just had a tipoff that all frank ocean placings and reviews were really for lil peep but advertisers changed them at the last second for woke clickbae

lol @ 'clickbae'

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 7 December 2016 15:29 (seven years ago) link

it's seriously baffling. when it makes the 77 nobody will know how

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Wednesday, 7 December 2016 15:44 (seven years ago) link

I know no one will agree with me but 77 is just too damn short for these lists now

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Wednesday, 7 December 2016 15:48 (seven years ago) link

the idolator list is pretty typical/predictable of nu-idolator, the mainstream pop records plus a few albums that mostly the pop blogosphere stans over

I've been relistening to the Maxwell album too. I got stuck on "All the Ways That Love Can Feel" for a couple listening cycles on Sunday.

How is the Maxwell futuristic? I like that description but not sure I could defend it.

101 LÅPSLEY | Operator (DJ Koze’s disco edit)

This is about 95 places too low.

yeah i love that song/remix

i thought so too for a while but lately i've been coming back to it a lot in the way i feel magnetized to the first. (though i still sorta don't know why the stuart matthewman tracks are there and they sorta give me a nightmare vision of a bloozy sade record)

― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, December 7, 2016 1:48 PM (eight hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

yeah the matthewman trax are entirely it, i resent them v deeply. guess that they manage to effectively down the whole thing on their own is testament to the crystalline changeling construction of the rest, refinement to an near-imperceptible nanotech degree

lol, i had no idea which these were and...they are two of the strongest tracks for me

i spend the first half of the album enjoying it but as background music but the second half completely reels me in and i'm usually spellbound by the end. still not determined the exact point in the album the shift occurs for me

Goddamit Idolator you had a chance to mention KING as not really an album but a comp + new songs and you fucked it up

That list has a split personality. 50-21 has some pretty fun stuff, then the top 20 is the S.O.L.

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 8 December 2016 00:01 (seven years ago) link

What was I thinking? I meant S as in same ol' sh*t.

KING have never represented their album to be a compilation + new songs (and couldn't many, many debut albums be so described?) as far as I know?

Finally, someone gives The Drones a nod. D.D Dumbo is interesting, been listening to it this past week. He kind of sounds like Sting more than Sting does. Or Eliot Sumner.

http://www.ew.com/article/2016/12/08/ew-best-albums-2016

Not much crossover with my tastes, but it's actually more ILM aligned than a lot of lists.

You can see all the list in a more uniform format at http://www.albumoftheyear.org/lists.php (see recently added lists column on right)

Fastnbulbous, Thursday, 8 December 2016 15:18 (seven years ago) link

the Drones made my top 50. not their best album but a very worthy sharp left turn.

Beyoncé - Lemonade #1

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 8 December 2016 15:25 (seven years ago) link

Possibly the most boring list yet, plus Britney.

dorsalstop, Thursday, 8 December 2016 18:52 (seven years ago) link

fucksake GAPDY really is happening again

http://www.splicetoday.com/music/splice-today-s-top-10-records-of-2016

#4. Matmos — Ultimate Care II
#5. A Tribe Called Quest — We Got It from Here... Thank You 4 Your Service
#6. Young Thug — JEFFERY
#7. Rosali — Out of Love
#8. Animal Collective — Painting With
#9. Deakin — Sleep Cycle
#10. Deerhoof — The Magic

flappy bird, Thursday, 8 December 2016 18:56 (seven years ago) link

GAPDYXX it was. the xx were at the top of all those lists

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 8 December 2016 18:57 (seven years ago) link

a GADPY with A Tribe Called Quest and Beyoncé is a good GADPY imo

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 8 December 2016 18:59 (seven years ago) link

got no problem with those two records. ATCQ is in my own personal top 5. but it's not close to being at the top end of all these lists. tbh it's the crushing inevitability of frank ocean and radiohead that is killing me

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:03 (seven years ago) link

Been following the Guardian countdown which was so far so predictable but I am genuinely astonished that enough of them liked that mess of a Rihanna album to vote it in at #7. Especially as Life of Paolo is probably still to come.

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:03 (seven years ago) link

Paolo Di Kanye

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:07 (seven years ago) link

What has been in the Guardian list this year?

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:07 (seven years ago) link

You guys do realise that the issue with GAPDY wasn't just its predictability but its overwhelming white limp-dickness? Right?

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:08 (seven years ago) link

(Full disclosure I loved that YYYs album which was the only one with some actual energy to it)

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:09 (seven years ago) link

Can't get enough of that anti-white rhetoric these days.

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:11 (seven years ago) link

Worse than just being bad music, they're white too!

_Rudipherous_, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:12 (seven years ago) link

also the collective decision that beyonce is the only black female solo artist allowed at the top of these lists when DAWN (among others) is perhaps at least her equal is an unfortunate one

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:16 (seven years ago) link

it needs interrogation, at least

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:16 (seven years ago) link

I don't like all this year's consensus picks but if you don't understand how it's different to and more interesting than 2009's wall-to-wall tepid North American indie-synth picks then I've got nothing for you.

Matt DC, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:18 (seven years ago) link

Solange tied with Beyonce on the Ringer list

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:18 (seven years ago) link

anyone outside the Knowles family

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:19 (seven years ago) link

Solange was Number One at NPR, Rihanna was Number One at Fuse, Louis is an idiot

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:20 (seven years ago) link

anyone outside the Knowles family

I really wish there was a Kelly Rowland album that was popping up all over the place that I could namecheck here

¶ (DJP), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:21 (seven years ago) link

Grrr

I just mean 'where's Dawn'

Dave Plaintive rapper with classical training (imago), Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:21 (seven years ago) link

Yes, why aren't people rating this indie label album that came out 20 days ago over the woman who played the Super Bowl halftime show and the dying statement from one of rock's most iconic musicians

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:24 (seven years ago) link

what could use some more ~interrogation is the collective decision that beyoncé only became an Important Musician and EOY shoo-in in 2013 and why it took her FOURTEEN years to get to that stage

lex pretend, Thursday, 8 December 2016 19:26 (seven years ago) link

rip thom yorke

people might not be rating it but the critics have a duty to represent the best music, right
