You guys do realise that the issue with GAPDY wasn't just its predictability but its overwhelming white limp-dickness? Right?

(Full disclosure I loved that YYYs album which was the only one with some actual energy to it)

also the collective decision that beyonce is the only black female solo artist allowed at the top of these lists when DAWN (among others) is perhaps at least her equal is an unfortunate one

I don't like all this year's consensus picks but if you don't understand how it's different to and more interesting than 2009's wall-to-wall tepid North American indie-synth picks then I've got nothing for you.

Yes, why aren't people rating this indie label album that came out 20 days ago over the woman who played the Super Bowl halftime show and the dying statement from one of rock's most iconic musicians

what could use some more ~interrogation is the collective decision that beyoncé only became an Important Musician and EOY shoo-in in 2013 and why it took her FOURTEEN years to get to that stage

people might not be rating it but the critics have a duty to represent the best music, right

Dawn's album doesn't even have a wikipedia page yet, but everyone should definitely be making the case that it's better than the album from someone who was nominated for Time's person of the year, conquered the VMAs and the Super Bowl and is currently sweeping the Grammys.

Beyonce's last album would have been way up there had it not been released in December with no publicity. 4 did pretty well IIRC. Of the others only Birthday is even vaguely meriting of a high position in any of these lists and even then it was probably outdone by a lot of shonkier records.

the super bowl is a controversial but popular american event where spectators enter a stadium and queue up to take a bit of cannabis housed in an american football field-size bowl

they sit down and people-watch as entertainers perform all types of art forms. there's a cloud of mystery as to whether the entertainers themselves are stoned

I hate to tell you this but every year since sometime in the 60s has had a consensus for rock & pop albums.

I expect it goes back further for jazz

I just want everything good represented. I want wildly differing lists with maybe a few albums cropping up multiple times, or more precisely multiple albums cropping up a few times. That isn't too much to ask for.

I like my own data and lists for personal tab-keeping reasons. I like looking at individuals' lists. That's a completely different thing to tabulating every list into one big consensus-ball. Data and lists are not just one thing. They're a world of grey areas.

lj you wont get wildly differing lists. go look at rocklist.net or rym and you will see most of the same albums in a different order.

If you wilfully try to do a different list then you may not be accurately representing your taste.

The reason the ilm polls work is because I think people genuinely love King, Jute Gyte, Dawn or Annie not because they feel they shouldnt vote for music they like but is on other lists.

nme and melody maker lists from the 70s right up until the end all had a huge amount of the same albums just in a different order. spin.rs, etc probably the same.
