what's sad is that the erratically shaking thing feels like a calming diversion from working on the doonald thing. it has been an ordeal. hoping to "go live" with it on monday though

Really feeling these. They make me want to look for something, information, clarity, an answer. But it's all noise, static: there's nothing there. #2017

that is nice!

you ever try making these in 3d? you can set up a stereo anaglyph in After Effects. imo the subtle meditative nature of this last one would work well in 3D.

you don't even need to use two separate cameras, you can just vary the displacement and still get that effect.

i haven't! i feel like i'm the last person in the world to make the transition to that stuff. i don't even have glasses or anything.

i used really crappy morphing software (morpheus photo morpher) to do that last one, as well as some from a few weeks ago. i'm starting to get the hang of it but still haven't been able to figure out how to do really basic things with key frames. i want to have it morph from Stage A to Stage B to Stage C and back to Stage A again, but so far, I can only get it to automatically morph from A to B and back to A again.

also i know it's a lame thing to celebrate but i just turned in my first ever application for a residency. i know i shouldn't get my hopes up but tbh they're always up for things like this and if i don't get it i will die. at the same time i know i will probably need to apply to another dozen before i get lucky. either way, it felt really to finish putting a portfolio together and i feel a million times more prepared for the next one.

thank you! this one would be cool because it's a chicago-based thing with good ties to local spaces.i know my background will probably work against me but i'm hoping someone will give me a shot. put me in coach

What kind of residency is it? Art related, or working for a website? In any case, praying you will get this cuz your work is amazing!

lbi - it's this awesome place out in the middle of nowhere on a bunch of property! 2-3 weeks to make art, and then exhibition opportunities at local galleries for the year afterward. it's aimed at emerging artists trying to make "experimental projects" so i'm hoping they'll give me a chance. anyway, i know i should take a lesson from you and others by not saying anything it until after i get accepted somewhere (if i ever do), but i couldn't help but mention it just because i've been working hard just to get myself in the position to apply for this kind of a thing for a long, long time.

forks that place looks awesome. i wish i knew how to make games! that reminds me, it's not exactly a "game" but i really like this peter burr desktop application:

KM, I think they do art exhibitions as well, not just gaming residencies.

Zach no way, no lessons to be learned from keeping this to yourself. It's a great opportunity and like you say, you've worked your butt off to get in this position in the first place. Not saying that's not deserving of a reward - because you deserve this position damnit - but you can be proud already. Fuck modesty!

(True story: I actually dreamt you had an exhibition in a big museum, a while ago. Your gifs were displayed and repeating in frames the museum used to use for Rothko's and Rembrandt's etc, but for your expo they had simply cut the canvases out of the frames to be replaced by your gifs. It looked fantastic! Both big and tiny frames: all the paintings were cut out and showed your gifs. I was with you before opening day, you were hanging the frames up straight and getting the gifs in proper, and I was writing an advance piece about it for some newspaper. You were extremely nice and gracious in your approach, telling staff how exactly you wanted your gifs to be presented, but encouraging them when they didn't do it they way you wanted it. I was writing my ass off with observations like these and wanted to ask you more more more about it all but got distracted by a woman, who'd rather drink tea in the sodden museum shop with me.)

i'm amazed at your dream recall! i always have vivid dreams but the details all wash away soon after I wake up. I never see people I know in them, though. that must be a comforting feeling. :)

zs what software are you using for the stairs/waterfall video mapping ?

gr8080, Friday, 10 March 2017 13:09 (seven years ago) link

I used MadMapper. There's a free demo which is almost full-functionality (it just adds a watermark to everything). The FAQ/support online is pretty poor, but luckily it's a pretty intuitive piece of software. for my purposes, it worked extremely well and was very very user-friendly, simple to use.

a lot of people sync it up to other pieces of software like Modul8 so that they can play around with projections in real-time ( i guess for the purposes of DJing and stuff?). i haven't used Modul8 but I think it's a kind of MIDI controller? i could be way off on that. anyway, i get the feeling that madmapper can do a bunch more than what i did with it, but i didn't have the extra software/hardware to take advantage of it at the time.

oh man, that would be so much fun. i have thought about it before but it's one of those things where you'd have to be a part of show or be asked to do it otherwise. columbia, mo has an awesome film festival (T/F) with a public art component. a few of my friends suggested i should apply for it next year, so i'm thinking that would be a good opportunity to try to do some sort of large outside projection.

it's really easy to do, technically! not to shill for madmapper but you could align a projection to a building like that in just a minute or two, and mask out the windows (or project something different on only the windows) in another 5 minutes or so. the fun part would be deciding how to morph the building.
