eh journalists are pretty central to my twitter experience. if you just care about your buddies and weird twitter i don't see why tumblr can't fulfill that need

k3vin k., Friday, 6 January 2017 21:09 (seven years ago) link

bc they're not on tumblr

ogmor, Friday, 6 January 2017 22:41 (seven years ago) link

tumblr was cool kind of sad to see it die, though there are still some good ones

marcos, Saturday, 7 January 2017 00:07 (seven years ago) link

Apart from the occasional fix of arty smut tumblr never served any purpose for me. Not been on tumblr for years. It doesn't exist anymore in my world and I have no idea what the hell, if anything, is going on there these days.

Twitter without journos though: where's the fun in that?

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 7 January 2017 00:11 (seven years ago) link

journos on twitter is actually how you get the arty smut fix these days

Clay, Saturday, 7 January 2017 00:24 (seven years ago) link

That is not entirely wrong :)

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 7 January 2017 00:27 (seven years ago) link

they did say a close relationship

I think it sucks that Twitter has turned out to be a real boon for, more than anyone else, a coterie swho already write for a living, already has a venue for its work, already has a following . Of ourse I can, and have, curated my feed to exclude all but a few, but the Big Thing on Twitter will always center around a journalistic figure and here new piece/latest beef etc. I like to imagine a Twitter where these already prominent figures (good as many may be) were not allowed to step in and take over.

rip van wanko, Saturday, 7 January 2017 09:50 (seven years ago) link

ack, sorry for errors, it's late

I really dislike this new thing (new to me, anyhow) of seeing tweets liked by people I follow on my timeline. Is there a way to turn it off?

heaven parker (anagram), Saturday, 7 January 2017 11:37 (seven years ago) link

Wow, not heard of that before, that would annoy the shit out of me. Idk I use tweetbot, I want Twitter to a linear flow. The Twitter desktop and app are so annoying ever since they introduced the 'while you were away' stuff. It breaks the flow. (This is not helpful for you anagram, soz)

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 7 January 2017 11:46 (seven years ago) link

i find not using twitter eliminates this minor annoyance associated with twitter

no one was on twitter yet in '08

ciderpress, Monday, 9 January 2017 02:07 (seven years ago) link

Josh Malina is trolling like a weird Twitter pro today, starting here: https://twitter.com/JoshMalina/status/818475776542547968

xp yeah my account says it joined sept 08, but going through my feed and clicking on everyone now, i can't even find people who joined earlier than me so i have no clue who i was following back then.

ciderpress, Monday, 9 January 2017 17:05 (seven years ago) link

i think maybe i originally signed up just to follow dril

ciderpress, Monday, 9 January 2017 17:08 (seven years ago) link

joined november 2006, it was mostly just screwing around. I remember using it like a weird opt-in/out group text at times (it could text you updates if you had that turned on for particular friends)

I remember turning on notifications on the weekend or when a handful of friends were at the same music festival and we'd post things like "heading out to the bar at 8" or "going to go to the north stage at 3pm" as kind of a general meet-up thing

just reading opinions and interacting didn't become a thing until after most people had modern phones

some friends had t-mobile sidekick phones, remember those? lol

that's weird. thirteen years of my life have been documented there?

marcos, Monday, 9 January 2017 17:21 (seven years ago) link

yeah same for me but i never really posted on facebook much ever

ilx is probably the internet place where the past decade of my life is most thoroughly documented

i feel like dril's "not as good" recent period people were complaining about in the last couple years was actually a harbinger of the horrible 2017 ideas he predicted, Nostradamus-style

i've noticed some prominent accounts i follow have started using Tweet Delete to delete all their tweets after 48 hours... super fn anoying

flopson, Friday, 3 February 2017 20:01 (seven years ago) link

i wld prob do that if i was some sort of professional person with a public profile, ive said some rude things on that site

lag∞n, Friday, 3 February 2017 20:03 (seven years ago) link

only makes sense if you only tweet about current events

ciderpress, Friday, 3 February 2017 20:11 (seven years ago) link

fwiw i usually delete my own tweets out of shame and embarrassment around 30 seconds after making them

did i miss something wrt 140 character limit? a few weeks ago i started seeing a ton of tweets that are truncated w/ an ellipses and when i click on them in my feed it goes to the tweet but it's still truncated, so i click again and it brings me to a safari window where i have to view the tweet again to see the full thing. it super f'ing annoying, why cant they just show me the full tweet within the app

i think they made it so that mentions at the start of your tweet and embedded content like image/video links don't count towards 140

ciderpress, Friday, 3 February 2017 20:26 (seven years ago) link

what if this is intentional and spicer is a dril fan
