every time i see the name "nicholas jaar" i think of the ILM thread "i was a teenage villalobos" and it makes me not want to listen to him

early nico j singles were the shit. his career since has been a big disappointment

sirens in particular is just kind of a shitty fake post-punk/swans record

i didn't really get into the vynehall record as a whole but i love "blush"

I haven't heard the jaar record but all of this makes me suspect I will like it

you might! i get why people like it but is extremely not for me

not all clubs are terrible like that. i don't wish to deny anyone's experience or the problems in club culture but it can be a beautiful thing worth preserving (and under serious threat!) and it deserves far better representation than that list

the jaar backlash has been real, idg what's so hateable about his latest stuff but otoh it's def not as magical as his early stuff so i'm not invested in riding for it

I dunno, dance music, more than rock music, has a specific FUNCTION and I don't think it's totally out of line to suggest that having an understanding of it means engaging with it in the actual place that it's intended.

fwiw i get that clubs can be deeply unsafe spaces and i don't frequent them myself but surely they're just as valid a music delivery system as earbuds, surround sound, youtube thru laptop speakers, live performance etc

still don't think an albums list by design is going to reflect the club as much as a list of dj mixes and singles maybe

exactly and this is why a number of people have noted that maybe lex should have acknowledged that this was a list of electronic music not necessarily dance music whatever else one might want to say about the list's merits

the discussion about experiencing music thru clubs as it pertains to year end listing is a thorny one because if the implication is that you will go out to clubs, experience music, then curate it into a list then... that takes a lot of effort! like, the way i see people experience new music in clubs can be like, you have to take out your phone and record the song as a voice memo so you don't forget what it sounds like. maybe your friend knows it or you know the DJ and can ask to find out what it is, but you might just have to hope to hear it a few more times so that you kind of just find out what it is... some other way, like if it's a track that sort of floats up to the top on beatport or something. but otherwise it's a very ephemeral experience. you really have to hunt shit down, there's no lyrics to google or hooks to shazam. so anyway i don't begrudge any non-professional dance music writers for not doing all that.

that said it can be a very rewarding experience :-)

Or you live in, say, Hoboken so your local clubs only represent douchebags and terrible music
