I aim to please, Simon. You might also find it hilarious that there are "token" representatives of singer/songwriters (Ed Harcourt), Afrobeat Dub (Dele Sosimi Meets Prince Fatty & Nostalgia 77), kosmische (Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation, Camera), jazz (Greg Ward & 10 Tongues) and Toureg (Noura Mint Seymali) among others. Or you can click on the f**king genre lists link if it's too jarring for your brain to process multiple genres at once.

The Omar-S track at #7 in the Mixmag list is pretty much perfect.

Np. But I do want to point out that I do have a complete Hip Hop & Rap list after the jump. Also, my top album in that category is actually Steve Lehman – Sélébéyone. Every year I get at least one sneering comment about my choices in that particular group, as if I'm not allowed to list my favorites because I listen to other genres.
― Fastnbulbous, Monday, 12 December 2016 17:06 (seven years ago) link
The other thing was I just saw the list and not that it was yours/an individual's - most of the ones here have been from mags or groups, so I instantly (wrongly) assumed it was a quirk of consensus.

I take it this isn't a reissue of the Norwegian 80s girl group?
― Siegbran
or the demo tape by the '80s zeuhl group

that is a p cool psych/doom/garage list with ATCQ hilariously shoehorned in
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.)
c'mon it samples spinetta, it's not _that_ much of a stretch!
― increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Monday, 12 December 2016 17:13 (seven years ago) link
That is a common assumption, but there are more lists driven by a single person than you'd think. I've been doing this over a couple decades, and posting in these annual threads for many years, hopefully most don't mind. xp I bet a playlist of all the dozens of bands named Troll over the years would be pretty fun!

uber lame that they felt the need to stick Radiohead on there

i forgot that that kyle hall album came out this year, thought it came late last year. i loved it.
― I've read Ta-nehisi Coates. (marcos), Monday, 12 December 2016 20:02 (seven years ago) link
it in fact did come out last year
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Monday, 12 December 2016 20:04 (seven years ago) link
yeah the vinyl came out in December 2015. Might have got a digital release later though

ah ok!
― I've read Ta-nehisi Coates. (marcos), Monday, 12 December 2016 20:06 (seven years ago) link
no harm in highlighting a December release though. Considering they're usually consigned to oblivion
yeah i was gonna make that point too. publications pretty much don't exist for half of december anyway

Pusha T's album, which has been mostly forgotten, came out very mid December last year and it made my 2016 list.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 December 2016 20:08 (seven years ago) link
That RA list is weird this year. I expect a list more centered on techno/house and having artists like Radiohead and Jessy Lanza in there sort of breaks the 'specialized" feeling their year long reviews have.
― Moka, Monday, 12 December 2016 20:09 (seven years ago) link
can i put kyle hall on my 2016 ilx ballot then y/n
― I've read Ta-nehisi Coates. (marcos), Monday, 12 December 2016 20:09 (seven years ago) link
The aquariumdrunkard list is massive and has some amazing records in there which I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere.
― Moka, Monday, 12 December 2016 20:11 (seven years ago) link
That RA list is very dull.
― Matt DC, Monday, 12 December 2016 20:16 (seven years ago) link
plus Radiohead!
― Number None, Monday, 12 December 2016 20:17 (seven years ago) link
(definitely going to check out some stuff from that list)
I don't think anyone's posted the American Songwriter list yet:

i once made a mixtape of metal bands named legion. it was pretty rad.

it doesn't seem to differentiate new releases and archival releases? okay yeah yoko's _plastic ono band_ is a great record, but filing it next to frank ocean seems a bit strange.
― increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Monday, 12 December 2016 20:27 (seven years ago) link
Aquariumdrunkard lists are always like that. Lots of reissues and archival.
― Moka, Monday, 12 December 2016 20:46 (seven years ago) link
RA list just confirms that i'm really not missing anything by skipping out on that site

RA list is kinda depressing, it's weird too because I've found loads of great music on their site this year and was of the impression that they had started to come into their own a bit.
― MikoMcha, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 06:38 (seven years ago) link
Just read the Pitchfork and SPIN lists, and it's amazing how similar they are to each other. Not just the same #1, but every single album in P4k's top 20 is in SPIN's top 30, just shuffled around. But there's one major difference: SPIN put the 1975 at #5, and it's nowhere in the P4k top 50.

I refuse to believe so many people actually like the Life of Pablo or rate is anything more than an obvious bodge job.

I refuse to believe so many people actually like [art I dislike] = nagl
― niels, Tuesday, 13 December 2016 08:15 (seven years ago) link
I can understand liking it or finding its flaws sort of interesting but when Kanye's worst album by far is appearing as the top rap album of 2016 in multiple lists it suggests there's something else happening here.
