RIP time travel

Drugs A. Money, Saturday, 14 January 2017 02:05 (seven years ago) link

might start a rival thread to continue my entirely inexplicable beef (not a real beef) w/ dinsdale

seriously though, there does seem to be a divide between ambient weird and crazy weird. time travel usually favoured the former, I usually favour the latter. so there might be something in the alternative 'weird stuff NO AMBIENT NO BORING' thread. rolling attention deficit?

I'll still visit

so where is this other thread?

I made this thread precisely because my kind of stuff almost never seems weird enough for the time travel thread. I suspect overlap will kill one of the two threads (probably this one) but I'm all for beefs so there.

re: Abul Mogard, got a friend who's a big fan too but I never managed to really get into him. It's pleasant enough but on the boring side of the boring ambient imo.

This is boring improv from Matt Christensen (of Zelienople) & Eric Eleazer:

Basically this was meant as a more inclusive version of the time travel thread.

Dinsdale, Saturday, 14 January 2017 08:11 (seven years ago) link

Full disclosure: I linked the new Kevin Hufnagel on the post-Fahey thread the other thread because I couldn't find "time travel".

That Kevin Hufnagel album was pretty cool

It's last year, and I linked to it in the voting thread but Space Camp 1991 was a cool listen and probably fits in this thread...

https://indexical.bandcamp.com/album/organvm-perceptvs

deep learning analysis of pop song wave files, breaking them into individual instruments, creating artifact-riddled sheet music which is then played in real time by large ensembles and it sounds incredible -- at first it sounds as if it's filled with timing errors and wrong notes, but all the 'wrongness' is actually over-precise analysis of some of the original arrangements, and as you listen over time and the pieces somehow hold together and get tighter and tighter, you realize that they kind of aren't strictly errors, there's some kind of turbo-charged high level thinking going on

whole album is completely amazing, especially 'ring of fire', 'jungle boogie' and 'crazy', but I think they made a good choice leading with the madonna

the pull track is just a sped up version of thinking plague's "organism". speaking of which thinking plague has a new one set to drop tomorrow. their last few records were so cheery! i'm sure it will be an upbeat and uplifting experience.

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Thursday, 9 February 2017 12:57 (seven years ago) link

ugh seriously half this record is just chunks of _in this life_ sped up. i don't know what the other half is but i'm betting jaikel didn't have anything to do with creating it. jaikel better hope steve feigenbaum never finds out about his "album".

ultros ultros-ghali, Thursday, 9 February 2017 14:23 (seven years ago) link

ha wow! in the age of vaporwave I am getting used to barely altered varispeed appropriation and still somehow having it feel legitimately 'authored' but for whatever reason, this guy putting his name on this seems notable for moral slippage

just happy to be on a board with members that can trainspot Thinking Plague in a 90 minute window, maybe the alt reality where 'In This Life' is standard album that every prog rock fan venerates is real after all
