"iPhone Classic"

I want a new Mac to get back into fucking around with Ableton and affiliated noisemakers. Do I actually need a shitload of horsepower for that? I assume not, but also don't want to get something that's almost immediately obsolete.

sounds like an imac to me

aaaaaaaauuuuuuuuu (melting robot) (WilliamC), Friday, 23 December 2016 20:34 (seven years ago) link

Blargh that means I have to wait

a Warren Beatty film about Earth (El Tomboto), Friday, 23 December 2016 20:41 (seven years ago) link

It could be that I'm just biased in favor of the imac -- my current setup is my favorite out of 24 years of Macs.

aaaaaaaauuuuuuuuu (melting robot) (WilliamC), Friday, 23 December 2016 20:55 (seven years ago) link

I loved my 24" 2008 iMac. The disk finally went last year and replaced it with a mini and a $50 monitor because it had long since been relegated to photo + music library duty and really nothing else. A new 21" might hit the spot.

How about a used last generation MacBook Pro? That's what I'm using and you should be able to get one pretty cheap now

the late great, Friday, 23 December 2016 21:58 (seven years ago) link

I had the same iMac, Tom. Video card corruption meant it wouldn't on stay longer than an hour, so I finally bit the bullet and bought a shiny 27' model earlier this year. No regrets!

Nhex, Friday, 23 December 2016 22:21 (seven years ago) link

most anything should be fine unless you go crazy with plug-ins.

dan selzer, Saturday, 24 December 2016 06:10 (seven years ago) link

Nhex do you use that for gaming as well?

a Warren Beatty film about Earth (El Tomboto), Sunday, 25 December 2016 14:34 (seven years ago) link

I've had a retina imac for past two+ years and yeah it's been my favorite desktop experience by far

I'd recommend the 27" over the 21" though

, Sunday, 25 December 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link

27" seems so colossal and ostentatious though

a Warren Beatty film about Earth (El Tomboto), Sunday, 25 December 2016 16:01 (seven years ago) link

Worth it.

Jeff, Sunday, 25 December 2016 16:01 (seven years ago) link

totally worth it

xp yes i do, though i did spring extra for for the better video card and installed Windows

Nhex, Sunday, 25 December 2016 17:23 (seven years ago) link

completely totally worth it
(I also have a 23" second display next to it and that's worth it too)

yeah if they offered a 24" option I'd take that. as it is i crank up the font settings on chrome / system. but better to get the 27" than to get the 21" and wonder what if it were bigger

, Sunday, 25 December 2016 22:48 (seven years ago) link

I sometimes wish I had a single retina 27" monitor at work instead of two nice smaller monitors

mh 😏, Sunday, 25 December 2016 23:32 (seven years ago) link

After having a 27" iMac I can't go back to a smaller desktop screen.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 26 December 2016 00:16 (seven years ago) link

why is that? I've never had a big CPU screen so don't really get the attraction, unless you use it to stream videos / gaming

all muh palettes

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 26 December 2016 14:55 (seven years ago) link

Multiple screens, more room w/ InDesign and Lightroom. I dunno, just can't get used to less screen size after having one. My Macbook Pro is fine, but it feels cramped doing pretty much anything and when I had a 21" iMac at work it felt closer to the MBP than the 27".

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 26 December 2016 15:01 (seven years ago) link

If doing photography or any color critical work you should pair the MacBook wait an NEC PA monitor. Or Eizo if you're made of money.

dan selzer, Monday, 26 December 2016 15:27 (seven years ago) link

if your photography is for the web, do your color correction on an iPhone

mh 😏, Monday, 26 December 2016 16:30 (seven years ago) link

I'm a programmer and at work I just use the display on a 13" MacBook Pro and mostly ignore the 30" Cinema Display off to the side because I can only look at/do one thing at a time and don't like moving my head.

I'm just a hobbyist but printing from the iMac to my Epson has always been pretty good w/ soft proofing, even w/o profiling the iMac screen (which I keep meaning to do since the profiler setups are rentable now)

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 26 December 2016 20:20 (seven years ago) link

You can buy the cheapest colormunki or even the xrite eye1 display for not too much money. For the printer if you want to beyond canned profiles, there are services that send you a file and instructions on how to print it, the you send it back to them and they supply you with the icc profile if that specific combo of paper and your printer.

dan selzer, Monday, 26 December 2016 21:24 (seven years ago) link

Though I'd go for colormunki display over smile.

dan selzer, Monday, 26 December 2016 21:26 (seven years ago) link

I have fond memories of working with a graphic designer-turned-web developer. His office was next to the plotter people used for posters, and at least once he walked by to notice some wrong-colored abomination, emailed whoever printed it, and did color correction for them.

one month passes...

What's the nicer bit of kit - the iPhone 6s or the SE? I have a 5c now and like the size but could contemplate going up although I'm short and have quite small hands.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Wednesday, 15 February 2017 22:25 (seven years ago) link

6 screen space is appreciable but you lose the small form factor of the 5.

calstars, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 22:30 (seven years ago) link

Just like their laptops.

I'm noticing a trend here.

calstars, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 22:31 (seven years ago) link

se's size is absolutely perfect imo

Clay, Wednesday, 15 February 2017 22:56 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I think I agree. The 5c is my favourite iPhone I've owned. And I e said before that I think it's the best looking iPhone they ever made, but its on its last legs.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Wednesday, 15 February 2017 23:20 (seven years ago) link

I've said, rather.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Wednesday, 15 February 2017 23:21 (seven years ago) link

Agree that 5s and SE look and feel best but once you go to larger screen it's hard to imagine going back. The pluses are a step too far for me but the 6 is good for my failing eyes.

Alba, Thursday, 16 February 2017 07:56 (seven years ago) link

ya this is the problem i'm running into now, my boyfriend has a 6S+ and it's definitely too big, but then going back to using my phone whenever I use his feels definitely too small

agree. as long as they continue to make a phone that size i will continue to buy it

5c is a nice looking phone imo

marcos, Thursday, 16 February 2017 15:16 (seven years ago) link

I was thisclose to getting some airpods other day but I talked myself off the ledge by remembering that the only reason I was allowing myself to think about it waas because a .02c rubber tip had come off my perfectly serviceable earbuds. I AM sick of untangling them though. and the amplified wire bumps and jiggles are awful.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 16 February 2017 15:17 (seven years ago) link

I got the Power Beats 3. They're great.

Jeff, Thursday, 16 February 2017 15:18 (seven years ago) link

ok I admit it I have both airpods and powerbeats 3
