Caramanica shaded Solange in an NYT podcast and Solange tweeted at length about how hurt and offended she was by his comments. "Don't You Wait" is inspired in part by the comment he made iirc

I haven't heard the Solange album and likely never will, but Caramanica is an idiot with shitty taste.

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Monday, 12 December 2016 06:00 (seven years ago) link

Well, she has basically said that the whole album is her response to that shade, so not responding does seem kind of petty. That being said, I do like Caramanica, and not saying anything > panning it, I guess. Animosity from an artist has been known to influence how you perceived that artist's work. But to the extent that he influenced one of the AOTYs, I guess he should be... proud?

The Omar-S track at #7 in the Mixmag list is pretty much perfect.

The Four Tet remixed Shura track is 'Touch' btw. Prefer the Tourist remix of her 'What's It Gonna Be?' to that though.

nashwan, Monday, 12 December 2016 15:54 (seven years ago) link

The Mixmag list is the best list out of any of these.

I aim to please, Simon. You might also find it hilarious that there are "token" representatives of singer/songwriters (Ed Harcourt), Afrobeat Dub (Dele Sosimi Meets Prince Fatty & Nostalgia 77), kosmische (Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation, Camera), jazz (Greg Ward & 10 Tongues) and Toureg (Noura Mint Seymali) among others. Or you can click on the f**king genre lists link if it's too jarring for your brain to process multiple genres at once.

Np. But I do want to point out that I do have a complete Hip Hop & Rap list after the jump. Also, my top album in that category is actually Steve Lehman – Sélébéyone. Every year I get at least one sneering comment about my choices in that particular group, as if I'm not allowed to list my favorites because I listen to other genres.

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 12 December 2016 17:06 (seven years ago) link

The other thing was I just saw the list and not that it was yours/an individual's - most of the ones here have been from mags or groups, so I instantly (wrongly) assumed it was a quirk of consensus.

That is a common assumption, but there are more lists driven by a single person than you'd think. I've been doing this over a couple decades, and posting in these annual threads for many years, hopefully most don't mind.

xp I bet a playlist of all the dozens of bands named Troll over the years would be pretty fun!

yeah i was gonna make that point too. publications pretty much don't exist for half of december anyway

Pusha T's album, which has been mostly forgotten, came out very mid December last year and it made my 2016 list.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 December 2016 20:08 (seven years ago) link

That RA list is weird this year. I expect a list more centered on techno/house and having artists like Radiohead and Jessy Lanza in there sort of breaks the 'specialized" feeling their year long reviews have.
