also, I don't *know* this but the genre lists would seem to be the natural result of the recent redesign/etc separating reviews and the like by genre, no?

also the koze comp has like, three of my favorite songs of the year on it

i love moodymann but even he doesn't scream youthful energy of the dancefloor, omar-s is always great but the new one i sp much more of the same, jubilee can be a fun dj but the album is boring watered-down dancehall, and those are indeed the best of a boring list made by people who don't seem to be invested in actually dancing in clubs in 2016

(never heard of kornel kovacs)

xps

ie it's the cumulative impact of all those albums as The Best Of Dance rather than whether a couple of them are in fact good or not

whatever the reason, i am glad that pitchfork is taking the lead in having genre lists

flopson, Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:05 (seven years ago) link

I fucking hate clubs, always have and always will. does this make my opinion invalid? because this is what you're implying.

i figure that's why it's called "best electronic music"

xp

Rojus is amazing, one of the best sounding records i've heard in a very tactile way

flopson, Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:14 (seven years ago) link

"that place you hate? the one that exists in thousands of permutations yet is always basically the same? where there's literally no room to maneuver whatsoever and as a result people keep shoving you and spilling their $20 vodka and simple syrups on you? where drunken frat bros flailingly attempt to grope you or, more likely, jeer about how fat you are as you walk by [this has happened pretty much every time I've wound up in a club]? where you can't hear anything at all over the torrential, inescapable roar of crowd noise and your resulting headache, let alone what music is playing?

sorry, but your general human preference to do things you like and not things you dislike means you don't *really* like all that electronic music you love. stick to guitars, you old."

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:15 (seven years ago) link

mmm, pretty sure this is the first genre list I've seen on a major online music publication

flopson, Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:15 (seven years ago) link

i'd get it if this were "the top dance records of 2016" and they put that horrible nicolas jaar record on there anyway

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:20 (seven years ago) link

every time i see the name "nicholas jaar" i think of the ILM thread "i was a teenage villalobos" and it makes me not want to listen to him

I've read Ta-nehisi Coates. (marcos), Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:26 (seven years ago) link

early nico j singles were the shit. his career since has been a big disappointment

sirens in particular is just kind of a shitty fake post-punk/swans record

i didn't really get into the vynehall record as a whole but i love "blush"

I haven't heard the jaar record but all of this makes me suspect I will like it

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:39 (seven years ago) link

you might! i get why people like it but is extremely not for me

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:42 (seven years ago) link

not all clubs are terrible like that. i don't wish to deny anyone's experience or the problems in club culture but it can be a beautiful thing worth preserving (and under serious threat!) and it deserves far better representation than that list

the jaar backlash has been real, idg what's so hateable about his latest stuff but otoh it's def not as magical as his early stuff so i'm not invested in riding for it

lex pretend, Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:48 (seven years ago) link

i mean it's just the kind of delicate overcrafted slightly pompous but unmemorable electronic album i hear 48387343 iterations of every year

lex pretend, Thursday, 8 December 2016 17:49 (seven years ago) link

I'm really liking the Kornél Kovács LP!

Evan, Thursday, 8 December 2016 18:01 (seven years ago) link

xp- exactly, the early singles were delicate overcrafted slightly pompus yet extremely memorable and often had great beats u could dance to

flopson, Thursday, 8 December 2016 18:03 (seven years ago) link

xp -- sure, which is fine, until it becomes "and if you don't like this, your opinion on electronic music, even electronic music recorded for other purposes, is invalid." I don't mandate that people go to a TRL filming to enjoy pop music.

the idea that "[not seeming] to be invested in actually dancing in clubs in 2016" is an indication of anything besides one's hobbies

a self-reinforcing downward spiral of male-centric indie (katherine), Thursday, 8 December 2016 18:18 (seven years ago) link

I believe this all could have been temporarily avoided if lex initially realized it was more broadly titled "best electronic" not "best dance".

Evan, Thursday, 8 December 2016 18:25 (seven years ago) link

I dunno, dance music, more than rock music, has a specific FUNCTION and I don't think it's totally out of line to suggest that having an understanding of it means engaging with it in the actual place that it's intended.

don't go to the clubs where people yell at you though. that's rule number one.

scott seward, Thursday, 8 December 2016 18:39 (seven years ago) link

fwiw i get that clubs can be deeply unsafe spaces and i don't frequent them myself but surely they're just as valid a music delivery system as earbuds, surround sound, youtube thru laptop speakers, live performance etc

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 18:39 (seven years ago) link

still don't think an albums list by design is going to reflect the club as much as a list of dj mixes and singles maybe
