odd non sequitur

where do you imagine people are when they are tweeting these storms

a Warren Beatty film about Earth (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:25 (seven years ago) link

ronans point was very good not weak and jeets intelligence didnt seem to really help him understand it much, prob the kind of intelligence thats better suited to musings than human interactions

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:27 (seven years ago) link

idk man i find the pile-on tiring. jeet may be a lot of things (humorless, lacking in self-awareness), but at the very least he's curious about the world around him and can think for himself. give me that over a white guy who uses "manthreading" unironically

k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:28 (seven years ago) link

the man threading article was written by a woman fwiw

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:30 (seven years ago) link

if it's a bunch of people doing this it's lame, but if it truly is a bunch of people then why the hell is he wasting time responding to individuals

mh 😏, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:30 (seven years ago) link

manthreading has to do with your eyebrows

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:30 (seven years ago) link

I think they go to the last remaining bookstore in their city to browse and maybe buy a book, and then they take out their phone and then an hour or two later another shopper says "excuse me" because they are standing in front of some good books, and the twitter person is like "shit" and moves, and then realizes they are late for a thing and they have had nothing to eat since 9am

a Warren Beatty film about Earth (El Tomboto), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:31 (seven years ago) link

imo twitter is an excellent platform for roasting ppl jeets doing fine he cn deal

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:33 (seven years ago) link

i think "manthreading" was funny and tongue in cheek, knowing that the people who are guilty of it would either get the simile or blow up because they're humorless

it's not like men talking over people, but it often has the same run-on nature and linking the two is funny, although that appeal is limited to people who read a zillion "mansplaining" articles

basically, gawker in-media-sphere humor

i read the article and it was bad

k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:35 (seven years ago) link

which all the main tweetstorm ppl aspire to in that hyper-tweeting in-crowd has an intersecting set of lingo

and it's all ppl who aspire to be heard so badly

mh 😏, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:35 (seven years ago) link

ya it was obvs provocation targeting the humorless and pompous and anyone with any sense wldve steered clear or jsut laughed it off

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:36 (seven years ago) link

the risible portmanteaus are so tired at this point

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:37 (seven years ago) link

i agree jeet heer is mockable, i don't even like him that much or whatever, i just think we can do better than that attempt

k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:38 (seven years ago) link

that article was just baiting MRAs. no one thinks only men use that feature of twitter.

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:38 (seven years ago) link

u know whats not funny and actually terrible about twitter tho is the woman who wrote it had a ton of in earnest very nasty shit directed at her over it

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:38 (seven years ago) link

yeah but that was the evil plan of the editors of gizmodo. they used her as live bait to draw clicks. isn't so funny.

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:39 (seven years ago) link

imo the best part was that a ton of tweets have been made out of this "manthreading" article, treating it as something as significance because it was a published article on a blog

if it was a series of tweets by the same writer, would anyone have noticed?

ergo maybe tweetstorms are minor compared to actual articles

mh 😏, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:39 (seven years ago) link

my friend is taking a comic books class in University and he has a big anthology of criticism of comic books and the introduction is written by Heer Jeet

it was your typical say-nothing red meat for the base, lagoon started a whole thread about this phenomenon iirc

k3vin k., Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:40 (seven years ago) link

i never heard of this jeet but i am picturing derek jeter

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:41 (seven years ago) link

thats one of the funniest things abt him

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:42 (seven years ago) link

if an article gets traction its def more powerful than a tweetstorm but if u have a large twitter following yr average tweetstorm will get more eyeballs than yr average article

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:42 (seven years ago) link

coincidentally derek jeter was lagoon's favorite baseball player for his favorite team the yankees

he does this kind of nerdy canadian writer thing in actual publications and his aspirational career thread (lol) was publishing... a book of his tweetstorms

i was at a bookstore with two people from his town and when i pointed it out had to explain who he was because they had no idea

also he did the corporate email thing with his twitter handle so people keep screwing up his first and last name and i feel for him

mh 😏, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:45 (seven years ago) link

tweetstorms are good imo. big ass rectangular blocks of prose an inappropriate way to express 99% of info u read online. so many times i read and articles and the preamble was like the first 8 paragraphs and the actual new info could be expressed in a handful lines. lists, threaded tweets, hell just straight bullet point form shit

flopson, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:45 (seven years ago) link

xp- ha i just did that

flopson, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:46 (seven years ago) link

yeah. it's like with food. it all gets broken down into sugar eventually anyway, so i just eat refined sugar all the time.

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:46 (seven years ago) link

if we want to get deep the subtext of the manthreading complaint is twitter used to be fun before it was populated with oblivious careerists

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:47 (seven years ago) link

whether or not thats true who knows its prob kinda true, also media ppl are basically required to be on there even if they find it hellish which is another angle

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:51 (seven years ago) link

crazy to think u have to be in this place for work where anonymous strangers direct sexist threats at u wattba

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:52 (seven years ago) link

btw he starts out saying he's a "twitter essayist" then says "blogs are much like essays" but claims often they lack a professional imprimatur
note he wrote this in response to two blogs on a media site, as a blog on a media site
https://newrepublic.com/article/139384/defense-twitter-essay

like the main idea is that he's facilitating a conversation in public with input and conversational sidetracks via retweets which is sometimes true! but the fact there is such a thing as a chain of tweets now (although the interface has changed since he started) basically shows the whole numbered thing is dumb -- all it does is show it's his conversation and these are the canonical signposts because other participants don't get numbers

mh 😏, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:54 (seven years ago) link

i luv 2 tweetstorm

( ^_^) (Lamp), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:55 (seven years ago) link

it wld be sick if heer jeet was like 'get ready 4 the jeetstorm' everytime he posted a bunch of connected tweets

( ^_^) (Lamp), Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:56 (seven years ago) link

now we're talking

mh 😏, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:58 (seven years ago) link

i asked him if i make a contribution to his tweet essay if i get a number

mh 😏, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:58 (seven years ago) link

controversial opinion: the numbers are good because sometimes the threading gets fucked up

flopson, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 01:59 (seven years ago) link

who is heet jeer

, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 02:00 (seven years ago) link

i just realized he has basically recreated the UK prime minister's "question time" where one man speakers and others interject questions and heckles

mh 😏, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 02:00 (seven years ago) link

the numbers function purely to indicate that its a tweetstorm, particularly in the context of a rt u think oh hey maybe ill read the whole thing, like they cld be replaced with a designated emoji and nothing wld change, some crazy semiotics 2 think abt

which makes the numbers i think the real sticking point, its an advertisement, its belies the pomposity and desperation beneath the casual a few thought on...

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 02:01 (seven years ago) link

tho the numbers do predate twitter threading so theyre also vestigial

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 02:03 (seven years ago) link

it's fine to have a few thoughts on a topic imo

Treeship, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 02:03 (seven years ago) link

ive got some thoughts

lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 December 2016 02:04 (seven years ago) link

THREAD

basically i think twitter just needs a way to point to a single tweet and then show everything that person tweeted after that chronologically and you can just jump off when you realize they're off the topic or boring
