link

(i like the stuff on the album more than the cover)

Mordy, Saturday, 18 March 2017 01:48 (seven years ago) link

it's embarrassing to admit but i'm kinda smitten w/ this sorority noise album

the line "I'm not trying to say it's easy / But I'm trying to say it's fine" has been stuck in my head for days

Mordy, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 04:04 (seven years ago) link

It's fun. Nothing to embarrassed about. The Old Grey album that came out last year was pretty good too.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 14:45 (seven years ago) link

p4k gave it an 8. normally i don't care how p4k reviews an album but i just read all the those old anti-emo p4k reviews of classic albums of the genre a few weeks ago.

Mordy, Friday, 24 March 2017 19:27 (seven years ago) link

i doubt this is the right thread for them but maybe the only place on ilm i can admit i am really digging this Creeper - Eternity, In Your Arms album which is horror punk and so somewhat related to emo/pop-punk at least to me?
