What has been in the Guardian list this year?
― Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:07 (seven years ago) link
You guys do realise that the issue with GAPDY wasn't just its predictability but its overwhelming white limp-dickness? Right?
― Matt DC, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:08 (seven years ago) link
(Full disclosure I loved that YYYs album which was the only one with some actual energy to it)
― Matt DC, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:09 (seven years ago) link
Can't get enough of that anti-white rhetoric these days.
― _Rudipherous_, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:11 (seven years ago) link
Worse than just being bad music, they're white too!
― _Rudipherous_, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:12 (seven years ago) link
what are you white or something

also the collective decision that beyonce is the only black female solo artist allowed at the top of these lists when DAWN (among others) is perhaps at least her equal is an unfortunate one
― Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:16 (seven years ago) link
it needs interrogation, at least
I don't like all this year's consensus picks but if you don't understand how it's different to and more interesting than 2009's wall-to-wall tepid North American indie-synth picks then I've got nothing for you.

Solange tied with Beyonce on the Ringer list
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:18 (seven years ago) link
anyone outside the Knowles family
― Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:19 (seven years ago) link
Solange was Number One at NPR, Rihanna was Number One at Fuse, Louis is an idiot
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:20 (seven years ago) link
I really wish there was a Kelly Rowland album that was popping up all over the place that I could namecheck here
― ¶ (DJP), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:21 (seven years ago) link
Grrr
I just mean 'where's Dawn'
― Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:21 (seven years ago) link
Yes, why aren't people rating this indie label album that came out 20 days ago over the woman who played the Super Bowl halftime show and the dying statement from one of rock's most iconic musicians
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:24 (seven years ago) link
what could use some more ~interrogation is the collective decision that beyoncé only became an Important Musician and EOY shoo-in in 2013 and why it took her FOURTEEN years to get to that stage
― lex pretend, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:26 (seven years ago) link
rip thom yorke
people might not be rating it but the critics have a duty to represent the best music, right
― Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:27 (seven years ago) link
Dawn's album doesn't even have a wikipedia page yet, but everyone should definitely be making the case that it's better than the album from someone who was nominated for Time's person of the year, conquered the VMAs and the Super Bowl and is currently sweeping the Grammys.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:28 (seven years ago) link
Beyoncé has been selling records and touring like an important musician since I can remember.

none of these things are what make beyoncé's album good or remotely relevant to lemonade's quality

well she has been an important musician all this time, i'm talking solely about critics
― lex pretend, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:31 (seven years ago) link
the super bowl, you say
― banfred bann (wins), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:31 (seven years ago) link
dunno what the super bowl is but i remember beyoncé graciously permitting a football (? baseball? basketball?) match to be appended to one of her concerts this year
― lex pretend, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:32 (seven years ago) link
I don't even mean Dawn's album is better. I'm just not seeing it in many lists alongside Beyonce etc. Anyway, I just think I hate watching any sort of musical consensus form, this is a losing fight
― Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:32 (seven years ago) link
is Whiney talking about Coldplay rn?

consensus is exclusion
also lol lex

Beyonce's last album would have been way up there had it not been released in December with no publicity. 4 did pretty well IIRC. Of the others only Birthday is even vaguely meriting of a high position in any of these lists and even then it was probably outdone by a lot of shonkier records.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:35 (seven years ago) link
Can we ban Louis from this thread
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:35 (seven years ago) link
the super bowl is a controversial but popular american event where spectators enter a stadium and queue up to take a bit of cannabis housed in an american football field-size bowl
they sit down and people-watch as entertainers perform all types of art forms. there's a cloud of mystery as to whether the entertainers themselves are stoned
just fyi

"I just think I hate watching any sort of musical consensus form, this is a losing fight"
Pretty sure you would be wetting your pants if a critical consensus was forming around Jute Gyte and the Cardiacs. Or you'd be complaining it was forming around the wrong records.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:38 (seven years ago) link
I'd be uneasy tbh

I hate to tell you this but every year since sometime in the 60s has had a consensus for rock & pop albums.
I expect it goes back further for jazz

One of the ilxors most obsessed with data and lists is just diarreahing all over this thread over and over again to say he hates the actual outcome of data and lists
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:40 (seven years ago) link
heh, was thinking the same thing.

can't wait for louis to see the first set of country albums to appear on the ILE year-end thread.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:42 (seven years ago) link
I just want everything good represented. I want wildly differing lists with maybe a few albums cropping up multiple times, or more precisely multiple albums cropping up a few times. That isn't too much to ask for.
I like my own data and lists for personal tab-keeping reasons. I like looking at individuals' lists. That's a completely different thing to tabulating every list into one big consensus-ball. Data and lists are not just one thing. They're a world of grey areas.
ILE can have the country albums sure lol

Voting will start on the metal thread today or tomorrow, so in a weeks time we can see if Jute Gyte wins it
― Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:44 (seven years ago) link
i like most of the music lex has been boosting lately. why u break heart :(
― Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:46 (seven years ago) link
lj you wont get wildly differing lists. go look at rocklist.net or rym and you will see most of the same albums in a different order.
If you wilfully try to do a different list then you may not be accurately representing your taste.
The reason the ilm polls work is because I think people genuinely love King, Jute Gyte, Dawn or Annie not because they feel they shouldnt vote for music they like but is on other lists.
― Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link
nme and melody maker lists from the 70s right up until the end all had a huge amount of the same albums just in a different order. spin.rs, etc probably the same.
― Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:48 (seven years ago) link
